Our brains interpret what our eyes see.
Notice I said interpret? Because sometimes—especially when we’re looking at something out of context—our brain just provides us with the most sensible suggestion. It tells us this equals that, when this isn’t that at all.
Here are 50 remarkable instances where my—and likely yours too—brain confused this and that.

1. The wonders of space.
I’ve always found space to be fascinating. Planets and stars against a deep black background. Oh wait. Those aren’t planets. That’s the bottoms of old frying pans.

11. The deep blue sea.
Until you notice that there is little chance of water being above the tree line, those do appear to be waves, don’t they? However, what you’re really looking at is dense fog.

This really does look like a deep space nebula, doesn’t it? As though someone on the Starship Enterprise took a picture and sent it back to earth. What this really is though is a fireworks display.

I used to watch my mother cross stitch and marveled at her patience with it. This looks like someone took the time to create a keepsake of their cats. Except it’s just two cats in their carrier.

These posts are casting no shadows. If you know anything about digital rendering, it appears as though the creator of this image didn’t know what they were doing. However, what you’re looking at is a photo taken at noon, when the sun is directly overhead.
