War movies are some of the best out there. As humans, we love to look back on the wars of our past with a bit of reverence and sobriety. We are reverent for the people who laid down their lives and we are solemn when considering some of the atrocities that happened. When it comes to movies, some show the real story a bit better than others, however. We have a list of the most “true to life” movies when it comes to war and we think you’ll agree!
1. We Were Soldiers
Directed by Mel Gibson, this classic shows the Vietnam War over the Battle of la Drang. They stayed true with the military tactics used and was filmed from both perspectives, giving an interesting view.
2. Black Hawk Down
A somewhat recent film, Black Hawn Down details the real-life events of soldiers in Mogadishu when a helicopter went down in a highly dangerous area.
3. Saving Private Ryan
The Tom Hanks classic, Saving Private Ryan is known as one of the best movies of all time, let alone best war movies. With that said, there are some real historical issues with the portrayal of the war, namely the whole idea they would spend resources to look for one man. The D-Day scene, however, was so accurate that veterans struggle to watch it to this day,
4. Letters from Iwo Jima
Iwo Jima was one of the most brutal fronts of WWII and took place on the Pacific theatre. It is told from the perspective of the Japanese and is known to be incredibly accurate.
5. Full Metal Jacket
FMJ was created with the intention of showing war accurately. It showed boot camp and treatment of recruits and shows nearly perfect examples of Vietcong tactics and the underlying political shifts.
6. Glory
Our first movie on the list depicting the Civil War, Glory follows Robert Gould Shaw, a commander in charge of one of the first all-Black regiments known as the 54th Massachusetts. It’s hard to watch and based on the real-life letters of Shaw.
7. A Bridge Too Far
This film shows an Allied attempt at entering Germany through the Netherlands through a paratrooper’s drop. Known as Market Garden, the initiative was depicted accurately in the film, although it does have a few inaccuracies.
8. Lone Survivor
An amazing film, Lone Survivor shows the story of four Navy Seals who are forced to fight for their lives over days as the Taliban closes in on their location. From the stories of the Lone Survivor, it wasn’t all that different from what really happened.
9. Tora! Tora! Tora!
Codenamed “Tiger”, Tora! shows an accurate depiction from both sides of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese and the Americans. It was a bit of a tedious film, but it still holds its place for being accurate.
10. Stalingrad
There are two movies named Stalingrad, one released in Germany in 1993 and another in Russia in 2013. The German release is a tragic story and is known as one of the most accurate war films ever. Its period weapons were also pretty diverse.
11. 1917
A relatively new movie on the list, 1917 is known for its incredible scenes that were depicted as a single take. They literally dug 2,500 feet of trenches for the movie and the resulting depictions are truly amazing.
12. Hamburger Hill
Hamburger Hill follows a two-part breakdown. First is the indoctrination of the soldiers at boot camp for the Vietnam War, and the second was the day-to-day of the war itself. It’s among the most accurate of all the war movies and even incorporated special grunt slang.
13. Enemy at the Gates
One of the more popular films on the list, Enemy at the Gates follows the story of two snipers fighting in Stalingrad. There are some inaccuracies but overall it’s an impressive film.
14. Platoon
Platoon was literally written and directed by a veteran from the Vietnam War. The story doesn’t follow actual events, but it was intended to show mindsets and themes.
15. 84C MoPic
The budget of the film was tiny but it was created as one of the first examples of “found footage” films. It’s clear-cut and shows mostly the day-to-day activities of the platoon.
16. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
The film follows the Napoleonic wars on the ship the HMS Surprise. It’s a slow-paced film, but it depicts naval battles from the time pretty accurately.
17. Act of Valor
Act of Valor is about a Navy SEAL team tasked with rescuing a CIA operative and is known as being scary accurate. Some even say it blurs the line from fictionalized event to documentary.
18. Rescue Dawn
Rescue Dawn follows Dieter Dengler, a US pilot stuck in a Laos internment camp. It shows capture, torture, and more as the pilot struggles to escape.
19. Sergeant York
The film follows the story of a young man who needs to be convinced to fight in WWI. With some helpful and convincing words from the Bible and some courage, the man soon goes to capture 30 machine guns and takes 130 prisoners of war. It’s based on a true story, to boot!
20. Come and See
This Soviet WWII film shows the brutal things the Nazis did during their occupation of Belarus. It’s a rough film to watch without feeling sick to your stomach, but it is accurate and based on real photo evidence, not that you’d want to see them.
21. The Great Escape
The Great Escape was released when accurate films weren’t really appreciated or even wanted. It was condensed to make everything fit, but it follows three soldiers who are tasked with digging tunnels to help POWs escape a camp.
22. Jarhead
Lots of Marines say the depictions in the book and subsequent film aren’t great and discredit lots of other people. Still, the movie went to great lengths to accurately capture the real life of the soldiers.
23. The Kill Team
The Kill Team is an adaptation of the real-life of Private Adam Winfield. Those real-life events were later dubbed the Maywand District Murders and the film depicts the things that lead soldiers to commit war crimes.
24. MASH
MASH was released back in 1970, but it shows the day-to-day routines of the men and women working on the base and the things they did to make life somewhat bearable. It isn’t always accurate, but many things were spot on.
It may take you a while to get through all these films, but we can assure you they are all worth it! Some are narrative and others are historical – either way, they are a beautiful tribute and a wonder to witness.
