6-year-old Kamryn Smith really knows how to dance. In fact, after her recent performance at KAR, the crowd went completely wild. Her routine won her first place in the jazz dance category at the competition — an extremely impressive accomplishment. She is basically a little Beyonce.
For those who don’t know the Kids Artistic Revue, or KAR for short, is one of the most important dance competitions in the country.
Throughout the year, KAR visits dozens of locations around the US to hold regional competitions. The winners from the local events are then invited to perform at nationals where the kids have an opportunity to compete for some big prizes like cruises and cars.
“Our beautiful stages will be shared by thousands of performers who will all have their moment to shine in a positive, rewarding, and exhilarating setting,” the KAR website reads.
Simply put, in the world of kids dance, KAR is a big deal. They even advertise themselves as “America’s favorite dance competition”.
So when Kamryn Smith stepped to the stage at nationals this year, all eyes were on her.
Just the fact that she was invited to nationals already meant she was among the best dancers in the nation for her age bracket. Still, no one ever could have predicted how good her routine would be.
She chose to dance to the song “Grown Woman” by Beyonce.
From the moment the music started, no one in the crowd could take their eyes off of her. Dressed in a colorful sequin skirt and top, she certainly looked the part. Her outfit was reminiscent of something we might see at a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas.
For a solid two minutes, the young starlet flipped and spun her way around the stage, the crowd cheering in the background the entire time.
We can’t imagine the number of hours she spent practicing with her teachers at the Soul Shock Dance Company in Phoenix, however, we’re sure the answer is hundreds, if not thousands. When you are 6 years old that is a pretty big percentage of your life.
She definitely met the KAR competition’s objectives.
“We are proud to recognize teachers, choreographers, and parents for their hard work and commitment to assist young dancers achieve their goals. KAR values achievements and is honored to be a positive outlet where dedication, talent, and accomplishments are proudly celebrated,” the website says.
Our favorite part of Kamryn’s performance though was the gymnastics-inspired moves.
It’s not something you would typically see in a jazz routine, but by the end, Kamryn was doing perfect cart-wheels left and right all over the place.
Choreographers Antoine Olds & Ambur Towns got really creative when planning out the routine. They deserve a lot of credit. However, there is no denying how talented Kamryn is either. There are not many 6-year-olds who would be able to execute a routine like that so flawlessly, but Kamryn made it look effortless.
If she keeps up the hard work, there is no telling how far her career will take her. We would not be surprised at all if we hear about her winning even more competitions in the future. The sky is the limit for young Kamryn and we wish her the best as she continues honing in her dance skills.
