We’re often told to work hard if we want to achieve our dreams. We need to be patient and have faith that everything will work out for us in the end. And if we ever face a setback, we just need to keep pushing. For a lot of people, the idea seems like a cliche, but not for one man from Nigeria.
Mohammed Abubakar used to work as a cleaner in a Nigerian domestic airline.
He started in 1995 after missing the admission deadline for the school he wanted to go to. Instead of choosing to be unemployed and spend his time doing nothing, he chose to clean airplanes.
The salary he got for the job wasn’t that much.
Despite that, Mohammed didn’t lose hope. It encouraged him to work harder and that impressed his supervisors.
He shared:
“It was during Hajj operation, and I was earning N200 per day, even though many believed that I wouldn’t do it because of the meagre money involved. I was later employed as ground staff with the airline in Maiduguri. Through my service in the company, I worked in almost all the units, except security. That helped me a lot in the aviation sector.”
From cleaning airplanes, he was able to gradually move up the ranks. He worked in different departments and that gave him the chance to learn more about the aviation industry.
From being a member of the ground staff, he was promoted as a cabin crew member and that entitled him to a great pay. After that, he was promoted as a flight attendant.
Because the Deputy Managing Director of the aviation line he was working for back then was so impressed by his performance, Mohammed was awarded a huge salary. He started saving money at that point.
With enough money, Mohammed was able to get his private license in Canada.
This marked the start of his career as an aircraft pilot. His company has a strong faith in what he can do so they sponsored him. This allowed Mohammed to pursue a commercial license.
About two years after, Mohammed officially became a pilot for Azman Air.
And despite making his dreams come true, he’s still working hard to be better.
Since Mohammed was able to work from the bottom up, he’s very likely to become an excellent pilot and crew leader. He knows exactly what it feels like to be at the bottom so he’ll be able to relate with the other employees well.
Mohammed’s story is truly inspiring.
It simply proves that even if you face rejection or denial at one point in your life, it doesn’t mean that it’s the end of everything for you. With patience, hard work, and a strong belief in yourself and what you can do, you can definitely change your path.
Mohammed took 24 long years to turn his life around. Although it was a really long time of being patient and working hard, the sacrifice was truly worth it.
He’s not just enjoying better pay and a better life now, but he’s also able to serve as an inspiration to a lot of people.
