The girl in this story is currently trying to do anything to make ends meet.
But, unfortunately, there are many scammers in this world. And she recently fell victim to one…
As any student will tell you, it’s hard to get through college. On top of the pressures of exams and essays, there’s the struggle of getting through every day on an extremely limited budget.
Like many students in her situation, Kristen decided to make some money on the weekends.
She’s always loved kids, and so she decided to babysit for money.
There’s nothing shocking or unusual about babysitting and then getting paid for it. In fact, babysitting is perhaps one of the most normal ways to make quick cash in the entire world.
But the mother in this story acted like it was some crazy trick.
It began when the mother contacted Kristen online, asking if the struggling student could look after her two kids for a day.
Kristen was quick to agree and booked the time.
The day came and went. Kristen did a great job. The kids were happy, and the mom returned after a fun day out.
Kristen went home. But when she got back to her dorm, she remembered something.
She had forgotten to collect payment from the mother for watching the children. So she sent out a quick text to the mother.
The response is crazy:
Perhaps there was an actual misunderstanding. Maybe the mother really thought that Kristen had wanted to watch the children for fun?
Kristen really should have discussed this with the mother beforehand.
But that’s exactly what she did:
As you’ll see from the earlier texts, the mother is even the first one to suggest the hourly rate!
Now that Kristen had proved to the mother that she was babysitting the children for more than just “free ice cream and a day of fun,” surely the mother would pay up?
Wrong:
How does “I delete my messages often,” even qualify as a response? Kristen was showing her the damned messages, so pay up!
Many people would get into a rage over how the mother was acting. This was blatant scamming and gaslighting!
But Kristen was, if anything, measured and respectful in her response.
So how did the mother then reply back to her? With a disgusting insult of course:
Oh, and an insulting compensation offer. $20 for eight hours is $2.5 an hour. The US national minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
So how did the mother respond to Kristen pointing out the actual overall payment?
Despite the terrible actions of the mother, Kristen was then kind enough to offer a compromise.
And then the mother responded with a message so disgusting it has to be seen to be believed:
The mother then made good on her threat and blocked Kristen, potentially cutting her off from her money for good.
So what happened then?
Kristen’s sister took to the internet for advice. She wasn’t expecting the shocked outcry against the mother, however:
After the internet had stopped raging against the awful mother, they gave Kristen’s sister some sound advice.
They said that if the mother kept refusing to pay up, they should take her to small claims court.
The sisters contacted the mother’s husband and reasonably asked that they pay Kristen her money.
The husband then avoided them for several days.
With nothing else to do, Kristen sent the father a sharply worded letter, stating that she would take the mother to small claims court if they didn’t receive the money.
And guess what? The mother then paid up right away!
This shows that persistence can really pay off!
Let’s hope Kristen doesn’t get any more nightmare clients like this and that her studies go well.
