600 music educators gathered at the TEMPO Manitoba Music Conference and created a beautiful masterpiece.
They sang an unrehearsed 375-part harmony version of the song Amazing Grace.
This spectacle is what many believe happens when you put that many people together who “speak the language of music.”
What is the TEMPO Manitoba Music Conference?
The TEMPO Manitoba Music Conference is a highly anticipated event that happens annually for music educators.
Each year, teachers come together to learn from keynote speakers to bring fresh ideas back to their schools.
These educators separate into various groups to focus on their specialty.
These include Band, Choral, Jazz, Elementary/Orff, Guitar/Strings, and Perspectives.

It provides a space for teachers to come together, share ideas, and collaborate on ways to serve their students better.
The prompt that created the beautiful melody.
During this particular conference, a keynote speaker showed the power of “speaking the language of music” when he prompted the crowd of 600 music educators to sing Amazing Grace by only giving them the starting notes.
Five seconds into the singing, he yells out to have them add some harmony.
Just moments later, you can hear multiple different harmonies being added in creating their beautiful and harmonious version of Amazing Grace.

The teachers attending this conference have a lot of passion for their students.
Each year’s conference is always a resounding success, but the singing of Amazing Grace at this event was one of the many highlights.
The love for music and the commitment these educators have to their students are truly inspiring, and it is clear that they are determined to provide the best possible education to every student that will sit in front of them over the years.
Even when the pandemic hit, the committee of the music conference did everything they could to make this conference virtual so that the education could continue no matter what.
It is the perseverance and determination of many that allowed these conferences to be so successful even in the virtual world.
It is with high hopes that in 2023 that these educators will be able to return to the conference in person.
