"I kept many male friends throughout the years, some alive now, some gone. There were passes and moves made, but I was too busy loving life as an individual."

Many attribute a long life to diet and exercise amongst other things. But one woman attributes it to banning the one thing that brought her immense heartache and stress.

Men.

That’s right. 90-year-old Claire says that the reason that she has lived such a long life is because she doesn’t have to stress about a man.

Well then, Claire! Do tell.

In a piece she wrote for Love What Matters, Claire details how when she became single, she realized men did nothing but hold her back from happiness and her full potential.

You can tell Claire has a great sense of humor and a quick wit just by the way she begins her article.

At first, she claims that her name is “Agnes Gertrude Eleanor” but continues that she is only kidding.

“I bet you would expect me to have an old lady name like this, but my mother was a sensible woman! My name is Claire. Granny enough for ya? Ha ha.”

She even refers to herself as a prune but writes she is a living prune nonetheless!

Claire is in great shape health-wise. Physically, mentally, and spiritually. She is living and loving her life.

The reason Claire decided on a life without a man isn’t complicated.

She writes that she witnessed men cheat, battle addictions, and end up leaving their wives behind to clean up the mess.

“In my lifetime, I’ve known dozens of men to cheat on their wives, turn to the needle and abandon them, die and leave them heartbroken. I just wanted no part in it.”

In fact, she herself found herself in that very predicament and that’s when she decided enough was enough.

It was not the sort of life she wanted.

Claire describes her husband and all of the baggage that came along with being married to him.

“(He) cheated, battled addiction, lost, overdosed, leaving me being in a trail of tears, betrayal, and heartbreak that took me a WHOPPING ten years to get over.”

Ten years is a lot of time!

But Claire chose herself first and though she’s had suitors since, she just wasn’t interested in any of them.

“I kept many male friends throughout the years, some alive now, some gone. There were passes and moves made, but I was too busy loving life as an individual.”

Claire takes care of herself and doesn’t have to worry about the demands a significant other could put on her. Through it all, she’s persevered.

“I cook, I clean, but for myself!”

She writes that when asked what the key to longevity is, she keeps it simple.

“You don’t need no man!”
