Do you have a favorite reality show?
Depending on your tastes, there’s definitely a lot of different options to choose from. If you’re a fan of dancing, you can’t go wrong with Dancing with the Stars.
If you want a bit of a wackier competition show, America’s Got Talent might be the show for you. Still, if you’re looking for a singing competition that puts a bit of a twist on singing competitions, your best bet just might be The Voice.
That’s because over the years, The Voice has proven time and time again just how surprising and interesting it is.
For those who haven’t seen it, the show works a little differently from singing shows like American Idol.
On that shows, contestants come out and the judges can see and evaluate them immediately. On The Voice, all the performers come out and do “blind auditions” where the judges have their backs turned.
If they like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around. After that, they compete to get the best singers on their respective teams—after all, the judges compete to win the season amongst themselves as well!
With this successful model, the show has proliferated all around the world.
The performance we’re talking about today came from the 2013 season of The Voice UK.
As always, the performer walks out onstage while all the judges have their backs turned. His name is Ash Morgan, and as he emerges, the backing music starts to play.
The song he’s singing is “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS. From the beginning, it’s clear that he has a soulful voice and plenty of sensuality in it as well. All the judges have their hands hovering over their buttons.
Once he hits the big chorus, he gets his first turnaround!
Although the song was a bit of an unusual choice, it’s clear that he took it to a whole new level.
Before long, one of the judges runs all the way up to the stage and lays on it, taking Morgan’s hand! On the heels of that, all the other judges are starting to get curious as well.
A moment later, Morgan gets another buzzer and then another! The final holdout, as is often the case, is judge Tom Tones. Still, at the very end Morgan stretches his voice for one last vocal run that goes up and down between microtones.
With that, even Jones hits his buzzer and Morgan gets a full four-chair turnaround!
Since the clip was loaded onto YouTube, it has earned some 36 million views.
Although there have been some great performances on this show before, this is a particularly special one. Many of the singers who come on the show try to choose a modern pop song or a modern power ballad to showcase their voice.
Instead, Morgan chose an unusual song that was a bit of a throwback, one that still packed plenty of emotion. Though it definitely takes a great voice to make it on this show, it also takes a perfect song choice—and in this performance, Morgan had both!
