Did you know that until the late 19th century, the sport of synchronized swimming only involved men? Even so, they weren’t allowed to participate in the World Aquatics Championships or the Olympics. It was women who dominated the sport. For eight years, from 1984 through 1992, females featured both solo and duet competitions at the Summer Olympics.

That was dropped in 1996. Instead, the Olympic Games only permitted team competition. It wasn’t until 2015 when FINA finally allowed mixed competitions, meaning males and females could perform together. Today, you’ll find some impressive male-only synchronized swimming teams. But what happens when five male “swimmers” decide to take their skill to the stage?

Let’s find out.

This is a new take on synchronized swimming

It started when the faculty of Oak Grove Lutheran School decided to highlight their male-only synchronized swimming team. Keep in mind, they don’t have a team. Instead, some of the staff would pretend in the form of a skit. While everyone expected something special, they had no idea just how hysterical these guys would be.

Let the show begin

After a proper introduction, the camera pans to the right to reveal the “swimming pool.” You can hear people in the audience already laughing, followed by applause and cheers. As opera music starts to play, the “swimmers” walk on stage in a single file. They’re all dressed in knee-length swim trunks, white tee shirts, and of course, swim caps.

They have to warm up first.

You can’t give a skilled performance without first warming up…that’s what this team did. Each of them stretched their legs and arms using the funniest gestures. The crowd’s cracking up. The five men then take their place in the “water.” They start the performance by making beautifully synchronized arm movements…it’s flawless.

Now the fun really begins.

They take turns driving into the water with complete precision. They really have the audience going now. What’s so great is the expression on the men’s faces. You can tell they’re taking their “synchronized swimming” very seriously. They pop up out of the water. The next thing you know, they’re head down with their legs in the air.

This male-only team is in a league of their own.

It’s obvious these guys are having a blast. Even better, they’re keeping the audience in stitches. They do all kinds of hysterical moves like the backstroke, rowing a boat, and even juggling. Throughout the entire five-minute video, people can’t stop laughing. These men are putting on a fantastic show.

As you might’ve expected, this video went viral

Filmed in 2013 as nothing more than a funny school skit, once the video was uploaded on social media, it quickly went viral. Since first posting it in December of 2013, it’s had almost 1.1 million views.
