For kids, their parents are their source of guidance. They look up to them whenever they need to make big decisions or whenever they need encouragement.

So, when Jake Arsenault’s parents told him that he could wear his hot dog costume for his school photo, he was thrilled.

Jake’s parents, Craig and Kari, didn’t just tell their 9-year-old kid that he could wear his Halloween costume that day. The couple actually dared their son to do it. They even promised to give him $10 if he agreed.

Jake was a bit of a clown. Although he felt nervous about the idea of actually wearing a hot dog costume to school, he happily agreed.

To reassure the teachers, Jake came to school with a written permission slip from his parents, saying that they were totally agreeing with their kid’s decision to wear a costume for his school picture.

“We are aware and OK with Jacob Arsenault’s intention to wear his hot dog costume for school pictures, if possible. Please let this happen!”- the couple wrote.

Jake didn’t just own the school photo but he also became an instant celebrity that day.

He got tons of high fives, particularly in the hallways. There were also whispers throughout the day about the kid who wore a hot dog for the school photo. His classmates considered the idea awesome and they were ecstatic to get close to him.

Jake loved the attention he received from his class.

He was genuinely happy about it. And when he was visited by a meat and cold cut production company, he got extra excited.

Wienermobile Mayer’s hot dog-on-wheels gave the fourth-grader a special treat for what he did and his viral photo. There were also a few kids who came up to him for some pictures.

If there’s one thing Jake regrets, it’s the fact that he chose to dress up as a hot dog on a school half-day. He could’ve had more fun if he wore the costume for a normal-length day of classes.

Although he’s not likely to regret ever coming to school as a hot dog, Jake has a spare copy of his school ID. He was wearing regular clothing for it.

The school is getting praises, too.

It turns out that Jake and his parents aren’t the only ones deserving to be praised. The school deserves some good words, too.

You see, not every school is open to the idea of having their students wear costumes for their school photos. Some would reprimand students for showing up to school with different hair colors or wearing unusual clothes. Others would even suspend students for not following their strict rules.

The fact that the school agreed to Jake’s idea is commendable. Schools are considered as a kid’s second home. It’s only right for them to encourage and support their students. Doing that can help boost their self-confidence which is critical for their success in the future.
