The internet is a wonderful thing. It gives us information in an instant and really hilarious stories from humans across the globe. It’s always fun to find common ground with other people based on everyday amusing occurrences—like sharing your name, for example.
Marcus Vance recently took to Twitter to ask his followers – “what’s the biggest problem with your name?”
Of course, the responses came flooding in. His initial tweet about his name problem is below.
What's the biggest problem you have with your name?
My biggest problem?
Me: "Hi, I'm Marcus. Nice to meet you."
Business people: "Hi, Marcus. Do you go by Mark?"
Me: "No. If I did then don't you think I'd introduce myself as that?"
This Beth is just named…Beth. Straight up. Not Elizabeth. And it’s blowing people’s minds.
Me: “My name is Beth.” Then: “Short for Elizabeth?” Me: “No.” Them: “So short for …” Me: “Beth.”

2) Could you at least try?
When you have a name that isn’t common in the U.S., people just can’t seem to be able to pronounce. Or even want to try to pronounce it.
3) I’m sorry, it’s what?
Why do people always feel the need to share their ridiculous opinions on things they shouldn’t even have an opinion about?
4) *face palm*
Cathy with a ‘C’ is now Kathy Withacee. She’s just trying to live her life.
5) It’s 2020, come on now
Girls with ‘guy’ names are more popular than ever. This person has been living under a rock.
6) What’s wrong with James?
We’re not sure why people have such a hard time calling this guy Jim instead of James. They’re both one syllable.
7) And this is when you become a hermit
This poor woman has the simplest name in the entire world. And yet? People can’t seem to figure it out.
8) Just have fun with it
Why people thought Clyde was short for something, we’ll never know. But – this guy decided to roll with it.
9) Every. Single. Time.
No matter where Miguel goes to grab food to-go, the employees never seem to get his name right. Megail sounded right but Miguel never crossed your mind?
10) Almost but not quite
The actual creators of South Park are Trey Parker and Matt Stone. So…you can see the confusion here.
11) Karen has been ruined
Everyone named Karen is now officially ‘that’ woman. You know which one.
Come on, white travelers. You have to realize that there are other cultures aside from your own. Expand your mind – and the types of names you know.
13) Hugh Morris – Humerus
That long bone in your upper arm? That’s your humerus. And now if you ever meet a Hugh Morris, that is what you’ll think of.
14) It’s a 4-in-1
Amanda, Mandy, Amy, Amber. What’s going on here?
15) What does that mean exactly?
Names definitely come and go through the ages. But to come out and say something like that? Rude.

16) When your own name makes you sound like a jerk
Elle is a beautiful name but for some reason people want to go with Ellie. We say she should go ahead and correct them.
17) People see what they want to see
Even though her name is right there in the email, people will still spell it the way they think it should be spelled. They can’t help it.
18) It’s one letter, people
This poor woman has a gorgeous name and people just don’t want to spell or say it correctly. Her work nameplate was even done miscorrectly.
19) What? Why? No.
People, for some crazy reason, think that since her first name is Chesney, that she could somehow possibly be related to the country singer Kenny Chesney. What?!
20) Totally different names
Even though Gerard and Gerald are two completely different names, they do sort of sound similar. So…
21) Last names are even worse
Pick a last name, any last name, and it won’t be the correct last name! We do like that he’s “answered to” all of these names, though.
22) Estephan?
Stefan struggles with people want to add letters and spell it the way they want to. When all he wants is for someone to get it right just one time.
23) Why don’t you tell me?
Jenine struggles with people want to not only say her name incorrectly but also tell her how she should be spelling it. Annoying.
Whole life. Any Dr. Office etc. “Jeanie?” “ it’s Jenine…” “ Isn’t that spelled with an ‘A’?” “ You’re right, I must be spelling my name wrong, stupid me..” pic.twitter.com/qqB9Ic6uOI
Robert Whatever Jr. has had some super frustrating issues come up because of his name. Oh, and don’t call him Bob.
26) No. No. No. Forget it.
There are so many people out there who have to just give up and take on an entirely different name than their own just to please people.
27) It’s really not that hard
He should just tell people it’s pronounced the same way as the Greek superstar vocalist we all know and love.
28) What?
This is a bizarre conclusion to come to when explaining the name Sophia. Is it not?
29) Spelling hurts people’s brains
Melisa, even when she says her name only has one “L” and she spells it out for people, they’re still confused. How is this possible?
30) Close enough
Derry, Dairy, Dery. They all sound close enough, right? Sorry, Alice. That’s just how it is.
31) It is different, though
It’s not every day that you meet someone named Treg, so, he’s got to expect that people’s first go-to in their brain is Greg. Annoying to correct people all the time but he has his parents to thank.
32) Maybe a name tag?
Maybe some of these people would be better off rocking a name tag all the time. Like poor Kaylee here.
33) Irish names are really strange
Between Saoirse and Siobhan prounounced “Swource-y” and “Shivorn,” it’s not wonder people have a hard time pronouching Irish names.
34) Really throwing people off
Cristina is better off just spelling her name slowly every time someone asks what her name is. Because leaving things out and adding other letters gets confusing.
35) No. No, it’s not.
People can’t seem to understand that parents can name their kids whatever they want. Even Jessie!
36) Thanks, MarKus
Anyone who swaps C’s with K’s or K’s with C’s is just asking for a world of trouble when it comes to people saying or spelling their names correctly.
37) Here are multiple examples for you
It can be a bit confusing that the word ‘rough’ is pronounced ‘ruff’ but the word ‘slough’ is pronounced ‘slew.’ So with a last name like Hough, it’s going to be trouble.
38) Fun with homonyms
There are so many words out there that sound exactly the same but have totally different meanings. This guy likes to have fun with the name of his hometown of Bourne.
39) That should do it
Most people have a hard time explaining to people how to correctly but Manick has the perfect response every time. That should do it.
40) The two-first-name curse
Sometimes people’s first names are two first names combined with a hyphen. Why? We don’t know. There just is.
41) *eye roll*
We’re sure this lame joke has happened to Rich more times than he can count. If he only had a dollar for each time. He’d be…
42) Don’t you dare say it!
With a name like Alvin, you’re bound to get some Chipmunk jokes and references. But we gotta say…it would get seriously old after the millionth time.
43) I would have told you
Why would someone introduce themselves by a name they don’t go by? That would be strange. Let the nicknames come naturally.
44) Querrie?
We get that Gareth could be a little hard for people to hear correctly or mistaking it for a similar name but Gary?! Come on now.
45) Did I stutter?
Here’s another case where people want to go straight in for a nickname that was never there in the first place. Please call me by what I introduced myself as.
46) Confusing people for eternity
For a woman who is now named Katie Leslie with a full name of Katherine, there is lots of room for error here. We can only imagine.
47) Just walk away…
Oh Dyfrig, we don’t know how to pronounce your name but we feel your pain. March forth, young man.
48) Sure, we’ll go with Bob.
If you’ve taken the time to enunciate your name over two times and someone still can’t get it? Just turn around and walk away.
49) DAY-NAH
Dana is a really simple name but for some reason people have found a way to pronounce it in a dozen different ways. We give up.
50) Still Joyce
Why wouldn’t Joyce be her real name? What language are they referring to? We have so many questions. Bottom line – just call the woman by her name!
When your name is Martina but everyone keeps calling you Martini, it’s about time you just belly up to the bar and have a couple of martinis to keep yourself from going insane.
Even the vicar at my wedding introduced me as “Martini”🍸In writing I’m often a “Martin” or “Martian”. And don’t get me started on my last name. pic.twitter.com/qvHjNJC01V
