Some kids blend in their whole lives, but others really try to express themselves with the way they look – and those attempts make for the best nostalgia photos.
We should all be proud of the lengths we went to in order to find our own style or be “cool” in our own way.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with learning to laugh at your former self either. Especially when you look back and wonder what the heck you were thinking.
These 30 brave souls shared their most hilariously embarrassing pics with the world. So have a look – and a laugh.
1. Spectacular school photo
But let’s not overlook the ensemble – particularly the homemade kitten and puppy vest. It doesn’t even match the turtleneck.
Then again, you might have been too distracted by the massive hair bow to notice.
2. It’s just a phase
And while it looks like he went straightforward heartthrob for two years, that can get tiring.
So we’re glad to see he ended on a hardcore note.
3. A true original
Jealous!
Then again, the eyeshadow *might* be part of the problem here.
4. Gaggle of geeks
At least he found a friend who was willing to join in with the hat swagger.
5. What child is this?
But we love this couple for going goth and giving their kiddo his own sense of style.
Let him decide for himself what color his hair should be when he’s old enough.
6. The whole package
But our two main questions are: “What’s with the “smiley” face?” and “Is that a perm?!”
Pretty epic.
7. A child of the 80s
Dance class was pretty much a thing for everyone – and no one was judging our baby fat sticking around for a few extra years.
Spandex and sequins were de rigueur and side ponytails were an art form.
Those were the days!
8. Reach for the stars – with your hair
That’s not a hairstyle we saw very often back in the day, but look at how perfect it is!
And the juxtaposition with the formal dress is just awesome.
9. Swagger time
Before social media, we really just had movies and magazines to go by for our style inspo.
We also threw around the word “pimp” as a synonym for “cool” – and some of us took it a bit too far.
In honor of my husband’s 37th birthday, I present to you his Senior Prom photo from 2000 from r/blunderyears
10. Punk and plow
“When you have to plow the fields at 5 but the My Chemical Romance concert is at 6.”
That sums it up perfectly.
11. I totally have a girlfriend. Her name is Zelda
The only problem we see here is thinking that a soul patch looks good.
Everything else is so dorky that it’s almost cool. Almost.
“You’ll regret this senior picture” said my mom’s boyfriend. Turns out, he was wrong. from r/blunderyears
12. Razor regrets
And we just want to know how long it took this young lady to have full brows again after going at them with a razor.
Don’t get us wrong, we’ve seen worse. In fact, we’re pretty impressed that she managed to keep some shape to them!
13. A reason to smile
We all have our dorky sides, but this kid’s is on full, glorious display.
Then again, if the Pokemon background is an option, we’re guessing he’s not the only one with a childhood photo like this.
14. Rage against the machine
We’re not sure what point he’s making, but we applaud the willingness to look unique and still do his chores like a good son.
My mom found a couple photos while cleaning today. Junior year, 2002, rural Midwest. from r/blunderyears
15. Karen: The Early Years
Looking back on these now, we’re almost glad our parents never gave in.
16. Going goth
This kid went at it with 100% commitment, which we can only respect.
Go full goth or go home.
17. Super senior photo
Then again, she’s making one heck of a commitment to the look – right down to the hairy Hobbit feet!
We love that she has no regrets – and that her parents let her go for it with just a minor warning.
Mom: “You’re going to regret this when you’re older.” Me: “Hold my Sting.” Senior pictures, summer of ‘04. from r/blunderyears
18. Pump up the volume
We’d love to know what these epic 90s parents look like now!
19. On a mission
Normally we’d say the teddy bear sweatshirt would have given it away, but there were a lot of questionable sweatshirts in the 80s – and even more questionable hairstyles.
20. Beyond her years
We’re pretty sure this kid could have bought booze without an ID at the time this was taken!
Also, check out the bunny buttons on that cardigan!
School photo looking like 60-year old librarian with my cardigan, turtleneck and thick glasses Date and age unknown. from r/blunderyears
21. Class act
It’s amazing what can happen when you let kids dress up.
22. Magical
But we applaud the effort and the confidence it takes to pull this off with such gusto!
Prom 2009, I was a sophmore in High School and I took school dances a litte too seriously. Also I didn’t have a date. from r/blunderyears
23. The original gangster
Now, when gangsters hang out in the park, it’s a whole different aesthetic.
In my mid-late teens I watched too many old gangster movies went though a suit, vest, tie, fedora…. and ponytail. from r/blunderyears
24. Dreaded dance photos
It was always so fun to wear a costume and get your makeup done. But for some reason, when we look back on those photos later, they’re usually really embarrassing.
This is how you dress when you’re 12 and tap dancing to Sk8r Boi at your recital. from r/blunderyears
25. Kids being kids
This girl was probably thrilled to have these things back in the day.
Today, maybe not so much.
26. Bangs
We can’t help but applaud this girl for realizing they weren’t doing her any favors at the moment.
The problem is the way she tried to go about getting rid of them.
I was 10 when I realized people with no bangs had grown them out, not cut them off. from r/blunderyears
27. Band of brothers
Then you know it wasn’t just you with the problem.
You’ve really gotta blame the parents for this one.
28. Smile!
Eyes closed? Too bad. Ridiculous look on your face? Deal with it.
A good school photo was more about luck than anything else.
29. Lasers
Remember the laser background? We had to BEG our mom to let us have it.
It seemed so futuristic back in the day.
In this case, it’s really a tie between the background and the mullet for “most embarrassing part of the photo.”
30. It runs in the family
We just wonder if they had some others taken too. Is this all they have to remember the year by?
The good news is that if you have an embarrassing photo from the past, it might mean your awkward days are behind you!
