When your favorite song comes on and you feel the need to get down and boogie, sometimes there is not anything you can do but put down whatever is in your hands and start dance away. Even at a young age, music touches our souls. It drives us and inspires us. When we hear a familiar beat or when we hear our favorite song start to play, something happens inside us and we cannot help but feel a sense of joy and excitement. That is what happened with this little girl when she heard her favorite song. She had to dance – now!

A little girl in a red dress and white skirt is standing in her kitchen listening to music with her family. We see her brother dancing around to the driving rhythm of the song.

The beat is strong and you can tell the little girl has heard this song before. She begins to bob her head up and down and starts to rock back and forth, squatting her knees trying to dance with a bowl of food and a spoon in her hands.

She sets her food down so that she can dance.

Then she cannot hold on to her food any longer, so she carefully sets the bowl of food down on the rug in the kitchen and very carefully lays the spoon inside the bowl. Now, with both hands free and empty to move, she begins to dance.

She taps her right heel up and down and raises her arms up, rolling her shoulders back as she dances to the beat of the rhythm. At one point, she starts to lose her balance and leans against the fridge which keeps her on her feet. She then jumps up and spins around while her mom giggles in the background.

Many studies have been done around the world by physicians and scientists trying to learn how music affects the brain, particularly in young children. After a famous study in 1993 related to the music of classical composer, Amadeus Mozart, physicians at Tel Aviv Medical Center found that premature babies gained weight faster and were stronger when listening to classical music for 30 minutes a day.

Additional studies were done showing that children who sang regularly had stronger immune systems and were healthier and more emotionally stable than children who did not have a strong musical background. Music helps children better solve analytical problems, helps develop their language and communication skills, and increases their hand-eye coordination when learning to play an instrument. Music gives them confidence and inspires them to be creative. The facts and statistics go on and on, but there is no doubt that introducing music to children at a young age helps them develop.
