These 5 dancers took the stage looking cool as can be in their all black attire, taking inspiration from the Men in Black movie series.
I think we can all remember a young Will Smith and grumpy Tommy Lee Jones in the hit late 90s films, running around with their aliens and memory erasers.
Well, most of us can. Maybe not these young dancers who wouldn’t have even been born yet. But they’ve certainly nailed the aesthetic in any case!
Isabella Rivera, Dyllan Blackburn, Madi Beerer, Gracyn French and Laci Stoico are performing a dance routine to a rendition of Men in Black from, you guessed it, the Men in Black Soundtrack.
Originally sung and rapped by none other than one of our national treasures: Will Smith. Never, ever forget this iconic music video.
The girls are performing at the 24 Seven Dance Convention in Anaheim, California, where people have come from all over the world to attend specialty workshops and competitions.
They start their jazz routine with their backs to the audience, hair pulled back into slick ponytails, waiting totally still as the music starts to build. Forget Men in Black, these are the Girls in Black, and they are about to slay this routine.
Slowly, they lean their heads all the way back, Matrix style, revealing some iconic black sunglasses.
The talented girls dance perfectly in sync together. You can tell they’ve practiced long and hard, and have a lot of discipline to crush a routine like this one.
It’s a big stage where they’ll be watched and judged by hundreds of other talented dancers. It’s a lot of pressure!
They pull off some incredibly flexible moves. The girl in the middle is basically a pretzel for one section of the routine. And look how high those legs are kicked!
Most of us can only dream.
I don’t know how they keep those glasses on with all their complex moves. They’re literally doing kart wheels for some of it!
It must be either a lot of hair spray, some face glue, or magic. Maybe a combination of the three.
Usually, we see jazz dancers wearing specialty shoes, in black or sometimes a nude colour. Unusually, the girls here are not wearing any shoes – they’re dancing barefoot!
This may seem unlikely for a jazz routine, usually we see barefoot dancers for contemporary styles, but a lot of experts believe it’s better for young dancers to be barefoot.
The routine was choreographed by 27 year old Molly Long, who is well known in the world of young dancer education.
She’s incredibly talented has even choreographed some routines on the popular show, Dance Moms! Now she’s sharing her gift with aspiring young dancers and helping them build successful careers in entertainment.
Molly is a co-founder of Project 21 Dance Studio and a jazz instructor at Yorba Linda Academy of Ballet, both in California.
The girls in this video are students from the Yorba Linda Academy, which is quite prestigious and has limited registration every year.
Based on the talent we’ve seen in the video, and with the guidance of Molly Long, we can be sure these girls have promising careers ahead.
What incredible talent!
