An intruder bent on robbing an 82-year-old grandma had a rude awakening. The man pounded on the door of Willie Murphy’s Rochester, New York, home.
He lied through the closed door, telling her he was hurt and needed her to call an ambulance. He asked her to let him in.
The kindhearted Willie called 911 for him, then regretted being so nice. The man became angry at her for not letting him in the house and he burst through her door determined to cause her harm.
But Willie was ready for him.
“It’s kind of semi-dark and I’m alone, and I’m old. But guess what, I’m tough. He picked the wrong house to break into.”
Why was Willie so confident? Because she’s an award-winning bodybuilder who weighs 105 pounds and can deadlift 225 pounds.
Last year, ESPN featured Willie, who spends her free time working out and volunteering at a local health clinic, showing other seniors how to exercise using just a chair and steps.
“Strangers, they come up to me … and they give me love and they take time to say, ‘I want to be just like you. To me, I’m loving it. Because I think if you’re able to be independent you should do some type of exercise.”
It’s her determined mindset, competitive nature and excellent physique that enabled her to defend herself and her home against the intruder. This octogenarian competes at powerlifting meets and wasn’t about to let the intruder win this match.
First, she grabbed a table and began smacking him with it.
“I took that table and I went to working on him. And guess what? The table broke.”
She quickly grabbed the metal legs of the table and kept right on hitting the man. Then she started jumping up and down on him.
Willie hustled into the kitchen, snatched up a bottle of baby shampoo and squirted it on his face and in his eyes when he tried to get up. Then she grabbed a broom and smacked him around some more.
The man tried to escape and Willie tried to help him get out of the house, but couldn’t.
