Imagine a world where rudeness is the norm, but sometimes, the sweetest comeback is a dose of kindness.
This is exactly what unfolded at a Pizza Inn in Greenville, South Carolina, where a remarkable act of kindness turned a rude encounter into an inspiring story.

It all started on a typical Sunday when Ryan Mosley, an employee with Down Syndrome, was asked by a customer to refill the salad bowl.
The customerโs dissatisfaction with Ryanโs response sparked a chain of events.
โMy manager explained to him the situation privately, โThatโs not his job. Weโve trained him to do this and there are special circumstances,โ and the customer was still not happy,โ the owner recounted.

The situation escalated when the unhappy customer suggested something quite unusual: a sign to warn patrons about employees with special needs.
Amanda Cartagine, the owner-operator of Pizza Inn, was understandably upset by this.
โThese are like my kids, and it made me angry. I wanted to do something that was not rude, but got my point across,โ Amanda stated firmly.

But Amandaโs Pizza Inn is no ordinary pizza joint.
Itโs a place where diversity and support are the secret ingredients.
Remarkably, about 60% of her staff are individuals with special needs.
Amanda is a staunch believer in their potential.
โIf you have the patience to let them take their time and learn at their pace, when the light bulb comes on, they are unstoppable,โ she said.

Amandaโs approach to business is infused with compassion and a deep sense of community.
โSome of us have different color hair, some of us have tattoos, some of us have different walks or personalities, but as a unit, we are family,โ she beautifully expressed.

Faced with the insensitive suggestion from the customer, Amanda chose a path of grace and dignity.
She put up a sign, but it was far from the warning the customer had envisioned.
Instead, it was a heartfelt message.

The sign proudly read, โWe are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and hire all of Godโs children.โ
This powerful statement of inclusion won the hearts of the community.
And as for the customer who sparked this?
Amandaโs response was clear and bold: โIf he is not OK with that, then Iโm OK with him not coming back. Thatโs a dollar that I donโt need.โ

This entire episode began with Ryan Mosley, whose growth and happiness under Amandaโs guidance is a story in itself.
Since joining Pizza Inn in the summer, Ryan has been flourishing.
His mother, Angie, shared, โHe loved the fact that he has money in the bank and he can actually go buy his favorite video game.โ
She also spoke about the challenges faced by parents of children with special needs, emphasizing the importance of breaking down barriers and stigmas.

Amanda Cartagine is doing more than just serving up delicious pizza; sheโs spreading lessons in kindness, inclusivity, and standing up for whatโs right.
Sheโs a trailblazer, encouraging everyone to embrace differences and overcome prejudices.
As Ryanโs mom hopes the sign will inspire greater open-mindedness, itโs evident that Amandaโs Pizza Inn is more than a restaurant โ itโs a beacon of hope and positivity.
