“Love yourself” we always say. It’s great to give love to other people, but don’t forget to love yourself too. When no one else does, there’ll still be you to do it.
But some people take “love yourself” to totally new levels.
Meet Dorothy Fideli, who had a very crazy interpretation of “love yourself.”
The 77-year-old resides in a retirement home and has been married once. She’s a mom and a grandma too.
Dorothy spent a lot more “alone time” than most people. Owing to how much older she is, Dorothy learned to be independent.
She had an epiphany one day in church that led to an unusual decision of hers that made the news.
Dorothy decided to marry herself. Yes, you read that right.
But why? The answer is simple. Dorothy says in the 40 years she’s been alone, there was one person who always believed in her, supported her, and loved her no matter what. That person was herself, and she meant it.
Indeed, Dorothy mastered the art of self-love that we younger people struggle with so much.
She was already married once. In 1965, Dorothy was married in a court ceremony. Not nearly as pretty or elegant as a church wedding. In fact, she recalls that she just went home like normal after the ceremony, and he went to work like usual too.
That may be why she feels so happy to wear an actual bride’s dress this time.
Her last marriage wasn’t there to last, and she was divorced after 9 years with her previous spouse.
“I have been with myself for 40 years. Something just came over me one day in church that, ‘you want to do something special for yourself,” said Dorothy
But even though her gesture was a somewhat cheeky, literal interpretation of “loving yourself”, Dorothy still emphasizes that the way we understand “love yourself” is still an important lesson.
On many days, we might find ourselves overthinking and hating ourselves for things we did in the past.
That’s always a recipe for disaster, especially if you do it often. Anxiety can hurt you in more ways than you can imagine.
Before you know it, your mind’s too busy focusing on all the things you did wrong then you end up feeling like trash.
While you don’t have to make a cheeky ceremony marrying yourself as she did, there’s others ways to love yourself.
Maybe no one’s gonna give you roses or take you on a date right now, but you can sit down, treat yourself to something, and say how proud you are of yourself.
“If it’s not in the cards for them, then there’s something out there that’ll make them happy and let them find themselves in life.” she said in closing.
As for Dorothy’s solo wedding, all I’ll say is that I’m curious what the reception and honeymoon are gonna be like. At least paying for food and everything sounds like it would be easier.
