The now 19-year-old Malyk Bonnet from Montreal is being called a local hero thanks to his courageous and extremely ingenious efforts to save a woman from kidnapping by her ex-boyfriend.
A while back in 2015, he trusted his gut feeling and might have very well saved a woman’s life. Malyk was simply waiting for his bus to arrive after his shift at a restaurant when he noticed a couple getting into a hefty argument.
When the man started screaming at the woman, he put up a red flag for himself and knew he had to intervene before things took a turn for the worse.
“The guy was screaming at her, the girl,” Malyk said in an interview with CBC News. “He wasn’t really gentle with her, and I started watching, because I thought he would hit her, so I approached them a little bit.”
Before Malyk had a chance to intervene, he was asked by the man and the woman for bus fare money to a nearby city, but he didn’t feel comfortable. However, he knew that the man seemed abusive, so instead of minding his own business and declining, he wanted to get to know them better to see if and how he could help the woman in any way.
Malyk paid for both of their fares and lied to them, saying he was also planning to go to Laval, the nearby city they needed tickets to.
“My plan was to keep them in a public place where he wouldn’t hurt her,” Bonnet told Dateline NBC. “I decided to be friendly with the man and have him think I was his friend. I played my game and he seemed to trust me.”
When the three finally arrived at their destination, Malyk decided that it would be best to keep a closer eye on things, and actually tried to befriend the man. He suggested that they’d all go to get something to eat together, and left a $50 bill for the couple in the restaurant, after which he excused himself to the bathroom.
It didn’t take look before the brave teen took out his cell phone and dial 911 to report a kidnapping.
It turns out that the police was actually already on the lookout for the man, as the abusive man abducted his ex-girlfriend earlier in the day.
“We were looking for a 29-year-old woman who was kidnapped by her former boyfriend earlier that day,” Laval police Lt. Daniel Guérin told CBC News. “We believed that man was very dangerous.”
After the police intervened, Malyk recalled how relieved the abducted woman was that someone was able to help.
“We made eye contact and she had tears in her eyes. She was really happy.”
The police department can’t praise him enough.
“His quick actions may have saved this young woman’s life,” Guérin said. The officers made sure to collect money so Bonnet could be reimbursed for the bus fares and food he purchased while trying to save the victim. “He now has 500 new friends in our department.”
What an incredible young man!
