For those of us with a black thumb, it seems like no matter what we do we can’t seem to keep a plant alive despite our best efforts.
There’s an entire subreddit devoted to the wizards that take pathetic plants and turn them into fabulous foliage. On r/Plant_Progress, people post photos of plants when they first got them or propagated them, and then after they rebounded or flourished.
Ahead are 75 of our favorite transformations.
1. Succulent surprise
This is just a little over 2 months worth of growth under the right conditions!
2. Jaded
The poster said the trick was simply fertilizer and sunshine.
3. Peppy peppermint
But within a month it received everything it needed to grow again.
4. Super succulents
This plant owner propagated some new plants and from July 21, 2019 to February 12, 2020 managed to get three thriving plants out of the cuttings of their original.
5. It’s a monster(a)!
The leaves are already splitting and this plant person insists they did nothing extra special to get it to go wild.
6. Impressive propagation
We’ve definitely managed to make plants look like the first photo, but that’s usually AFTER they looked like the last.
7. Grow, baby, grow!
The plants are climbers, but this is some great growth for such a short period of time.
8. Viable violet cutting
This progress is even more special since the grower took the cutting from their late grandmother’s plant.
9. Growing down and out
These heart-shaped leaves are beating fast.
10. From puny to plump
“All my Haworthia get 100% grit in the form of akadama, slow-release fertilizer, light from a west-facing window in the summer, and LED grow lights in the winter. They sit in an open window during the dry summer, and a closed winter with a fan for air circulation during the wet winter. I water a few days after the substrate is fully dry.”
That’s more complicated than our own daily routine!
11. Your pot overfloweth
Then again, it lives in Charleston, South Carolina where it can stay outside and soak up that glorious sunshine all year round.
Wish we could say the same for ourselves!
12. Dynamic duo
We’d say this owl pot has finally got some feathers in its cap!
13. Wet and wild
And while it lost its ruffle, it’s now living the true succulent lifestyle by sucking up all that water in the intervening 5 months.
14. Falling raindrops
And you always have the option of pushing those vines back in the pot to make it more dense before the raindrops start falling on your head.
15. Plump and purple!
But we suspect there’s a little oversaturation of the photograph here – unless this is the purplest specimen ever!
16. Progress after patience
The owner said it was super slow at first, but that’s clearly no longer the case.
17. Cat carnage
But it only needed a few days – and a replant.
18. From mangled to marvelous
But after its dramatic rescue and recovery period, it’s nearly as good as new.
19. Crunchy turns curly
The person who took custody of this Hoya managed to get it to go from dry and damaged to plump and curvy in just 5 days.
20. Ostentatious orchid
But this lucky orchid owner was given the plant back in 2016 and – despite almost killing it several times – finally got it to bloom.
21. Vivacious vines
From August to the following January, this little green guy was in a pretty good mood as he reached out to touch everything around him.
22. Jubilant Jade
And it’s growing nice and dense too!
23. Gone bananas
The plant is nicknamed String of Bananas and this one managed to thrive even in the winter months!
24. Bursting buds
Can you imagine what it’ll look like if it keeps growing at that rate?
25. Fee fi fo, fiddleleaf
“This little guy went from fitting on my windowsill to growing more than half of my height. The far-left photo is from when I got him (about a foot tall). The middle photo is after repotting, and the far-right photo is the same pot last week.”
26. These hearts will go on
It gets a bit of patio sun each day and water when it looks dry, but the owner didn’t mention any wizardry in the making of this plant.
27. Tendrils of tails
It looks so lush and healthy!
28. Ferning foliage
And interesting trade, but clearly they thought saving the plant was better than blocking the sun.
29. Succulent savior
And the Redditor was rewarded for their work with a beautiful deep purple hue.
30. Up and at ’em
It’s hard to know when to trim back plants since that can sometimes work against you.
31. Fierce four months
We try, but ours aren’t quite as cooperative.
32. From nub to shrub
The poster said this is after just nine months.
We could no doubt kill that in 9 days.
33. Radiant rubber plant
Only a few months of love and care brought this plant to its full potential.
34. A boon for Brasil
And we can’t help but marvel that this tiny cutting turned into such a hearty plant in a year.
Just look at these beautiful, healthy leaves!
35. Plant on the run
While these plants are pretty hard to kill, some of us know that they’ll also just sit there and not show much progress.
36. Begonial boom
After 2 months, this plant rescuer managed to take this drooping plant and make it one seriously happy camper.
37. Lavish and lush
It got repotted and there’s a layer of sand to protect it from gnats, but after that, it was just the right kind of sunlight and bi-weekly watering that turned this plant into a gorgeous bush.
38. Hooray for humidity
Apparently they need some humidity, so if you’re going to give this one a try, it’s probably best not to pick one up in winter.
39. Purple passion
But it wasn’t without effort. It has the benefit of special grow bulbs, peat and pearlite mix, regular prunings, and pH-adjusted tap water. And that’s more effort that a lot of us want to put in.
Alas, the rewards are great when you do!
40. Reach for it
But the owner assured everyone that all was well. It has a grow light and sunlight – which is more healthy light that most humans get in a day.
41. From shrinking to swelling
It must feel so good to look in and see that progress!
42. From fledgling to flowering
The owner is just working on beefing up those stems so she isn’t so top-heavy.
43. Get the sunlight right
Now that it’s no longer in direct sun it’s got room to grow without being too overwhelmed.
44. She’s got legs
This gives us some hope for the plants we have that look a lot like the one on the left.
45. Swole succulent
And it’s clearly working. This is its progress between 2/13/2019-12/12/19.
46. Vining with vitality
For whatever reason, these are plants that would rather be neglected (relatively, at least).
47. Mean and green
It’s got some special soil and grow lights since it lives in a dark apartment
48. Putting the miracle in Miracle Grow
This is just 6.5 months worth of progress – and the owner admitted that they needed to be turning the plant more for equal sunlight.
49. Grandma’s garden
A lot of plants require some serious patience if you want to see results.
50. From rough to ready
It hardly looks like the same plant anymore!
51. Maturing and multiplying
This Sempervivums went through quite a growth spurt in just 8 months.
52. And extra side of pork and beans
It’s a gorgeous specimen of Sedum rubrotinctum, also called “Pork and Beans.”
53. Prospering propagation
In order to get it so lush, the owner kept taking cuttings and replanting them in the same soil.
54. Tremendous transformation
But that all changed by late March when the work paid off and it began to thrive.
55. Growth spurt
That little owl now has some serious company in the flower pot!
56. From failing to fiddling
That’s some incredible growth!
57. Hulked out
It’s incredible how different a plant can look when it’s reaching its full potential.
58. Dynamic dangling
That’s quite a bit of growth – and it’s lush and full to boot!
59. Are you kitten me?
It looks a lot happier there!
Apparently kittens are not a magic plant growth strategy.
Go figure.
60. From cub to bear
It looks like it’s going to need a bigger pot pretty soon!
61. Maidenhairs so fair
And the summer humidity was all it needed to grow, grow, grow!
62. Glow up
This is it 3 months after its rescue!
63. Turtle power
It looks like it’s getting the perfect amount of care.
64. Rooting for the underdog
Stripping it of leaves to encourage root growth and using a ziplock back to seal in the moisture was their secret to success.
65. Pretty in pink
Humidity, indirect light, and a whole lot of luck are the keys.
66. Stalking spider
They’re not that hard to grow, but we’ve managed to kill a few in our time!
67. Dry your tears
After a repotting and some sun and a few months to recover, it’s now overflowing with happy tears.
68. Out of the pits
Other commenters couldn’t believe how big it got.
Apparently, the key is living in a place like Albuquerque where it’s hot and humid.
69. Unbeleafable
While the top photo is the more recent one, the whiteness is natural variegation and the plant is happy and healthy.
70. You grow, girl
You can grow them elsewhere, but warmth and sunlight are the keys.
71. Leaf of faith
Now it’s pretty in pink.
72. From trash to treasure
Now it hardly fits in its owner’s apartment!
73. Flourishing fern
That’s one heck of a recovery!
74. Say aloe to my little friend
Now it’s ready to soothe some sunburns.
75. Jenny be creeping
These plants spread easily, so it’s always a good idea to keep them potted if you don’t want them everywhere.
These photos make it pretty clear that you don’t have to give up on a plant.
What’s your secret to getting your greenery to grow?
