There are two kinds of people in the world: those who grieve over a breakup like normal people by burning a few photographs and shedding a few tears, and those who, well, go a little crazy. This story is about the second type of person.

In late November, a pit bull mix was found abandoned in Maryland and picked up by the Caroline County Humane Society. Though the dog didn’t have a collar, he did have a microchip, and so the volunteers were able to discover that the pup came from Wichita, Kansas. What they didn’t know was how he ended up all the way in Maryland, but that was about to change. After getting in contact with the dog’s owner, the whole dramatic story unfolded.

Apparently, the dog, whose name is Zimba, went on a road trip with his mom’s boyfriend. While they were away, Zimba’s mom broke up with the boyfriend, and to get revenge, the boyfriend just left the dog in Maryland. He stopped answering his phone from his ex-girlfriend and subsequently put her through unnecessary pain and suffering. Since the boyfriend never returned with Zimba, she has been searching for him, so when the humane society called with the good news that they’d found him and that he was safe, she was ecstatic. However, with a job and kids to think about, she had no idea how she was going to get all the way to Maryland to pick him up. A kind stranger decided to step in to help.

Zach Holt heard about Zimba’s story and volunteered to make the more than 1,000-mile journey to return Zimba to his home. Zach used to work at the shelter and his girlfriend still does, so when she told him about the insane actions of the boyfriend, he decided to help out.

“I’m a bartender,” he told reporters. “I strictly work, you know, the weekends and Monday and I have Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday off. And four days is plenty of time to get to Kansas and back, so I said, ‘Why not?’”

Zach is impressed with everyone that made Zimba’s return possible and claims that the road trip is the easy part of it all.

“All the hard work, you know, of coordinating everything and having him found, you know, the person that took time out of their day to actually, you know, wrangle Zimba and make sure that they got in contact with somebody. I mean that was awesome… it was just as easy for them to just ride on by and be like ‘Oh look, there’s a stray dog.’” He also credits the shelter for finding out where Zimba was from and for getting in touch with his owner.

The shelter says that Zach doesn’t give himself enough credit and was in the middle of trying to raise money for his gas and toll fees while he was on the road. As of Tuesday, December 5th, Zach was just excited to see Zimba reunited with his owner.

“I can’t imagine my right-hand man being gone that long,” he says. (Zach has his own dog, a German shepherd/Shar Pei mix named Forrest, and a cat, Sullivan.) “It’s going to be great, I mean, it’s going to be lovely… especially it being so close to Christmas and stuff like that.”
