Baby’s sleep a lot of the time. They might not sleep at the opportune time, though. As most parents can attest, babies seem to be wide awake and raring to go, smack dab in the middle of the night.

After one of those sleepless nights, little Oliver wakes up and goes through the gamut of emotions. His dad must have had his morning coffee because he was awake enough to get out his camera for this special moment. Oliver has his own YouTube Channel where his parents have been documenting his growth and development from infancy.

Let’s watch and see how many emotions we can check off the list.

Basic Emotions

In an article in Psychology Today, Neel Burton M.D. explores how the idea of “basic” or “primary” emotions came about.

“It is said that basic emotions evolved in response to the ecological challenges faced by our remote ancestors and are so primitive as to be ‘hardwired’, with each basic emotion corresponding to a distinct and dedicated neurological circuit.”

Paul Ekman, a pioneer in the study of facial expressions and emotions, labeled six unique emotions that can be seen on a person’s, or in this case a baby’s face. We can use his website to explain all the emotions that Oliver expresses.

Happiness

Characterized as a feeling of well being and having positive vibes, this emotion is where most everyone wants to be. When life throws you lemons, and you have happiness coursing through your body, you can quickly make tasty lemonade. We can check off this emotion, as this happy little infant has a full boat of it in his life.

Sadness

At the polar opposite of happiness sits the feeling of loss that is called sadness. Sadness can be triggered by the loss of someone or something that was significant and important to you.

Sadness is considered a negative emotion, but we really should try and look at it from a different light. Sadness is a signal that we need comfort or help. Check this emotion off our list.

Surprise

Sudden sounds, unexpected movements, make up the brief emotion called a surprise.

Supposedly neither pleasant nor unpleasant, surprise happens when you’re caught off guard. This emotion is a springboard into the other emotions depending upon what it is that surprised you. Was it tiger jumping out of the bushes or a small bird?

Oliver is surprised to see his daddy holding a camera in his face, right as he’s waking up. Who could blame him? Check the box.

Fear

Fear arises from the threat of harm, physically or emotionally, real or imagined. Also considered by some as a negative emotion, but fear has the essential job of keeping us protected from likely dangers.

What’s Oliver got to fear? We’re just reading faces here, not minds. Check that box.

Disgust

An aversion towards something offensive. What’s offensive is dependent upon the individual. For Oliver it could be he doesn’t like the color of his pajama’s, or maybe it’s the coffee breath oozing out off his daddy’s mouth. But give dad a break, he actually needs numerous cups of coffee just to keep alive after countless sleepless nights. Check marks, please.

Anger

Blocked from reaching our goal or feeling we’re being treated unfairly releases one of the most heated emotions.

Young Oliver looks as if his blanket is treating him like a pair of old shoes, not letting him reach the deep potential of his morning stretch routine.

Check this one and the list is complete. Oliver has experienced all the basic emotions in the span of under a minute.
