Who doesn’t love a delicious slice of cake? Of course, not all of us are professional bakers. But that won’t stop us from trying our hardest. After all, how difficult could it be?
As it turns out, pretty darn difficult. Those beautiful cakes you see on Pinterest were made by people who’ve practiced their craft for years. They’ve messed up over and over again until achieving perfection. Just like with music, the only way to get good at cake baking and decorating is “practice, practice, practice.”
As for the rest of us, we don’t have as much experience. When trying our hand at making a cake, we might be surprised to find out we have a talent for it. But more than likely, we’ll end up with a disaster on our hands.
Ultimately, the most important thing about cake is that it tastes good. We can forgive the ugliest creation if it tastes amazing. But you can bet we’ll still take pictures of those ugly cakes and laugh at them. And yeah, we might post them on the internet. But don’t worry, it’s all in good fun.
Here are 65 cakes that didn’t quite match up to the expectations.
1. The fail is so much cuter
Sure, some cakes are amazing works of art, but no one wants to bite into a realistic-looking cockroach. The second cake isn’t great, but at least it’s kind of adorable.
2. No, no, it looks great…really
A crepe cake is incredibly difficult since it uses dozens of thin layers separated by cream. This version is even more complex. But that second cake…it might just be the world’s most violent rainbow.
3. What the heck is that?
Sometimes, you look at a cake fail and you can see where the baker went wrong. And sometimes, you can see they were never right in the first place.
4. Part of your world?
The Little Mermaid is a popular Disney princess, so it’s not surprising to find her adorning birthday cakes for kids. But when you try to make a homemade version, don’t be surprised if it turns out…well, like this.
5. When your mirror cake isn’t very mirror-y
Mirror glaze cakes are beautiful but also extremely difficult to make. One baker tried to make a replica of this lovely cake and ended up with a sloppy mess.
6. Is he the cake or did he eat the cake?
Darth Maul is a great idea for a cake, but this version is looking a little bit chubby. It’s just barely good enough to be recognizable as Darth Maul. Just barely.
7. It’s not very treelike
There’s nothing like a fun Christmas cake, one decorated to serve as a gorgeous centerpiece. But while this baker had high hopes for their recreation, it didn’t exactly go to plan. I hope it tasted okay.
8. How much lava is too much?
Lava cake is chocolate flavored with a “molten” center. It’s supposed to ooze delicious chocolate sauce when you cut into it. But this lava cake skipped over “molten” and went straight to “scorched.”
9. I hope they didn’t pay for this
A couple put in an order for the first cake to be served at their wedding reception. The second cake was the one the bakery delivered. It’s a mystery how any professional bakery could sell that in good conscience.
10. Elsa’s cosmetic surgery didn’t go well
Queen Elsa is so popular that it’s not surprising to see her on top of birthday cakes. But those delicate features are hard to capture in fondant. It might be better not to try.
11. Those legs…
This Dolly Parton cake attempt is so hilariously bad, I don’t even know where to start. The smushed top layer, the unwrapped chocolate kisses, and those thick, square legs are just too much.
12. Batman or a bunny rabbit?
When you try to recreate Batman in fondant, pay close attention to how long his bat ears are. Otherwise, you might end up with Batman cosplaying as a bunny.
13. This looks like anything except a dragon
The second cake has almost no frosting, which I can only conclude means the dragon was skinned. Maybe it was already defeated by a knight. Or perhaps an amateur baked it. I think I’ll stick with the second option.
14. It’s the thought that counts
It’s sweet that Dad tried to make his son a Patrick Star birthday cake. It was just sweeter in the intention than in the execution. But hey, I’m sure it tasted delicious.
15. There was an attempt
It should be known that the cake on the right was made by a professional baker. That’s right, kids. An “expert” made that and then tried to sell it.
16. Spooderman, is that you?
Clearly, this baker didn’t double-check what Spiderman looks like before attempting to decorate this cake. The result looks like a low-budget dollar store version of your friendly neighborhood Spiderman.
17. I’m going to have nightmares
This is, without a doubt, the most horrifying reproduction of Minnie Mouse I’ve ever seen. I think it’s safe to say the poor kid won’t like that character anymore after this.
18. I can’t stop laughing
Who doesn’t love Chewbacca, the Wookie from the Star Wars saga who speaks in wails? We don’t love this cake version, which is more than a little nightmarish.
19. The glitter is a nice touch
Here’s yet another attempt at a Star Wars cake, this time of the friendly droid BB8. Remember, when your cake doesn’t turn out as planned, just toss a bunch of glitter on it.
20. Ariel’s gained a bit of weight
Not only that, but she also seems to have grown a couple of extra flippers. Is she swimming in radioactive waste down there Under the Sea? And what’s wrong with her hands?
21. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away
Star Wars figures are popular subjects for immortalizing in cake. Of course, some bakers do it better than others. Let your cakes cool before you frost them, dang it.
22. Looks delicious
This cinnamon pear cake looks like it belongs on “The Great British Bake-Off.” At least, the top version does. The bottom looks like it belongs in a trash can.
23. Is that a lamb or a cat?
Aw, what a cute little lamb. The original, that is. The reproduction looks less like a lamb and more like a traumatized cat covered in shredded coconut.
24. To be fair, caramel is tricky
In all fairness, caramel is an extremely difficult thing to cook. Ask any professional baker — they’ve definitely burned more than their fair share of caramel. But still…this cake.
25. What does the fox say?
I don’t even know where to start with this cake. It doesn’t look even remotely like a fox. Maybe the baker should find another hobby for a while. One they’re good at.
26. How beautiful
Trying to recreate a logo can be pretty difficult, as this amateur baker found out. Their Nilfgaard cake didn’t turn out quite as they expected. It’s not terrible for a first try.
27. So close yet so far
To be fair, this rainbow cake recreation doesn’t look terrible. It just looks a lot more like a messy paint rag than a rainbow palette. But hopefully, it was tasty all the same.
28. That’s…quite something
This guy’s girlfriend shelled out for a customized cake that looked like a White Claw…or at least, it was supposed to. She spent $100 and this is the cake that she got.
29. It literally brought tears
One woman ordered the cake on the left to celebrate her husband’s birthday. When she saw the delivered product — the cake on the right — she was so upset she burst into tears.
30. Uh…hopefully it tasted okay
What a beautiful layered berry cake — the one on the right, of course. The one on the left is enough to make a grown person cry…tears of laughter, that is.
31. Well, that’s special
The personified M&Ms are a little creepy at the best of times, but these ones are on another level. I can’t get past the eyebrows. Those eyebrows are something else.
32. It doesn’t seem to have legs
This Groot cake isn’t terrible, but it is missing a few vital parts. More than that, it’s also has an odd shapey. I guess they were going for a log shape rather than a real tree shape.
33. You okay, buddy?
This is a professionally-made cake. Let me repeat that. This is a professionally-made cake. I feel like I need to reach out and help that poor dinosaur out of the frosting.
34. This cake is a hurricane in more than one way
When you’re trying to make a hurricane cake, you only need a few colors of frosting. But you should probably make sure at least one of them is blue.
35. I hope it was a great wedding
This couple was going for a very particular aesthetic with their wedding cake, and the baker just didn’t get it. While the cake’s a disaster, hopefully, it didn’t ruin the day.
36. Wait, wait, wait
I don’t know which is worse: cake made to look like poop or cake trying to look like poop and failing. Both of them are terrible, but the one on the right is just sad.
37. A Care Bear of nightmares
One man had the sweet idea to try and replicate his wife’s childhood birthday cake. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out quite as expected. But hey, it’s the thought that counts.
38. Well, I don’t think they’ll want to watch Elmo again
Hey parents, I have a new idea for how to get your kids to stop being obsessed with a character you can’t stand. Just make them a horrifying birthday cake shaped like the character. They’ll hate it forever.
39. Bahahhaaha — wait, give me a second — BAHAHAHA
What a cute idea for a little girl’s birthday cake. But it didn’t turn out right at all. It didn’t even come anywhere close. Oh, my word, this is so bad it’s good.
40. The dashing groom isn’t so dashing
I can’t quite put my finger on why the second cake is so disturbing. I think it has something to do with the combination of chocolate brown and the glistening sheen on the frosting.
41. What the heck happened here?
There are ugly cakes and then there are cakes that are so bad, you wonder if the baker has ever even SEEN a cake. Who knows? Maybe they grew up somewhere where cake is illegal.
42. Well, that’ll be a topic of conversation
Every party needs a conversation piece like this Peppa Pig cake. And by golly, this birthday party has one. Unless, of course, the party guests believe in the mantra: “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”
43. The face of terror
This halfhearted owl cake isn’t as charming as the original. It looks absolutely terrified. To be fair, you’d look terrified if you were a cake, too.
44. That’s so much frosting
Too much frosting can quickly transform a cake from appetizing to stomach-turning. There’s just so much of it and it looks so gooey. No cake for me, thanks.
45. “Please help me”
A chicken cake is kind of a cute idea, especially if it’s nestled in a bed of spun sugar. But bhe second cake ditched the nest and opted for loads of dripping frosting instead.
46. No one wants to eat that
This mirror cake was supposed to be ethereally beautiful, with a glaze reminiscent of outer space. What they got was decidedly not that. I don’t even know what it is. I just know it’s not that.
47. Someone put that poor thing out of its misery
Have you ever seen a cake that looks like it’s begging to be killed? This little gopher could be cute, but it looks like it’s hanging on by a thread. Someone, help the poor thing.
48. Look, Morty, I’m a cake
Any fan of the TV show “Rick and Morty” will be familiar with the famous Pickle Rick episode. I can only imagine what Rick would have to say about this cake reproduction.
49. That shark needs a dentist
A shark cake is a fun idea, but this one makes you cringe. That poor shark needed braces long ago. It must hurt terribly every time he eats a surfer.
50. Is this Big Bird in cake form?
This cake should’ve been a yellow version of the cake on the left — gorgeous, flowery, and covered in macarons. Instead, they got this yellow oddity with dollops of frosting.
51. Poor Charlie
I sincerely hope that Charlie had a great birthday in spite of his disastrous cake. I also hope his parents refused to pay the bakery. That cake is a travesty.
52. This is horrifying
Everything about this Minnie Mouse cake is simultaneously horrifying and hysterical. The pink candies in her mouth are supposed to be a tongue, but they look just a wee bit like puke in my opinion.
53. I think this lamb is going to kill me
This lamb has the most murderous eyes I’ve ever seen on a human, animal, or cake. I hope someone else eats that piece because I’d be way too scared.
54. It’s got a problem
Okay, we’ll be nice and admit this elephant cake doesn’t look that bad. It just looks a little ragged, especially when you compare it to the original.
55. A heartfelt apology to David and Lynn
This cake would’ve been amazing if it had turned out as expected. Unfortunately, it was awful. The good things are that the bakery didn’t charge for it and it was still tasty.
56. A little wonky but still cute
As far as homemade cakes go, this one isn’t half bad. Sure, the person who decorated it doesn’t have a super steady hand, but that’s okay. It’s a solid first attempt.
57. He’s melting
Is it just me, or does Stitch look like he’s been experimenting with hard drugs? It’s always a shame with young Hollywood stars go astray.
58. Tony Stark would approve
In truth, Tony Stark would probably have something sassy to say. Iron Man isn’t known for being diplomatic so you know he’d have a zinger on the subject of this cake.
59. It’s kind of crooked
Sure, the second cake looks like it was dropped in a mud puddle, but it’s the thought that counts. After all, you can never go wrong with chocolate and raspberries.
60. Excuse me while I laugh until I cry
It might not be a full cake, but it’s a cake pop, which is nothing more than a tiny cake. Panda pops are an adorable idea, but the execution is just legendary. Legendarily bad, that is.
61. Quick, eat him so he can die
This poor turkey looks horrified to be on the Thanksgiving table. Why on earth did they make the body so much bigger than the tail?
62. The space-time vortex wasn’t kind
Who doesn’t love a cake made in honor of their favorite fandom? Unless, of course, it looks like this. Even the Doctor wouldn’t be able to salvage this cake.
63. Well, now I’m uncomfortable
I’m trying to figure out what’s so bizarre about the second cake. I think it’s a combination of the tongue and the hooded eyes. And…well, so many other things.
64. I think they’re dead
Who wouldn’t want to eat a bunch of pigs swimming in the mud? Or in this case, a bunch of disembodied pigs that may have been dumped in a pen?
65. Well, that’s upsetting
This gets worse the longer you look at it. The crossed eyes, the strange color, and the lack of fur. Every part of it is worse than the last.
