There are certainly some things to love about winter. Making snowmen can be fun and it always feels nice to get cozy somewhere warm with a cup of hot cocoa and a roaring fire while the outside world is covered with frost and ice, but let’s be honest, it’s really not the best season!
From chapped lips and runny noses to high heating bills and always having to wrap up in lots of clothes every single time you want to step outside, winter is filled with annoying little irritations that all build up and make the season a frustrating one to endure.
1) Frosted Windscreens
This has to be one of the worst things about winter! You step outside and take a look at your car, only to see that the whole windscreen is frosted over. You then have to spend ages either scraping all that ice off or waiting for the car’s heating system to melt it away!
2) Wearing Tights
The cold weather means that tights become a necessity for many women, but trying to find a pair without a ladder or a hole in can be so difficult, and it’s even harder to wear a pair all day long without feeling uncomfortable.
3) Icy Sidewalks
We’ve all been there. You’re walking carefully and cautiously along an icy sidewalk, trying to tiptoe along and navigate around the slippiest spots, but no matter how hard you try, you still end up slipping!
If you’re lucky, you simply flail your arms around like an inflatable tube man and regain your balance quite quickly. If you’re unlucky, you fall over completely, landing right on your butt and then start slipping again as you try to get back up!
4) Runny Noses Ruining Makeup
A runny nose is bad enough, but imagine spending an hour working on a flawless makeup look and then ruining it all by having to wipe your snotty nostrils.
5) No More Sunshine
There’s a reason so many people love the summer. It’s because we love the sun! It’s wonderful to see the sun up in the sky, shining down on us and brightening up our days. In winter, the constant clouds make us all forget what the sun even looks like.
6) Dry Skin
Will the flakes ever end!? In the winter, it can feel like your skin is as dry as the dessert and you just can’t stop peeling.
7) Frosty Hands
Another common complaint in winter is cold hands. Even indoors, while the heating is slowly trying to fire up, your fingers can feel numb, making it so much more difficult to type out texts or browse the internet.
8) Chapped Lips
Many people also suffer from chapped and dry lips through the cold winter months. And if you forget your lip balm, you can start to look like a monster with all that dry flakiness.
9) Super Slow Laundry
If you aren’t lucky enough to have a dryer at home, doing laundry in winter is a real chore! You can’t hang it up outside, so you have to put it on racks indoors and then sit and wait, sometimes several days, for the last bits of moisture to finally fade away.
10) Lipstick Is Impossible
Because of the dry lips we mentioned earlier, wearing most kinds of lipstick suddenly becomes an impossible mission that even Tom Cruise couldn’t handle.
11) Bills, Bills, Bills
Of course, another issue of winter we all have to deal with (unless you live in Florida) is higher heating bills! With the cold weather outside, house heating systems have to work overtime, resulting in way bigger numbers on your bills than you’re used to.
12) Chilly Nipples
It might be embarrassing, but it’s basic science: when the weather gets cold, your nipples get hard. Then they rub against your bra or your shirt and cause all kinds of uncomfortable situations in more ways than one.
13) Trying To Drive
Driving is always a risk. You never really know what’s going to happen out on the road, but ice and snow just makes it so much more dangerous! It can feel like you’re loading into a video game or action blockbuster when you strap yourself into your car and set off along an icy road.
14) Flaky Feet
Dry skin in winter even extends all the way down to your toes! It can feel so uncomfortable to pull on a pair of socks or tights all over those crusty heels and flaky soles.
15) Having To Get Out Of Bed In A Cold House
This is one of the worst! It’s never fun to wake up in your warm, cozy, toasty bed and have to peel back the covers and step out into a cold house because the heating hasn’t properly started working yet.
16) Spending A Fortune On Hand Cream
With so much dry skin to deal with, it’s only logical that you end up spending mad amounts of money on lotions and potions to moisturize your pores and revitalize your dried out skin.
17) Taking A Shower
Taking a shower is supposed to be comforting and relaxing. It’s something that many people enjoy throughout the year, a way to de-stress and forget about their worries. But in winter, showers become very different! Taking a shower in a cold house is never ever fun and you have to rush through it as quickly as possible and get dressed super fast to try and stay warm.
18) Hat Hair
Yes, it’s a ‘first world problem’, but it’s still a problem! You think you look super cute in your nice winter hat, but as soon as you get inside and take it off, you have to cope with the dreaded hat hair!
19) Short Days
There have actually been studies to show that shorter days can make people feel sadder in general, so if you feel this way in winter, you can at least take some comfort in knowing you’re not the only one. Shorter and darker days in winter can make life feel a lot emptier.
20) Every Outfit Is Ruined
You’ve got a hot date planned or a big night out with your friends and set out the perfect outfit to look the part. But then it all gets covered up by your massive coat, hat, scarf, and gloves.
21) Wet Feet!
One of the fun things about winter is taking a walk in the snow, but even that comes with a whole bunch of extra problems as your feet often get soaked and cold.
22) Static Hair
Don’t even try to control your hair in winter. You just have to accept that it’s going to do its own thing all season long! In the cold temperatures, it’ll start to dry out, but as soon as you get indoors with all the heating, it’ll go all frizzy and static.
23) Cold Beds
A bed is supposed to be warm and inviting. That’s the whole purpose of a bed! It’s the toasty, cozy place you can go at the end of the day to feel totally happy and relaxed. In winter, even our beds betray us! The sheets feel frosty on our skin and we can spend several minutes shivering before it finally starts to warm up a little.
24) Spending Hours Moisturizing
You wake up, it’s time to moisturize. You finish your shower, it’s time to moisturize. You make it across the driveway to your car, it’s time to moisturize! It feels like you spend half of every single winter day moisturizing your body to avoid dry skin from the frosty temperatures.
25) Constant Christmas Music
Okay, a little Christmas music is absolutely fine. There are some classic Christmas tunes out there and we can all enjoy a little bit of White Christmas and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town now and then. But when you’re hearing Mariah Carey singing All I Want For Christmas Is You for the 500th time while getting your groceries, it starts to get just a little annoying.
26) Getting Sweaty In Hot Clothes
Winter is a great time to bust out all your favorite sweaters and hoodies to brave the frosty world, but then you get somewhere with powerful heating and remember you can’t take your sweater off because you aren’t wearing anything underneath. So you sit and you sweat.
27) Broken Umbrellas
As well as the rain, frost, and snow, winter is often very windy too. So even if you try to use an umbrella when heading outside, the weather can ruin your day in more ways than one by blowing the thing inside out.
28) Clothes Shopping Becomes Impossible
Shopping for clothes in winter might seem fun at first, especially with all those awesome sales, but then you remember that you have to remove 17 layers of clothes just to try one thing on and it suddenly becomes way less fun.
29) Grumpy People
Ever noticed that people just seem to be a little more grumpy in winter? Especially when Christmas is over and we’ve all got nothing but cold weather to deal with for a couple more months, it seems much harder to find a friendly stranger out there.
30) Always Having To Dry Your Hair
Don’t even think about stepping outside with wet hair in winter! It’ll stay wet all day long and you’ll probably get ill as well.
31) Constant Colds
Definitely one of the worst things about winter is getting a cold. But not just one cold! Oh no. That’s not enough. Even when you recover from your first winter cold, you can be sure you’ll get another one just a couple of weeks later. It’s like the whole season has to be filled with runny noses and sore throats.
32) Stinky Feet
We spoke about cold, wet feet earlier on, but there’s another foot-related issue to think about in winter too. Since you tend to wear big thick socks and boots, your feet can start to become a little smellier than usual. This can be super awkward when you stop off to visit your friends.
33) Contrasting Temperatures
Going shopping in winter can be a really tricky challenge. You put on your coat, scarf, gloves, and everything else to brave the frosty weather, but as soon as you step inside a store, the heating is cranked up so high you start to sweat!
34) Ruining Your Sleeves
Let’s be real here: when you have a runny nose and can’t quite find a tissue at that exact moment, what do you do? You use your sleeve, of course. We try to be polite about it, gently dabbing our noses to try and stem the flow of snot before finding a tissue, but we just end up looking like big kids and ruining our clothes.
35) Gaining Weight
Winter is the one time of year when people tend to gain the most weight. All the fancy food for Christmas helps with this, but there’s also the fact that the winter weather and short days make it harder to get outdoors and exercise regularly.
36) The Constant Fear Of Flashing
If you happen to wear a skirt in winter under your big coat, you’ll know all about the way it can slowly ride up your legs due to the friction from the coat, leaving you constantly worrying about accidentally flashing your underwear while sitting on the bus or riding the train.
37) A Lack Of Fresh Air
It’s too cold to take a walk. It’s too cold to go outside. It’s too cold to even open the windows! We can start to feel trapped in our own homes in winter and really don’t get enough fresh air.
38) Dandruff
There’s only one type of snow we want in winter, and it isn’t the little white flakes on the top of your scalp! Unfortunately, due to the cold weather, many people can have to deal with dandruff at this time of year.
39) Cabin Fever
Staying cooped up indoors isn’t good for anyone, and the longer you go without going outside, the more frustrated you can be. It’s not uncommon for people to start struggling with cabin fever from being stuck inside all through the season.
40) Trying To Wash Tights
Having to wear tights in winter means having to wash tights in winter too, and that can be a real challenge! First, it’s easy to lose track of when you’re supposed to wash them. Second, when you do take time to wash them, they always come out of the machine all tangled up like tentacles.
41) Having To Shovel Snow
Having to shovel snow out of your driveway just isn’t fun. It isn’t. There’s no way you can make it fun and there’s no way it will ever be fun. It’s just a chore. A cold, uncomfortable, difficult chore.
42) Running Out Of Options
You’ve tried ever single moisturizing cream, lotion, potion, and serum around, but your skin still seems to dry out no matter what you do!
43) Hot Drinks Go Cold Quickly
Usually, at other times of the year, you can pour yourself a nice cup of coffee or soothing mug of tea and know that it will stay warm long enough for you to savor each sip. In winter, you have to gulp it down in seconds before it goes cold!
44) Spending On Supplements And Forgetting All About Them
With a lack of sunlight and exercise in winter, supplements and vitamins can be essential for our overall health, but remembering to take them can be quite a challenge when you have so many other things to think about.
45) Walking The Dog
Even something that is usually fun, like taking the dog for a walk, can feel way worse in winter and take twice as long since you have to prepare yourself with all your warm clothing and make sure your furry friend is comfortable too.
46) Super Cold Toilet Seats
Definitely one of the most irritating things about winter is how cold the toilet seat can get! You really feel it on that first toilet visit in the morning, just after waking up.
47) Trying To Use A Phone With Gloves
Luckily, they now make gloves with special smartphone friendly materials that make this a little easier, but trying to tap on a touchscreen while wearing regular gloves is almost impossible. But you don’t want to take them off, because then your fingers get too frosty to move! What a dilemma.
48) Needing To Pee
We already covered the frosty seat, but there’s another toilet-related issue to think of in winter too! Every time you want to use a public restroom while out and about, you have to take off all your huge coat and gloves. It can sometimes feel like so much hassle, you’d rather hold it and wait to get home instead.
49) Endless Conversations About Weather
Have you ever noticed how people tend to talk even more about the weather in winter? You hear the same old phrases again and again and it really becomes very boring, very quickly.
50) Losing Your Scarf
For some reason, scarves are so easy to lose! We take them off when going inside, set them down on a table or chair, and then leave them behind when we go. This happens all the time, with bars and restaurants filling up their ‘lost property’ boxes with dozens of scarves every winter.
51) Public Transport Delays
When the roads get icy and the snow starts to fall, public transport can start to suffer, with buses and trains being delayed. This just puts everyone in an even worse mood!
52) Gloves Snagging On Your Nails
It always feel so uncomfortable when you go to take off your gloves and feel them snagging on one of your nails. The same thing can happen with sweaters and scarves too. And it’s never nice!
53) Having To Put On Extra Layers To Do Anything
Even if you just want to take the trash out or grab the mail from the mailbox at the end of your driveway, you can’t just step outside like normal. You have to put on a big warm coat and lots of layers to avoid freezing out there.
54) Putting On A Cold Bra
Ouch! There are few things in this world of ours more uncomfortable than having to put on a cold bra when you’re already feeling frosty.
55) Traffic
It’s only natural that people try to drive more slowly and carefully in icy conditions, but this also causes way more traffic and can double the time you need just to get to work or get home at the end of the day.
56) Unruly Socks
You know the feeling. You’re out and about, trying to make the most of your day despite the frosty weather. You wore long socks to keep your feet warm inside your boots, but slowly and surely, they’re rolling down, lower and lower.
57) Frosty Ears
Is there anything worse than cold ears? Well, yes, there are plenty of worse things, but cold ears are still pretty bad! Even with a good scarf, thick coat, and cozy clothes, your ears can still often suffer the sting of the winter weather.
58) Wasting So Much Time On Accessories
You have to go back into the coffee shop to grab the scarf you nearly left behind. You have to spend 10 more minutes before leaving the house because you lost your other glove. You have to visit the restroom as soon as you get to work to fix your hair after removing your hat! It feels like we waste so much of our lives all because of winter accessories.
59) Busy Shops
When it’s cold, people don’t want to be cooped up in their houses, but they can’t really do too much outdoors either, so they tend to go shopping. Everyone else has the same idea, so the shops end up being so busy it’s almost unbearable!
60) Watery Eyes
Our eyes don’t really like the cold, especially if they’re not used to it, so they tend to drip and drip every time we step outside. How annoying!
Winter sure does come with a whole lot of problems. Okay, we get to enjoy Christmas and New Year, so it’s not all bad, but the majority of the season is just filled with runny noses, frosty ears, uncomfortable toilet situations, and lots of unnecessary hassle.
What do you think? Are you a winter lover in spite of all its problems or can you not wait for this season to be over so we can start enjoying the loveliness of spring? Be sure to share the list around and find out what your friends and family think about these common winter issues.
