“Love needs no words as it is the universal language from the heart.” Harold W. Becker
Even with no spoken words, one would be able to show their feelings. More than speaking, we are capable of communicating through different ways such as sign language and this is a story about love, hope, and the mission of a young girl to make a change.
Meet Jade Kilduff, an 18-year old sister who wants nothing more than to share awareness of how signing is important. She aims to raise awareness so that many people will understand the importance of sign language in our daily lives.
Jade’s inspiration
This mission is not for her but for her brother and for all those who can relate. Jade’s little brother, Christian who is 4 years old has cerebral palsy that was caused by a brain injury and also has visual impairment.
Little Christian is still able to hear but his family decided to start signing to him at an early age so that they will be able to communicate.
“My dream basically is that Christian, when he’s older, will be in a world where he can talk to whoever he wants and they’ll be able to understand what he’s trying to say,”
Kilduff tells her interview with BBC.
Jade and her family use Makaton to communicate with Christian.
Makaton is a unique sign language program that uses different symbols and signs and even speech to allow people to communicate.
The mission
Jade’s dream is to allow all UK schools to teach sign language as a part of a fair way to communicate with everyone and not be limited to the people who are familiar with sign language.
It was a big dream but she has the determination and the passion to help not just Christian but everyone who needs it.
You can clearly see the love that this big sister has for her little brother. The dedication for her to share her experiences, dance, music and the world to her little brother is truly inspiring.
Sign along with us
Every dream starts with the first step. Jade created Sign along with us, a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching sign language. She often posts heartwarming videos of herself and her little brother sharing the things that they love doing, basics of how to use sign language, their milestones and of course their favorite hobby – singing and signing.
One video she posted shows her and Christian singing and signing “Someone you loved”. You’ll see just how happy the siblings are and the video itself already had 4,421k views.
When famous author Giles Paley-Phillips retweeted their viral video, Jade responded
“wow thank you so much for tweeting our video, I’m so grateful and feel so honoured that you’ve chosen our video to post ❤❤❤ Christian is my world and I’m so glad that awareness of the importance of signing is being spread x”
This tweet also went viral with 2.4M views. From here, their page and YouTube channel have started to gain the traffic that they need in order for Jade to reach out to more people.
