Just about six years ago, singer Alice Fredenham walked into her week 1 audition for Britain’s Got Talent with little to no confidence.

After walking on stage and being asked “how are you?”, she responded with a timid and quiet, “scared.”

The judges assured her to not be scared but naturally, her physical resistance did not budge.

As we got to know the shy musician, we learned that she is a 28-year-old beauty therapist who suffers from massive stage fright. When the judges asked her if she brought any friends or family along with her, she said no because “I thought if I’m not successful then I don’t have to admit that to anyone.” To that, the audience responded with an empathetic sigh.

“Stage fright is something I’ve battled with. I’m just trying to take each minute as it comes. If someone says ‘no,’ for me it’s like, ‘you’re not good enough.’ That’s where I think most of the nervousness comes from. You know, that people say no… I feel like I’m failing myself more than anything.”

As Fredenham battled her crippling nerves, she began to sing a rendition of “My Funny Valentine” and not too long after, all of the judges’ jaws dropped.

Simon Cowell, who was a bit serious at the beginning, slowly changed throughout her performance. He smiled and gave looks to fellow judges, who were all in agreement that there was something special in front of them.

The song continued on and Fredenham, while still nervous, began to warm up.

When she finished belting her heart out during one of the most emotional performances, both the audience and the judges gave her a standing ovation. It was a monumental moment, especially for someone so timid and shy.

“Wow,” Cowell proclaimed. “Oh my god. This is what I have been waiting for. Your voice is like liquid gold.”

“You have such an authentically beautiful voice… you look amazing,” he continued. “You could sing the phone book. I absolutely love you and I love your voice and you don’t even know how good you are.”

“I have to say that was the most mesmerizing, sexy, sultry performance and I fell in love with you,” Amanda Holden added, completely infatuated with the singer’s pipes.

“When you sing, you’re like a goddess. It’s incredible,” David Walliams said. He asked the sobbing singer why she was crying and she explained, “I just don’t think I’ve ever expected this response. It was my dream and now it’s just happened.”

So many tears were shed, that the host had to quickly dash on stage to hand Fredenham a tissue.

“Simply beautiful… You have let no one down,” Alesha Dixon assured the overwhelmed artist, who soon after scored a “yes” from all four judges.

“This is the easiest ‘yes’ I’ve given throughout the whole competition. Congratulations,” Cowell said.

“We can’t wait to see you. Incredible,” he added.

Fredenham continued to cry, saying that she was going to “sleep so well tonight.” Not a bad note to end on! It is so empowering to watch this timid singer regain her empowerment and follow her dreams.
