The world is an extraordinary place, and incredible things are happening each and every day, but so many of them go unnoticed. Too often, we lose ourselves in our own little routines, taking so much for granted and failing to realize just how special it is to be alive.
But every now and then, we hear a story or read a fact that simply blows our minds, reminding us of the magic of life and the wonders of the world around us. Here are 45 of those facts that youโll definitely want to share with your friends!
1) The Oldest Tree
Itโs well-known that trees can live for a very long time, but have you ever wondered about the oldest living tree on Earth? Well, that title belongs to Methuselah, a Bristlecone Pine in California. According to the Rocky Mountain Tree-Ring Research Oldlist, itโs currently about 4,850 years old. The tree was named in honor of a Biblical figure of the same name who was said to have lived for more than 900 years.

2) Not A Fan
Thereโs a condition called musical anhedonia, and anyone with this condition simply doesnโt like music. Not just a kind of music, all of it!

3) Zombie Plan
Everyoneโs got a zombie plan, right? Youโve probably joked around with your friends about what youโd do if ever there was an outbreak, like in the movies, but did you know that the US government actually has an official zombie plan?
Called CONPLAN 8888-11, the plan was created during training exercises back in 2009-10, allowing candidates to come up with some interesting strategies and tactics for dealing with undead enemies. Itโs not exactly a super serious plan, but it does contain some very interesting ideas.

4) The Truth About Strawberries
Most people know the โfun factโ that tomatoes are technically fruits, but hereโs another one to blow your friendsโ minds at the next get-together: strawberries arenโt technically berries! Not only that, but bananas actually are a kind of berry.

5) A Little Perspective
We all know that a trillion is a lot higher than a billion, but you probably donโt realize just how much bigger it really is. To put it in perspective, look at it like this: a billion seconds is equivalent to 32 years, but a trillion seconds is equivalent to 32,000 years! A million seconds, meanwhile, is just 12 days, and the average human will live for a 2-3 billion seconds.

6) One Tough Fox
Only a few kinds of animals are resistant enough to live in arctic conditions, and the Arctic Fox is one of them. Experts say that this fox can withstand temperatures as low as -70 Celsius or -94 Fahrenheit.

7) Extraordinary
Oxford University is famed as one of the most successful in the world, and itโs also one of the oldest, with some records suggesting that teaching was taking place as early as 1096. This means that Oxford University is technically much older than the Aztec Empire, which existed from the late 14th century through to the 16th century.

8) A Jaw-Dropping Comparison
Would you believe that there are more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way galaxy? Well, itโs true! There are around three trillion trees on Earth, even though many are being sadly cut down each day, and there are just 250-400 billion stars in the Milky Way.

9) The Truth Is Out There
Do you believe in aliens? Well, thereโs a concept called the Fermi Paradox that suggests we really should have encountered them already! Basically, the theory says that since there are so many relatively safe and habitable planets in our galaxy, itโs highly likely that aliens do exist and probably arenโt that far away.

10) What A Guy
Putting aside his politics and policies, Teddy Roosevelt was one heck of a tough cookie. In 1912, he was shot by a saloon owner named John Schrank and then went on to deliver an 84-minute speech! The manuscript for the speech had actually prevented the bullet from possibly killing Roosevelt, but it did still enter his body, and he started the speech by telling the audience, much to their surprise, that heโd just been shot.

11) Sleepy Time
Dreams are one of lifeโs big mysteries, and experts still arenโt sure what exactly causes dreams or why they happen. However, research has shown that when we dream, a part of a brain is responsible for creating the story of the dream, while another part experiences and responds to the dreamโs events. Itโs like being a storyteller and an audience, all at the same time!

12) Newcastle-Mania
There are over 100 places called Newcastle in the world. Theyโre all part of a community called Newcastles of the World, which even hosts conventions for Newcastle people every couple of years.

13) Bursting The Bubble
Scientists are still baffled by the specifics of sonoluminescence. This occurs when underwater bubbles are burst by loud sounds and actually produce light in the process!

14) What A Difference
We all know the Sahara to be one of the driest and most barren desert landscapes on Earth, but just 6,000 years ago, it was a green, tropical oasis, filled with life! There are a few theories about why this huge chance occurred, with many experts saying that humans were responsible.

15) A Really Big Bang
The volcanic eruption of Krakatoa back in 1883 was one of the biggest and loudest of all time. It was so loud that it was heard as far away as Perth in Australia, 3,000 miles from the volcano itself! Not only that, but those who were closer โ about 40 miles from the eruption โ had their eardrums ruptured by the blast.

16) World War Ant
Ants are locked in the insect equivalent of a World War, and itโs going on all the time, right beneath our feet. Ants are always battling other colonies for dominance, and they can get pretty violent, even eating the bodies of their beaten foes.

17) Thatโs Heavy
A single spoonful of a neutron star would weigh about 10 million tons on Earth. What exactly is a neutron star? Well, theyโre the remnants of stars that have run out of energy and exploded, in simple terms.

18) Old Timers
Back in 2006, the world lost of its oldest beings: a pair of tortoises. One of them, named Harriet, was said to have been collected by Charles Darwin himself while visiting the Galapagos Islands and was later owned by Steve Irwin, the famed Australian TV personality and conservationist, according to NBC.
The other tortoise that died was called Adwaita. She was born before the Declaration of Independence was created, basically making her older than the United States itself!

19) The Quiet Life
You know that voice in your head that you hear when thinking about things or planning out your day? Well, not everyone has it! Yes, there are some individuals out there who have no โinner monologueโ and canโt even imagine the idea of what it would be like. Itโs not necessarily a bad thing though and doesnโt seem to have any negative effects.

20) A Great Fall
What do you think would happen if you jumped off the Empire State Building? It probably wouldnโt be very pretty, right? Well, a 29-year-old lady named Elvita Adams once leaped off the 86th floor of the skyscraper and survived! How? Well, as she jumped off, a strong gust of wind came in the opposite direction and actually blew her back onto the balcony on the 85th floor.

21) War Has Changed
The Bronze Age ran from 3,000 BC to 1,200 BC, and the Iron Age ran from 1,200 BC to 600 BC. Then, in the 1930s, nuclear weapons were invented. This means it technically took us about the same time (or even a bit longer) to switch from using bronze weapons to steel weapons than it did to go from steel weapons to nuclear weapons.

22) Time Warp
The concept of time travel seems like it belongs more in the realm of science-fiction than the real world, but scientists and researchers have studied the possibilities of warping through time for many years.
However, according to leading scientists, traveling through time wouldnโt be enough; since the planet is always moving, travelling back in time could lead us to simply floating around in empty space as the Earth would be in a different location, so if we ever want to master time travel, we need to make a machine that can also travel through space too.

23) What Do You See?
Scientists arenโt really sure whether or not we all see colors the same way. Even examining the mechanics of eyesight and optical nerves can never really lead to any definitive conclusions, as the only way to know if we all see the same thing would be to actually see out of someone elseโs eyes.

24) So Strong
Bones seem to break pretty easily at times, but did you know that, ounce for ounce and pound for pound, bone is actually stronger than steel?

25) Simply Amazing
Cleopatra, the famed female ruler of Ancient Egypt, was born in the year 69 BC. The Pyramids of Giza were built around 2,500 years earlier, between 2,550 and 2,490 BC. So this means that Cleopatraโs lifetime was technically closer to modern-day inventions like iPhones and PlayStations than her homelandโs famous pyramids.

26) Very Big Bacteria
When we think of bacteria, we usually think of these super tiny, invisible organisms that are impossible to see with the naked eye. Thatโs true for most of them, but there is one bacteria thatโs actually big enough for you to look at without a microscope. Itโs called thiomargarita namibiensis and it can measure up at 0.75mm.

27) Being Human
Over half of your so-called human body isnโt even human, according to scientific research. Human cells make up less than half of the total cells in the body, with the rest being microbes like bacteria.

28) Not So Far Away
On average, the International Space Station is about 240 miles above Earth. So, if youโre in Los Angeles, for example, the ISS is technically closer to you than San Francisco, as the distance between these two cities is about 350 miles.

29) Tragic
The V2 rocket, used by the Nazi forces during World War II, technically killed more of the people who helped to make it than its intended targets during the war.

30) Cosmic!
In November of 2000, astronauts from Russia and the US set off to the International Space Station to actually live in space. Since then, the astronauts living on the station have changed, but thereโs always been at least one person up there, according to the BBC, meaning that the human race hasnโt all lived together on Earth for nearly 20 years!

31) The Pepsi Army
Coca Cola vs Pepsi. Itโs always been an interesting battle, but even if you prefer the taste of Coca Cola, it wouldnโt have stood a chance against Pepsiโs army back in the late 1980s. You see, Russian authorities wanted to serve Pepsi in their country but couldnโt afford to pay outright, so they gave the Pepsi company a whole bunch of submarines and other vessels of war, technically giving Pepsi the 6th biggest army in the world at the time. The company sold off the vessels for scrap.

32) Family Tree
John Tyler was the 10th President of the United States. He was born in 1790, and believe it or not, two of his grandchildren are still alive! Lyon Jr. was born in 1924 and Harrison was born in 1928.

33) Blink And Youโll Miss It
This is a pretty scary one, but a phenomenon known as vacuum decay could theoretically wipe out the whole universe in the blink of an eye.

34) Spaced Out
Famed astronomer Carl Sagan came up with the concept of the โCosmic Calendarโ, which is a way to look at the lifetime of the universe in terms of one Earth year. And if we look at this calendar, we can see that humans only came into existence on the equivalent of December 31st! It just goes to show that our existence is an infinitely small part of the universeโs history.

35) A Very Old Queen
Scientists still arenโt sure exactly how long ant queens can live. The oldest one on record was about 30 years old, but since ants are difficult to keep in captivity and there are so many different kinds and colonies out there, itโs totally possible that queens could live much longer.

36) What A Pig
Pigs will eat anything. Even people! Yes, you can technically feed a human body to a pig and it will eat almost everything, even the bones. The only part of us a big wouldnโt eat is our teeth or dentures.

37) Choose Your Words Carefully
Even though Charles Darwin is credited with discovering the theory of evolution, he almost never actually used that word, and it doesnโt appear a single time in his book, On The Origin Of Species. He also didnโt invent the term โsurvival of the fittestโ, which just goes to show how certain words and phrases can be mistakenly associated with people over the years.

38) Mind-Blowing
Hereโs one that will blow your mind. Anne Frank, the famous little Jewish girl who wrote diaries during the Holocaust while she was hiding, was born in the same year as Civil Rights pioneer, Martin Luther King Jr. They were both born in 1929, but because Anne died when she was just a teen and MLK grew up into his thirties, we donโt tend to associate them too closely.

39) Sizing Up
Russia and Pluto are about the same size! The precise measurements for Pluto were a little unclear for a while, leading to some classification changes, but the latest readings show that it has a surface of 17,646,012 square kilometers, which is very similar to Russiaโs 17,125,191 square kilometers

40) Time Is Running Out
Scientists estimate that the Milky Way galaxy only has about 4 billion years left to live. At that point, the galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy, creating a new galaxy called Milkdromeda!

41) The Human Brain
Ever stopped and wondered how the human brain works? Itโs an incredibly complex biological miracle, but basically it all comes down to electrical impulses being sent around from one cell to another, leading to thoughts, feelings, and ideas.

42) Superhero
Some superheroes are able to regenerate and heal super quickly if they get hurt. Well, thereโs a creature called an axolotl that can do the same thing in real life. The axolotl can even regenerate entire limbs!

43) Living Forever
Continuing the theme of incredible animals, thereโs a special kind of jellyfish called the Immortal Jellyfish that basically canโt die. When they get old enough, they actually revert to an infant-like state and start their life cycle all over again.

44) Invisible Particles
All around us, countless teeny tiny particles called neutrinos are zipping by, with billions of them passing through our own bodies every single second! Theyโre so small that thereโs almost a 0% chance of them ever actually touching you.

45) A Massive Colony
Thereโs a termite colony over in the Amazon Rainforest that can actually be seen from space! The colony is said to cover an area about the same size as Great Britain and dates back about 4,000 years.

These facts really make us stop and think about the world around us. Life can seem a little dull at times, but each and every second that passes is a miracle in its own way, and we hope these facts helped you look at things a little differently. Share them around with your friends!
