Kids these are days are pretty darn talented. Some even downright awe-inspiring.
Take 7-year-old Sophie Fatu, for instance. She’s well on the way to mastering her craft – singing.
There’re some powerful pipes behind those innocent, big blue eyes.
Sporting a flowery baby blue shirt and a subtle smile, Sophie ready’s herself for a big entrance. Her companion in red starts the piano accompaniment.
Sophie bursts open her cover of “Only Hope,” originally written by the band Switchfoot and later recorded by Mandy Moore for the film A Walk to Remember.
“There’s a song that’s inside of my soul
It’s the one that I’ve tried to write over and over again
I’m awaken in the infinite cold
But you sing to me over and over and over again”
She opens wide to hit a few super high notes. Her toothless mouth’s adorable, putting into perspective just how young she really is. Her voice is beyond her years.
By this point, she’s totally into the music, belting the chorus.
“So I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray
To be only yours
I know now
You’re my only hope”
Her big blue eyes stare right into the camera. Sophie stays the course, flexing her range.
“Sing to me the song of the stars
Of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again
When it feels like my dreams are so far
Sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again”
Her hands enter the frame, clasped together as if in prayer.
The lovely piano accompaniment keeps the pace.
“So I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray
To be only yours
I know now
You’re my only hope”
She literally lifts her hands, mirroring the lyrics.
Although Mandy Moore didn’t write the song, her version’s still incredibly popular.
“I give you my destiny
I’m giving you all of me
I want your symphony
Singing in all that I am
At the top of my lungs
I’m giving it all I have”
Sophie clasps her hands again before closing her eyes and flashing a toothless croon. Her voice transitions to a silky smooth falsetto.
She has some serious vocal range. Céline would be proud.
Sophie starts the final verse with a full head of steam. She holds nothing back.
“So I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray
To be only yours, I pray
To be only yours
I know now
You’re my only hope”
She wraps up her performance amid a smooth croon and some subtle slurring as the piano fades out. Sophie then waves to her viewers, letting out a small smile.
I’m smiling, too. She did a phenomenal job.
Those big eyes pepper in some more charm.
Apparently, Sophie has a new album out called Love Is…, as indicated in the YouTube description of her video performance. Wow, she’s incredibly successful for her age! Sophie’s a wizardly wunderkind. At this rate, she’ll be a singing star in no time!
With a voice like that, it’s easy to forget Sophie’s only seven. I wonder what she’ll sound like at age 15… or at 25… or 40. I hope to see her with some smash hits or another tightly written album in the near future.
Stay the course, Sophie. Céline Dion and Aretha Franklin would be proud.
