It was a huge spectacle to be seen in Sydney, Nova Scotia where hundreds of people from the popular Canadian biker group supported a ten-year-old boy who had been bullied at school.
Xander Rose, a fourth-grade student, unfortunately, had to deal with excessive bullying at Harbourside Elementary school.
That’s why the large group of bikers decided they would escort Xander to his school, right at the front door, to send a message of support and to discourage any form of bullying.
The bikers, all dressed up in leather, were contacted and rallied by the group known as Defenders Of The Children, which is mainly active in the United States. Biker Mike Rasso organized the whole thing after Xander’s mother posted a plea in the Defenders Of The Children Facebook group.
“Young Xander Rose from Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. 10 years old, grade 4, 5’2″, 150lbs was the subject of some serious school bullying. His Mum contacted us and we put out the call. Nova Scotia Bikers rose to that call. Escorting Xander from home right to the front door of school.”
“I don’t know if the smile is off his face yet,” Mike recalls. “He was ecstatic. For the first time in a long while Xander wanted to go to school.”
Mike was able to get in touch with more than 150 bikers who were more than willing to help Xander out. That included bikers from a local Bay Boys Motorcycle Club, and a significant amount of people in the Whitney Pier area came to check out the spectacle of hundreds of leather-clad bikers.
“The streets were lined with people who pulled over, clapping hands, tooting horns . . . it was emotional,” the biker said. “I was walking towards the front of the school with a lump in my throat.”
Little Xander was bullied in school because of his size and race, and after asking the school for help, Xander’s mother realized she wouldn’t get much help. That’s why she sought help from the caring bikers.“He is a mixture of Aboriginal and African-Canadian and is 5-2 and 150 pounds,” Mike said. “He was being bullied every day. It got so bad that kids on his school bus ripped his clothes off and another student threatened they would kill him.”
The school has also responded to the tragic bullying issues but understandably isn’t able to detail much without breaking confidentiality.
“We work towards creating a safe and inclusive teaching environment for all of our students,” spokesperson Michelle MacLeod said. “That’s our primary goal. We want students and parents to recognize the signs of bullying and be comfortable reaching out to staff.”
This year alone, the school had lost the lives of three students linked to the events of bullying and cyberbullying.
“We need to make sure these kids have support. We shouldn’t be burying kids at this age.”
In any case, potential bullies might rethink their actions after seeing this impressive group of bikers pass by.
