Pregnancy is a beautiful and extraordinary experience, but when complications arise during this time, it can be a daunting and stressful experience for everyone involved. For twenty-three-year-old Jaime Jenkins and her partner, Jakob, problems began to arise around the 12th week of their pregnancy with their first child.
The doctors told the parents that there was a possibility their child would not make it, and as they got closer to the date of their child’s arrival, they found out that their daughter’s lungs were not yet fully formed. While the doctors suggested she terminate the pregnancy because the baby would have a small chance survival, she decided to push forward and ignore the doctor’s advice.
“I could feel her kicking and we’d already named her. There was no way I couldn’t give her a chance at life,” she later explained about her decision.
When it came time for her daughter to be born, they again faced some complications, and doctors were unsure if she would be able to make it through. By some miracle, the girl, named Helena, began to get stronger.
The doctors initially weren’t sure exactly what was wrong, but they soon diagnosed her with diastrophic dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism. While her parents are both over six feet tall, Jamie and Jakob both found out that they are both carriers of a dwarfism gene.
Helena herself has been fighting for her life and winning multiple times in her still-young life. With multiple surgeries and hospital visits behind her, as well as her parents learning how to handle all of this along the way, she’s a courageous and powerful soul who’s proven that nothing is impossible.
Jamie and Jakob lovingly call their daughter Thumbelina and often dress her up in various princess dresses, which she absolutely loves. “Helena has already amazed us in so many ways. She’s a real little miracle and I hope our story helps other parents who are facing the same situation,” said Jaime.

Their daughter still has multiple visits to the hospital up ahead, and we hope that all goes well for Helena as she transitions into a toddler and then a child! She’s a strong reminder that every child is a true angel on earth.
