Whether air, land, or sea – border security is tough. Security agents all across the country are searching, scanning, x-raying, and doing everything possible to make sure they keep the public safe. And despite all of this – people still think that they can smuggle illegal goods past them.
Wannabe smugglers have tried to sneak some of the strangest things past the border – and we found 70 of the weirdest.
Thanks to the TSA Instagram account – we get to see some of the most insane items people have tried to smuggle through customs. What are some people thinking?!
1) Freddy Krueger claws in carry-ons are totally normal
Nightmare on Elm Street fans might love this razor glove that was found in a passenger’s carry-on bag in Atlanta. Well, hey – it looks like they at least tried to cushion the sharp claws?
2) Might not want to munch on these candy bars
Believe it or not, someone thought it was a smart idea to try and smuggle a quarter-million dollars worth of methamphetamine from Los Angeles to Tokyo. How? They disguised the meth as fun-size Snickers! Customs searched a suspicious passenger and found 45 “pieces” of meth that had been covered in chocolate, then placed inside Snickers wrappers.
3) Gotta hand it to him for creativity
These people smugglers thought it would be a genius idea to hide an actual man inside the car’s seat. It takes a certain level of desperation and courage to be sewn inside a leather car seat to cross the Mexico/U.S. border. Unfortunately for him, the border agents knew something was “off.”
4) “I have no idea what you’re talking about, officer.”
A passenger claimed they had no idea there were human remains inside the newly purchased flower pots they were bringing home through the Fort Lauderdale airport. The TSA ended up having to shut down the screening process because the area had turned into a crime scene.
5) Welp. You don’t see this every day.
You can’t make this stuff up, folks. A man named Yudishtir Maharaj stuffed seven pounds of cocaine inside frozen goat meat. Agents discovered the drugs when the meat went through x-ray. They drilled inside the frozen meat, and voila! White powder everywhere!
6) It seems like they’d all be crushed and ruined anyway?
Smugglers have literally thought of everything! These border security agents aren’t dummies, though. Putting illegal goods is an old trick and they know about it – so when they opened up these tires to find hundreds of packs of cigarettes? I’m sure they had a good chuckle.
7) They get an ‘A’ for effort
Officers in Houston found this creative smuggle technique. It was a gun hidden inside modeling clay, that was then hidden inside a computer. They thought the x-rays wouldn’t catch it but, sadly for them, they were mistaken.
8) That’s not very nice to do to Mr. Potato Head
Since frozen goat meat didn’t work, why not try Mr. Potato Head?! A California couple was arrested in 2014 for trying to smuggle one ounce of crack cocaine in the children’s toy. But maybe that’s because they got the idea from a man in 2007 that tried to smuggle 10 ecstacy pills inside Mr. Potato Head!
9) Maybe they’ve never seen a tiger before?
18-year-old Luis Eudoro Valencia tried to take a baby Bengal tiger from Mexico to the U.S. by keeping it in between his legs as he crossed the border. He tried telling the officers that it was a house cat but…you know…they’re not idiots. He went to jail for 6 months.
“When our officers spot a potential explosive on the X-ray monitor, they cannot just take the traveler’s word that the item is not real,” said the TSA on their
Instagram account. That’s after they found this passenger’s “fake bomb” in their luggage.
Customs agents noticed a man acting nervously with a large bulge underneath his t-shirt. Upon further inspection, they found that he was wearing a girdle that was stuffed with 18 endangered titi monkeys. He thought he made a good choice for the animals because they were previously in his suitcase and he thought the x-ray would harm them.
Apparently this woman
really loves her bologna. So much so, that she tried to smuggle around 230 pounds of the lunch meat from the U.S. into Mexico. I guess Mexico doesn’t know how to do bologna?
13) Okay, for real this time
Remember that fake bomb earlier? Yeah, the drawn-on clock kind of gave it away. But this person tried to bring a real bomb across the border. It was an old live mortar and can lead to seriously hefty fines by the TSA.
14) Seems super uncomfortable
Back in 2009, a man from Australia tried smuggling two pigeons across the border inside his pant leg. If that wasn’t bizarre enough, officers also found money belt with hidden plant seeds, bird eggs inside a multivitamin container and “undeclared samples of eggplant.” Alrighty then.
More and more smugglers are trying to replace car airbags with large bags of money. This is an attempt to sneak drug money over the borders undetected. However, two smugglers in Houston ended up crashing their car and getting killed because instead of the airbags deploying, it was full of “other things.”
“This crusty ol’ chap is actually a prop from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 movie,” said the TSA on their
Instagram. “His name is Nubbins, and he was brought through a checkpoint at the Atlanta International Airport, where as you can see, he was screened and sent on his jolly way.”
A biology teacher was caught with a severed seal’s head in his luggage back in 2004. He said that he found the dead seal on the beach and cut its head off to bring back for educational purposes. However, the law says otherwise: it is “illegal to disrupt or remove body parts from a dead mammal or to transport any illegal fish or wildlife product.”
18) Spay and neuter your pets, people!
Exotic puppies are often the victim of smugglers across the world. Sadly, many of them end up confiscated and have to be euthanized because they don’t have the proper vaccinations or already have some sort of disease or illness.
19) Zombie-killing device
A passenger brought this in their carry-on and it gave customs agents a bit of a scare. The barbed wire wrapped around this bat is actually rubber and thankfully, the blood is fake. However, prop items like this need to be stored in checked luggage, so this was confiscated.
Customs officials in Australia confiscated a stuffed Armadillo brought in from Texas. Australia has some very strict laws when it comes to importing wildlife – alive or not. It’s too bad because apparently this stuffed critter even came with a little cowboy hat and holster.
News sites reported that this Jeep tried to get into the U.S. from Mexico by creating a ramp…of sorts. Border Patrol said that the occupants got stuck halfway up and slid back down to Mexico. It was never reported what, if anything, was found inside the Jeep.
An enchilada revealed to contain an 8.5-inch knife at the Sonoma County Airport. But what’s even weirder, is that the woman who brought the enchilada said it must have fallen in while cooking and she was cleared for travel. Okie dokie.
Australian customs officials thought something was a bit odd when they heard a swishing sound and ‘flipping’ noises coming from the area near a woman’s waist. Upon inspection, they discovered a specially-designed apron that held 15 bags containing 51 tropical fish.
24) Just looking to save a few bucks
Many families in cities like San Diego or El Paso have family members that live just across the border in Tijuana or Juarez. Well, in Mexico, goods like food, tend to be a lot cheaper in Mexico so some families started “smuggling” pounds of food over the border to save money. Border agents have started to notice and crack down on this border-hopping grocery shopping.
25) Oddly acceptable…in checked baggage
“
A bullet-covered gas mask This fetching Mad Max-style face accessory was found in a carry-on bag in Miami. Aside from the mask being completely terrifying, replica bullets are banned in carry-ons,” says Newsweek.
Customs officials in Miami found a 3,000-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus shipped in a container from Spain. The person who imported the relic didn’t have any documentation whatsoever. After investigating, they discovered it had been stolen from Egypt over 125 years ago.
27) How stupid can you get?
Another way that smugglers and traffickers are trying to get over the border are by “tricking” the border agents by using none other than their own trucks! That should work, right?
CNN said that a fake emergency medical vehicle carrying “patients” tried to enter the U.S. to take them to “medical treatment.” Turns out it was a fake truck with illegal immigrants. They were all caught.
28) Stop with the fake explosives, shall we?
A suicide vest probably isn’t the best thing to try and bring through customs – even if it’s fake. But, apparently, some people are going to do it anyway! The vest was for a live-action role play and explosive experts had to come in to make sure it was fake.
29) And what is this for, exactly?
In 2012, a man tried to bring a gasoline-filled chainsaw on his carry-on at New York’s Elmira Corning Regional Airport. Surprisingly, he was still allowed to keep the chainsaw and board his flight – he just had to empty out the gasoline.
30) The stuff nightmares are made of
Customs officials at the Miami airport were shocked to discover a plastic bag filled with 22 slithering, slimy eels in a passenger’s checked luggage. They also found 163 tropical fish as well. Thankfully, the passenger surrendered them to U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
31) People are so strange
An odd discovery was made at the Southwest Florida International Airport when TSA agents found a meat slicer in someone’s carry-on luggage. There wasn’t any malicious intent but items like this need to be in checked baggage.
32) Just your average souvenir
“Our team at Juneau International Airport (JNU) recently dealt with “nuggets” of a different variety when examining a passenger’s carry-on bag. Upon inspection, a large organic mass turned out to be a bag of moose nuggets (or feces, droppings, excrements, etc.) that the passenger was taking home from their Alaskan adventure,” said the TSA’s
Instagram account. Apparently this isn’t illegal, but you should check with the airline beforehand about how to transport it.
Border security is constantly on the look-out for weapons disguised as everyday items. Take this iPhone case, for example. This one happened have a hidden throwing star right at easy reach. Although it’s a clever weapon, it’s a weapon nonetheless.
34) How did you even get that?
Somehow, someway, a passenger was caught trying to bring an avalanche charge onto a flight. These devices are used to help create avalanches and was found in a carry-on bag at the Anchorage airport in Alaska.
“A passenger traveling to Bangkok from Bangladesh was apprehended after security found seven freshwater crocodiles hidden in suitcases. The small crocs were only found after authorities received a tip,” said The Daily Meal.
Just because something is an antique, doesn’t mean it still doesn’t qualify as a weapon. A passenger tried to bring a WWII-era hand grenade onto the plane and was quickly arrested. Hand grenades aren’t allowed in either carry-ons or in checked luggage.
37) Airport security didn’t see this coming
Back in 2007, security agents at London’s Stansted Airport got quite the surprise when they discovered a jar of 10 human eyeballs in a passenger’s luggage.
The Daily Mail
reported that officials in South Korea seized thousands of pills that happened to be filled with human flesh. Why? We don’t know! But apparently, they say it enhances stamina. Yuck, yuck, yuck.
39) The things people collect
Airport officials in Detroit were scratching their heads when they discovered a large liquor bottle containing 5 dead endangered seahorses. It was confiscated – one, because it was more than the allowed of liquid. And two, well – the 5 dead endangered seahorses.
40) Not a sight for the weak
“18 human cadaver heads (not skulls, heads) were being transported for medical reasons. However, due to a mix-up with some paperwork, they were misplaced at Chicago O’Hare International Airport,” said The Daily Mail
said. Could you imagine being the person who found them?!
41) The TSA has some serious patience
At the Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina, officials found a live smoke grenade in a passenger’s luggage. Not only do this “bombs” create a thick blanket of smoke, but they can also become extremely hot and are considered hazardous material.
42) Some gardening while away?
A person wanted to bring their gardening hoe aboard their flight in New Jersey. And although these types of items are allowed in checked baggage, they aren’t allowed in carry-ons. And we just hope that that’s rust at the end of hoe.
43) Literal snakes on a plane
While scanning a passenger at the Miami International Airport, TSA discovered seven snakes stuffed into nylong stockings. Wear? Down the man’s pants. The man was in violation of the Lacey Act which prohibits trade in wildlife.
44) Sometimes you just want a homecooked meal
Tamales!!! U.S. Customs had to confiscate and destroy 400 delicious, homecooked tamales from a man coming from Mexico into the U.S. Sadly, he didn’t declare them upon entry and officials had to take them since they contained pork.
Another bizarre confiscation that was found by a K-9 sniffing dog, was a roasted pig head heading into the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta. Pork isn’t allowed to come into the country because it can spread diseases like mouth disease and swine fever.
People really want to smuggle meat apparently. They’ll even try to hide them inside puzzle boxes! However, the officials of the US Customs at the Dulles Airport are trained to look for anything and everything. They found it and seized it.
“A stick of nails This terrifying homemade device surely can’t have an innocent explanation. Somebody has wrapped a paint roller in sandpaper and wire, before pressing nails outwards into sharp spikes. It was found in a carry-on bag at Chicago O’Hare airport,”
says Newsweek. Yikes!
A package full of giant, live tarantulas was discovered and seized by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Exotic creatures like this are always a big red flag for anyone protecting our bodies. Especially venomous ones like tarantulas!
An interesting bladed claw was found by airport officials in Atlanta. And although the finger accessory/weapon is cool-looking, it’s most definitely not allowed on any flights.
50) It must be really delicious
You know a food has to be absolutely delicious if you’re willing to smuggle across international borders despite not being allowed to. One passenger at Pearson International Airport in Toronto really wanted to bring back sausage from their destination and tried to hide it in diapers. But, a sniffing dog, of course, sniffed it right out.
51) Also cool but not allowed
We understand that ancient or old weapons are cool collectors items to have. However, you really have to do your research before flying or crossing borders with it. It’s still a weapon! This jawbone tomahawk was confiscated in Salt Lake City.
52) Because transporting rodents makes sense
Bringing animals from one country to another, whether dead or alive, can be detrimental to a country’s ecosystem. Officials in Calgary found a container of dead cane rats that were trying to be smuggled into Canada from Africa. These animals would be devastating for them. They’re unsure why they were being smuggled dead.
53) Worst drug disguise ever
Probably one of the worst ideas ever caught by customs officials was when a passenger tried to bring a marijuana grinder that was disguised as a hand grenade in their luggage. There was marijuana still inside. It doesn’t get more stupid than this, folks!
54) The lengths people will go
A person first declared them as replica, but upon further inspection, officials discovered that this passenger was trying smuggle real hippo tusks into Edmonton International Airport. They were immediately confiscated.
55) The lengths people will go
Don’t bring weapons in your carry-on, people! Of any kind! “Nunchucks are prohibited from being transported in carry-on bags,”
says the TSA, “but may be packed in checked bags as long as they’re not illegal where you are traveling.”
56) Is that a new iPhone feature?
Canada’s Border Patrol was doing their jobs when they found this tricky little device. It’s an stun gun that has been disguised as an iPhone. A man was trying to get into Canada with 12 of them!
57) Explosives and planes do not mix
”When these items are found at a checkpoint or in checked baggage, they can cause significant delays because our explosives detection professionals must respond to resolve the alarm,” explains the TSA on Instagram. Let’s just not have any explosions whatsoever on the plane, shall we?
“A Canadian woman was arrested for attempting to smuggle 50 bags of marijuana into the United States by hiding it inside a foosball table. Miranda Ferron, 33, was taken into custody on Jan. 13, 2015 by US Border Patrol agents at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. The total 55 pounds of drugs are worth roughly $60,000,” explains NY Daily News.
59) That could not have been comfortable
In Los Angeles, a woman on her way to China was stopped by security for a pat down. When they did, they found two endangered birds wrapped in socks and strapped to her chest and leg. She was arrested on smuggling charges.
60) Oldest trick in the book
This wannabe smuggler thought he was being clever by putting marijuana inside salt and pepper shakers. He didn’t get very far with that not-so-smart disguise. It was seized by Customs and Border Protection.
61) They weren’t even trying to hide it
This person either thought they were being so obvious, it was smart or they thought that airport officials don’t do their jobs at all. Either way, they tried to bring these two carry-on suitcases with 17 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana.
We really, really can’t make this up, folks. A poor woman was used as a drug mule in a flight going from Bogota to Barcelona. It was discovered that her breast implants were stuffed not with saline – but with cocaine.
63) Can’t think of one logical explanation
Not exactly sure why someone would need an anti-tank weapon on a plane or anywhere for that matter. However, security agents still found one at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Pennsylvania.
64) Mmm black beans…oh wait.
This wasn’t the most creative or clever drug smuggling tactic in the world, but they said “what the heck? let’s try it!” These drug smugglers packed black bean cans full of cocaine and thought they would pull a fast one on Customs and Border Control.
Often times, smugglers like to disguise drugs and weapons and normal, ordinary items that people ship all the time. They hope that they’ll just scoot on by customs without a care. Wrong! Officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport found baby wipes, coffee, and cat litter that concealed guns, ammo, and marijuana.
66) What’s that book about?
Smugglers decided to hollow out a book and use the space to hide two adult and two baby Southern leaf tailed geckos. They were headed to the Czech Republic through the mail.
67) Taking advantage of the children
Another tactic that smugglers try and use is the one where they hide drugs or other illegal goods inside children’s toys. They think this will “throw off” the security officials. Well, it doesn’t work. This grenade was found inside a penguin backpack in Boston.
68) Far too many snakes being smuggled
I’d really love to know that there isn’t going to be any snakes on my flight. But smugglers keep smuggling them! Two 16-inch, live emerald green tree boas were seized in Australia after being mailed from Sweden.
At least the chapter of this book wasn’t disguising what it was about. However, concealing two 6.5″ knives in a hollowed out book wasn’t going to fly for the TSA.
70) That’s not how immigration works
A couple
tried to smuggle their own baby son into the United Arab Emirates in a carry-on bag. Of course, when the bag went through the x-ray, authorities were immediately alerted.
Can you believe all the things our border agents and airport officials have seen? It’s a crazy world out there! Which one surprised you the most?
