Many celebrities have hidden talents that never get the recognition that they deserve. Antonio Banderas is one of those celebrities.
He’s considered one of Spain’s greatest actors. He’s also been a huge crush for multiple generations of people.
But it turns out that there’s much more to Banderas than his acting and looks. He’s also a phenomenal singer.
It makes sense when you think about it. Banderas attended multiple theatre schools, which almost always require their students to sing. But most would assume that his acting talents far outshine his singing ability.
It turns out that that assumption is wrong. And a video showing his performance at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 50th birthday proves it beyond a doubt.
In fact, based on the below video, it’s easy to believe that Banderas could have had a huge singing career.
And in the video, Banderas overcomes a massive challenge. He has to hold his own with one of the most acclaimed musicians of all time.
Banderas was tasked with singing a duet of the Phantom of the Opera with none other than Sarah Brightman.
Sarah Brightman is one of Britain’s most successful classical singers and songwriters of all time.
She’s been singing professionally since 1973, has performed in many of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage productions, has duetted with Andrea Bocelli, has sung on one of Europe’s best selling singles and twice performed at an Olympic games opening ceremony.
Clearly, this is a high bar. The prospect of singing a duet with her would be intimidating for many professional singers, let alone someone virtually unknown for their musical talent.
But Antonio Banderas’s performance is phenomenal and wows everyone present.
The video begins with the famous organ section of Phantom of the Opera.
Then Brightman walks onstage. She sings the opening of the song in a perfect soprano rendition of the lyrics.
Antonio Banderas then joins Brightman onstage. He looks calm and confident.
He opens with the lyrics, “Sing once again with me, our strange duet” in a flawless tenor voice.
And he performs the rest of the verse incredibly well. He then sings the famous line, “The Phantom of the Opera is there, inside your miiiiind.”
It might just be the best that that lyric has ever sounded.
For the next three minutes, Brightman and Banderas deliver a fantastic performance of the song. They harmonize phenomenally well and leave no one disappointed.
Anyone in the audience must have been wowed by what they had just seen!
It’s a shame that Banderas hasn’t been able to use his singing voice more often throughout his career.
But he has sung at various times in movies. For instance, in 2017, he had a supporting role in the biopic The Music of Silence. However, this movie was critically panned, gaining a zero percent score on the site Rotten Tomatoes.
He also sang in the 1996 film Evita, where he starred alongside the musical legend Madonna. This film gained mildly positive reviews and has a sixty three percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
But based on the video, it’s clear that Antonio Banderas could easily move into music full time should the acting work ever dry up.
Perhaps there’s a parallel universe where Antonio Banderas focused on his singing.
In this universe, he became an internationally renowned musician and there are articles saying, “Did you know that Antonio Banderas can act?”
