Brian Avey has served a lot of customers as a bartender at Buffalo Wild Wings in Tacoma, Washington. He goes out of his way to talk to them about what’s on their mind and make them comfortable.
But when a sister of a fallen soldier came in, he went above and beyond to honor her brother’s memory.
The woman came into the Buffalo Wild Wings for some lunch and ordered a Blue Moon beer and a Corona. He explained that he was only able to serve her one drink at a time per policy. That’s when she explained that the beer was for her brother who died while serving in Iraq.
She sat and ate her lunch with the Corona next to her beside an empty chair. When Avey gave her the bill he explained that the restaurant would be buying the beer. So, she left a nice little note for him on her receipt.
“Thank you. An act of kindness goes a long way,” the note said. “It means a lot to me. Have a great rest of your day.”
But even after the woman left, Avey just didn’t have the heart to get rid of the beer.
“I just couldn’t dump out a fallen soldiers beer,” he said. “I mean if someone else wanted to do it they could, but I wasn’t going to be the one to do it.”
So with permission from his manager, he placed the beer under some glass and put it on display permanently next to an American flag. He just changes the lime every day.
“If he could give his life for this country, we can give that beer a permanent place,” Avey said.
Avey posted a photo of the beer explaining his interaction with the woman. That post ended up going viral with more than 55,000 shares.
People from all around the world started calling the restaurant to say thank you.
“That beer is staying here, we’re not getting rid of that beer,” Avey said. “That beer is for a fallen soldier who protected our country. Think about someone else’s pain, it might be a little more than what you’re dealing with at the time. And I dont know how much pain she was in at the time but it felt like the right thing to do.”
