Our planet is the 5th largest in the solar system. It has a circumference of about 40,075 km so it will take a long time to orbit the planet even in the fastest jet available. But thanks to modern technology, we can virtually visit and see different places without spending too much money.
Check out the size differences of certain states, countries, and continents here. It gives us a pretty good idea of just how much we are missing. For instance, would you expect Canada to fit inside Africa so well here?
We don’t know it all, contrary to popular belief.
1. The United States vs. Australia
When you think of America, it’s perfectly normal to wonder at just how huge the country is. Because it is. Think of Australia though and not a lot of people will think that it’s enormous in its own right. This map should open a lot of eyes though. Australia is massive!
Idaho. A northwestern U.S. state known for its mountainous landscapes, vast swaths of protected wilderness, and outdoor recreation areas. And yes, it is a big state. Stick it in an island country like Greenland though, and it sits right smack in the middle. At least Idaho is comfortable.
So about Greenland… It almost dwarfs the state of Idaho but put Greenland in Africa and, well… The problem is Greenland did not bless the rains in Africa. Sorry.
Known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque coastlines, Florida is on every vacationers list. The Norwegian sea is wide enough to house the state of Florida though. Enough to surround the US state with water. And have extras for ships.
The middle east boasts of a rich history, with a variety of cultures and a lot of controversial moments. Vast deserts with preserved ancient cities make for amazing photos for travelers.
Nevada, being the 7th most extensive, the 32nd-most populous, and the 9th-least densely populated of the U.S. states finds itself crushed by the massive lands of Iran. Persia was a powerful ancient civilization, one that made good use of all its space.
India takes up about half of America’s space. And yet, India is the 7th largest country by area, the second-most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. So imagine cramming all of those facts in a country that’s about half of an already well populated America.
Everyone goes on about how, when Texans visit family across the state, they’ll need to drive for a long, long time. That’s true, so imagine having to visit family across Africa. Gas budget is crying. But hey, imagine the adventure that awaits.
8. Greenland Vs. South America
Greenland seems intimidating, especially since its not often discussed, but it’s not that huge compared to South America. Then again South America is just massive. Like really huge.
9. Greenland is turning Japanese
Well no but an immersion will always leave a few influences here and there. They’re both islands technically so it is interesting to see their differences in terms of land mass. Time for a visit.
People think of wide open plains with forests, mountains, and lots of animals. And they’re right but Africa also has big cities. No one gives much thought to just how enormous this continent is but here you go. It’s right there too, so visiting isn’t exactly difficult. There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do…
11. United States vs. China
Enough with the political jokes. Sure they don’t always get along but they have similarities in the fact that they are both one huge piece of land. It’s probably a good thing that these 2 superpowers are so far apart anyway.
12. New Zealand sitting Midwest
New Zealand consists of two main landmasses. The North Island (
Te Ika-a-Māui) and the South Island (
Te Waipounamu). Oh, and over 700 smaller islands too. Hard to fathom how that is especially seeing how small it is sitting in the US Midwest.
Two different places with vastly different cultures. Except pizza but we’re talking about a state that’s about more or less the same size as a country. Like many toppings on a pizza.
It’s a high-heeled boot over an eastern sneaker this time. Italy was never marketed as a big country. They’re more about the culture, the food, and the mob. Wonder if the mob ever dealt with alligators…
15. Montana fits in Mongolia
Montana’s diverse terrain ranges from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, with wide-open spaces and a vast wilderness preserve that passes into Canada. It’s a picturesque state that is large enough to intimate travelers but it is a child compared to Mongolia’s vast rugged expanse.
16. China being friendly with Russia
It’s up to you to decide which one is bigger. After all, these 2 nations are all about sizes and numbers. Pretty close to each other geographically speaking but way different in terms of lifestyle and culture.
17. Cuba going for a dip in the Hudson
Cuba is another island country, known for its difficulties in terms of Americans visiting but it’s not impossible. But at least Cuba can fit in the Hudson bay. Then again, Canada is pretty massive.
So going back to just how incredibly large Canada is. Put it in the continent known as Africa and you have a little hatchback next to an SUV. Once again proving just how much people underestimate Africa. Back to geography classes then.
