I absolutely loved Bill Nye when I was a kid!
He has had an absolute revival with the internet memes about him booming and people reliving their childhood memories.

If youโre not familiar with Mr. Bill Nye the Science Guy, he was an educational sensation back in the โ90s! He made episodes all about scientific phenomena and helped explain them in a way that was easily understood by kids, and usually demonstrated these phenomena in fun experiments.
He was pretty funny back then and heโs just as funny now!
His one hundred episode show was shown often in schools from the โ90s and into the early 2000s! I wouldnโt be surprised if they were still shown today! (although it might be trickier to find a VHS player!)
Most recently, Mr. Nye was on Tik Tok displaying exactly how useful a few kinds of masks are!
Everything ranging from a simple scarf to an N-95 mask!

The experiment itself is a fairly simple one. The Scientist Supreme would wear each mask and blow on a candle to observe how much the candle flickered.
This would show a rough idea of how much air was passing through the mask.

The scarf didnโt do so well in these tests.
The candle went out with but a quick, single, small breath! Nye rated it as ineffective.

He then used a two-layer cloth mask that was fitted across the nose.
The cloth mask had much better results!
Mr. Science Guy had to blow with a good bit of strength and multiple times and even then the candle was never extinguished!

Finally, Bill tested it with an N-95 mask.
The candle didnโt so much as flicker.
However, N-95 masks are really intended for the medical professionals fighting every day through this pandemic. While they are the most effective, a cloth mask will do you just fine, especially if you maintain your social distancing practices.

Mr. Nye does indeed say that you should wear a mask to protect yourself. Butโฆ
He admits (quite passionately and hilariously) that the real reason he wants you to wear a mask?
Is to protect him! He doesnโt want your gross particles entering his lungs!
Bill stands by this being literally literally a matter of life and death. And for people who are older or with pre-existing health conditions, it is!
Leave it to Bill Nye to deliver serious, heavy lessons in a digestible fashion.

Nye has always had a way of being fun and relateable and knowing how to get through to people of all ages.
In this way, heโs one of the best teachers alive.
And he has also always been weirdly kind of cool? I guess? In a way? Even if he embraced the nerd role with a lab coat and bow-tie, he has
a natural charisma that made you want to sit down with him.

(On a side note, according to Nye himself, he actually started the show wearing a straight tie which eventually evolved into the bow-tie that we all know and love!)
He has maintained his reputation of being funny and cool by growing with his audience.
He was absolutely marketed to kids when he first had his show, but
people who grew up watching him are into their 30s and 40s now!
