Amy Schumer is a pretty outspoken person.
Most of the time, the things that come out of her mouth are shocking and hilarious. She has no problem being honest, and when she talks about gun control, things are no different. Ever since two women got shot during a screening of one of her movies, she has been passionate about the subject.
On June 1, Amy celebrated her birthday and she used it to raise awareness about the need for gun control.
She posted a photo on social media with a caption that said:
“Hi! Tomorrow is my bday. You want to say happy birthday to me please do it by joining me for #wearorangeday tomorrow as a sign to end gun violence. Everytown.org can help!”
Amy has also taken action on the podium. Her cousin Chuck Schumer happens to be a senator in New York, and she has used his position to help speak up about the issue. At a recent press conference, she said:
“These shootings have got to stop. I don’t know how else to say it. Gun violence is ripping apart America; it’s ripping apart our families. And even those untouched by violence must every few days just look up in a stunned silence at another nightly newscast that reads like an obituary.”
She and many other celebrities made a statement about the need by wearing orange.
Amy, of course, had to do it in a bold way. She posted a photo on social media of herself in nothing but an orange sports bra. She isn’t wearing any pants or even underwear.
Amy uses her ability to shock people and get them talking with her comedy acts and in her show, as well. While not everyone enjoys her taste or sense of humor, she hopes that they will side with her on the gun control issues.
She also directed everyone to the Wear Orange Weekend website.
The site says”
“Our movement gains momentum when gun sense activists come together to fight for a future free from gun violence. Wear Orange Weekend is an opportunity for us to show the country just how powerful we are.”
Amy isn’t the only celebrity wearing orange. Many others joined in, as well. Anne Hathaway posted a photo on Instagram of her shirt scribbled over with orange. She said:
“I am traveling and don’t have anything orange to wear but I still wanted to be a part of today. Today I #wearorange to remember all those who have died, especially in schools, churches and movie theatres – spaces in which I grew up feeling safe but where the current generation cannot. I wear orange because, as per @newsweek, more children have been killed by guns since Sandy Hook than US soldiers in combat since 9/11… I also want to thank all the responsible gun owners who do not feel threatened by the call for common sense gun laws. We need your voices more than ever.”
Both Schumer and Hathaway have also scolded Hollywood for its glamorization of gun usage.
They believe that Hollywood needs to clean up its act and stop telling people and especially kids that owning guns and using them illegally is edgy and cool.
Over the weekend, there were many marches and protests held in response to the recent shootings and as part of the Wear Orange Weekend.
Celebrities and non-celebrities alike held signs, posted photos of themselves online wearing orange clothing, and created social media posts explaining their stance on gun control issue.
Change may be coming.
While it will take a lot more than wearing orange to make change, those who participated are hoping that the movement will raise awareness and get the issue noticed by lawmakers and politicians who can bring about change. There are plenty of other Wear Orange events planned and those who want gun control won’t stop until some changes are made.
