We think of nightmares as dark, dreamy scenes that evoke and draw out our darkest fears when the reality is much more subtle. The impact of having an egregious amount of student debt has crippled many students’ mental health and even their ability to build a future.
About one-third of adults under age 30 have student loan debt. The median amount of debt for Bachelor’s degree holders is $25,000 in comparison to a postgraduate degree, with an average debt of $45,000.
So, what happens when we take a look at those students suffering from larger sums of student loan debt? We get the following 30 posts that accurately show some of the feelings of going through this hellscape. After reading, you’ll soon realize why the issue of student debt has been ravaging the nation blind while students suffer under its control.
1) Bare Minimum
This person seems to think that not paying the bills is no big deal. He’s probably admitted that death will come sooner than being debt-free for this crazy amount. For a principal balance, that is an absurd amount of money that has to be paid.
2) Barely Scratching The Surface
Even a small pardon of $10k has to count for something. I get that you’re in debt, but let’s not be spoiled when offered such a generous gift. You won’t realize it now, but once the principal amount starts dwindling, then you’ll see how far along those $10k got you.
3) Paying Dues
This guy seems to have the right plan. He’s counting on a huge government relief to help him execute his debt-free strategy. Hopefully the day arrives sooner rather than later for this guy.
4) Strongly Interested
One of the worst things about being in debt is seeing interest accrue to account for inflation. It’s tough to see your balance go up after so much time paying it off. Another reason why student debt has run amok across the country with seemingly no way out for some students.
5) I’ve Got 107,135.82 Problems
This is tragic. Imagine paying all this money for a degree you don’t even use. Yikes. If you thought going to college wasn’t a business, you might have to look deeper at what’s going on here.
6) Till Debt Do Us Part
Hopefully, the consolidation helped out the situation for some time. This person is likely looking at further expenses with his divorce as well. Student debt makes it that much harder to deal with your regular life when you always have this imaginary number looming over your head.
7) No End In Sight
That’s a mighty large sum to pay off. The fact that this person had to go through forbearance should signify the gravity of the situation. Another student, unfortunately, bites the dust on this deal.
8) Loan Me To Sleep
Not only does this person owe a ridiculous amount, but it looks like their old alma mater sent a request for a donation. That’s just cruel and unusual punishment. That’s 13 years of being in debt to an institution and then they turn around to ask you for a tip. Absolutely sick.
9) Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems
These student debts are unapologetically out of hand. There’s an incredible amount of stress that comes with dealing with debt this large. Let’s hope this person catches their big break soon because nobody needs to go through the struggle of being 6 figures in debt.
10) Return To Sender
On the bright side, it’s not as much as what we’ve seen so far on this list. This person is rather fortunate they have that much time to pay it off. However, that’s still a girthy amount for someone trying to obtain a piece of paper as a diploma.
11) Rising Action
This person has given up on payments. A tacked-on amount of $3.5k was added since the pandemic and somehow that’s supposed to be okay? We can see clearly how corrupt some of these loan programs are with the mismanagement of certain students’ accounts.
12) Drowning In Debt
This one is truly bone chilling. An already paid amount of $100k took effect, yet this person still owes $81k. The light is indeed almost impossible to see at the end of the tunnel.
13) Deep Debt Dilemma
What do you do when you have a large debt of $200k? You do what you can to smile and pretend you’re not crying on the inside. At least that’s what this poor soul is doing.
14) How High Can You Go?
Look away now if you know what’s good for you. If you thought you had bad student debt, then you’ll reconsider after seeing this $300k plus student debt this person has to tackle. How one reaches such an astronomically high sum is beyond us.
15) Forgive And Finance
Our thoughts exactly, Cassaundra. The entire higher education system looks like an entire joke at times. We’ll never understand what goes on behind closed doors, but we at least know that they won’t stop knocking until they get every last penny.
16) Refund Request
Not a bad idea if that’s the cost of receiving that illustrious piece of paper. If we had the old barter system, then maybe that negotiation of trading your Master’s degree could work out. In the meantime, think of better ways to cut down on that sum as time goes by.
17) Common Cents
When you put all the factors together, it doesn’t add up. How is anyone expected to carry on with a normal life with this type of budget? They cant, and this person clearly is frustrated while going through a very precarious situation.
18) Deferred Payments
Aside from the tragedy of having $100k debt, what a way to roast your baby daddy! The clear jab at her ex-hubby at least shows she’s willing to still somewhat joke about the situation. Aside from that, you can tell this person is not caring about payments as much as she probably should be.
19) Loans That Make You Groan
We’re glad that at least Michael Jackson has some positive words to say about this. In reality, there’s nothing positive about this at all. Paying this much money for education should be a criminal offense.
20) Jesus Take The Wheel
Nothing is quite relieving as letting your woes go to the man above. If only the man above had some spare change to help you get rid of your earthly debts. In any case, keep holding onto faith if it’s the rock holding you sane through these trying times.
21) Not Interested
Just the interest alone is enough to upset your stomach. This could be anyone’s principal balance on any given day. Let’s hope this person can put a dent on this amount as soon as possible.
22) Degrees Below Zero
Not only is this person in debt, but can’t use the diploma they were awarded. It’s another reason why the system today remains broken. All those years of sacrifice and only to be paying it off as you can’t even be put to good use. It’s a terrible tragedy.
23) Paging The Doctor
Not even a doctor can help this person through her trouble. A trip to the emergency room would only suggest that the assailant was the University that held her to this payment. It’s best to take a deep breath and just come up with a plan to solve this as the years go by.
24) The Un-Graduate
Graduation nowhere in sight and already an exuberant amount of 105k in debt. Something tells us the decision to go to Grad school still hasn’t been decided upon. Only a miracle would probably coax this person, but it’s looking rather unlikely before graduation.
25) Retirement Destroyed
It’s awful seeing how student debt can destroy a person’s retirement savings. This person can’t even work to sustain themselves and now given their debt, they’ll most likely never be able to retire properly. Something has to be done about this problem that keeps crippling America’s student demographic.
26) A Far Stretch
Leaning it all on Biden might not be a wise decision. Then again, neither is landing yourself in $250k worth of debt. I wouldn’t say to hold your breath waiting for the government to do anything immediately about student debt.
27) Collector’s Edition
This guy paints a terrifying picture. No late fees or being sent off to collections, yet he’s still locked in at over $60 K. It really makes you wonder if “higher” education is really worth the debt it comes with. Maybe it’s time to invest in trade schools instead.
28) Nothing Funny About This
Some people would rather laugh to hide the crying that goes on behind the curtain. This person tried to take it positively, but we could guess they’re probably going through some heavy stress right now. The only thing left to do is to carry on and not let some number defeat you.
29) God’s Plan
You gotta love the enthusiasm and optimism in this post. God may be omniscient and omnipotent, but the bible doesn’t talk about him having any currency to spread. This student should start paying off little by little before a fate worse than hell befalls her.
30) A Lannister Always Pays Their Debts
If, of course, you descend from royalty and have all the money in the world to spend. But when you’re a broke, recently graduated student looking for a job, some debts are best left untouched. For this person, it’s a whole new ball game once that deadline comes around and they don’t see the sum start dwindling.
Americans share amount owed on student loans and the rest of the world is in total disbelief
