As a child, many young minds have been intrigued by the possibility of doing magic in real life. And while many eventually learn that “Harry Potter” style magic is not real, some take the next logical step and learn some of the secrets of the next best thing, stage magic. Take 8-year-old Izzy Simpson for instance. She learned how to do her magic tricks from her grandpa, who she says is a wizard.
A natural performer
Izzy starts by giving a little background on herself. From Blackpool, Izzy told about how her grandpa taught her how to do magic starting from a young age. Izzy wants to be Hermione Granger from “Harry Potter” when she grows up because she is a wizard, or as in Hermione’s case, a witch. On the show, Izzy hoped to impress judge Simon Cowell because he is the boss.
When asked backstage why she like magic, Izzy responded, “I think what I like about magic is that I can make everyone gasp and go wow.”
Impressing Simon
Izzy starts out by giving judges David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, and Amanda Holden each one of her favorite books from the box she carried on stage and asked them to make sure all of the pages were different. She then had Simon attempt to move the box for her, which he couldn’t, even after getting David Walliams to help.
Simon picks a card
Izzy then removed a deck of cards from the box before easily picking up the box by herself and moving it. Returning to the judge’s table, she had Simon pick a card, telling him to look at it without anyone else seeing it. Izzy next asked Simon to pick a number from a book of his choice. Simon chose Alesha’s book.
Izzy then had Simon pick a page number from the 600 pages of the book Alesha had. He chose page 77. Izzy asked Alesha to pick a word from that page. Alesha picked the word “kettle. Izzy then said she had written a word on a blackboard before the show. Walking over, Izzy removed the cover over the blackboard and turned it around to reveal the word “kettle” written on it in chalk.
Another big reveal
As the judge’s applauded her trick, with all of them giving her a standing ovation, Izzy told them to stop. She then asked for Simon to reveal the card he had chosen. After telling her it was the four of diamonds Izzy removed the jacket she had been wearing to reveal her shirt, which had Simon holding the four of diamonds, thus wowing the judges even more.
The judges say yes
Of course, all of the judges gave Izzy a resounding yes to moving through on the show. Not only had Izzy entertained and wowed the judges with her magic act, but she had also won their hearts with her precocious and sassy nature. After all was said and done, the judges were left wondering how exactly the little 8-year-old had performed her tricks.
Izzy’s run on the show
The 8-year-old claims that she was born to do magic. She wowed the judges with a series of mental tricks during her time on the show “Britain’s Got Talent,” including the above-mentioned book and card trick. Izzy ended up as the runner up on the 2017 edition of “Britain’s Got Talent” and also appeared on the U.S. version of the show, “America’s Got Talent,” in 2019. Here is a video of Izzy’s first appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent.”
