When a video has been viewed over 43 MILLION times, you know there must be something special about it.
But how stunning can a “shadow performance” really be?
The dancers and artists from Attraction bring creativity and modern dance to a whole new level – one that Britain’s Got Talent audience (and its judges) could not have possibly expected. It even brought tears to their eyes!
Dance has always been used to tell stories – think of ballet’s wonderful Sleeping Beauty or Giselle.
A narrative delivered through dance can be harder to follow but requires the audience to truly appreciate the work as art.
For Attraction, the art is in both dance and the creation of shadow scenery to frame the dancers.
Some shadows are simple:
While others are much more complex:
(These are all human bodies creating the scene!)
For their Season 3 Britain’s Got Talent audition, the dancers told the story of a couple that met at England’s famous Stonehenge monument.
They fall in love, marry, and have a child, but tragedy strikes when the father must go off to war.
We won’t spoil the ending for you, but there were both gasps and tears from the crowd.
What’s impossible to appreciate until you watch the video is the flowing and flawless movements the dancers’ bodies make to maneuver into these shapes.
It’s an otherworldly form of art that leaves you visually stunned and forces your brain to grapple with shadow and light.
You may have seen the shadow dance company before. They first performed for a global audience at the Hungary Olympic Oath Ceremony at the 2012 Olympics in London.
And while the Hungarian dance troupe normally consists of 12 members, only 8 were able to perform on the reality talent competition: Torda Katalin, Tóth Alexandra, Fehér Norbert, Lakatos Andrea, Szűcs Zoltán, Szentinek Csaba, Szabados Flóra and Kántor Janka.
Each and every one of their performances on the show made one of the judges cry, though absolute awe was the most common reaction.
After advancing to the semi-finals, the troupe told a story based on founder Zoltán Szűcs life that begins with a mother giving birth to a son.
It follows the son’s childhood and adult life, and ends with the death of his mother in his arms before finding out his own wife is pregnant. The performance was dedicated to Szűcs later mother.
Remember, not are you seeing dancers here, but the shadow artists are what make up all the scenery as well!
That one even made Simon Cowell admit that he was honored that the troupe chose Britain’s Got Talent to showcase their abilities. That’s high praise from one of the world’s crankier judges!
That performance sent them straight to the finals.
Each performance earned them a standing ovation from the entire arena and judges panel, just like the first.
Constantly called the most amazing performers anyone had ever seen on the show, it’s clear why tens of millions of people the world over have watched their videos.
We have to admit – we were skeptical ourselves, but the visuals are undeniably impressive.
Since the 7th season of the show came out in 2013, you likely already know that the group won that year – only the 3rd group act to be awarded the grand prize.
