In 2017, by August there had been 244 mass shootings in the United States. That is more shootings than days in the year up until that point.
The sad reality many Americans are facing right now is that school shootings are not a rarity, but are now being treated as inevitable. Many parents and teachers are trying to prepare their children for what to do in the event of a shooter attacking their school.
One aunt has come up with a method that she taught her nieces that only costs $10 and can save their lives.
After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High on Valentine’s Day, Katie Cornelis shared what she taught her nieces on Facebook.
The aunt posted just one photo. A picture of a classroom door stopper. In her Facebook post, Katie wrote:
After the Sandy Hook shooting, I gave both my nieces this little door stop to always keep in their backpacks. It truly pained me when I handed it to them, and I didn’t want to scare them, but it was out of love and they understood. In light of the recent shooting, I wanted to share this with all parents…and ANYONE else for that matter…to get themselves one (I always carry mine in my purse). Sure it’s small, but it can be powerful in keeping you safe if you ever have to barricade yourself in a room. If a gunman shoots out the door lock it will still keep the door from opening and may just buy you some time. I’m really sad posting this but a security expert shared this tip with me so I wanted to pass it on. I pray no one ever has to use it
A classroom door stopper only costs $10. God forbid her nieces are ever put in such a terrifying situation as the teens in Florida (and all over the country at this point), hopefully, the door stopper would come in handy.
The Facebook post has been shared over 1.4 million times on Facebook, with over 600,000 likes.
Many commenters are sharing the post in the effort to save a life if it ever came down to it. Classrooms already typically have door stoppers, so this extra stopper could be exactly what students would need in this event.
One commenter was thankful for Katie’s advice but saddened that it is has come down to this:
Great idea Katie …. unfortunately this is the world we are living in but it doesn’t hurt to try to be as safe as possible.
Another commenter wrote a suggestion for those in the school system:
Hey Katie. Great share. Would have never thought of that. I hope some people with positions to make it happen in schools, superintendents, PTA’s etc… see this and invest in the $2 per, or less probably when bought in bulk, and put 1 or 2 in each classroom throughout schools in every state. And add training of placing this door stopper as part of each schools active shooter drills.
Would you ever have thought to use a door stopper in a situation like this?
