Everyone loves the idea of finding hidden treasure, but we rarely come across any. However, the problem may not be that there isn’t enough hidden treasure left in the world, but that our idea of what hidden treasure is is way off. Personally, I imagine gold coins, jewels, and maybe a pirate sword or two. But treasure can be anything that you find interesting or important. In this way, there is plenty of hidden treasure to be found by all of us. And one surprising way to come across hidden treasure is by remodeling your home. Just imagine the secrets that are lying within the walls of your home right now! But if you’re not ready to start tearing down your own walls and ripping up the floorboards just yet, don’t worry. You can check out these images in the meantime.
1. Honey, there’s a chain in the wall.
After starting their remodel, this home-owner found an old chain within their walls. The house is from the 1930s so who knows what it was used for. If I owned this house, I’d follow that chain until I found its source. I don’t care how much drywall I’d have to take out, finding answers would be worth it.
2. Old-school light switch.
Here’s a treasure that wasn’t even hidden. It was found the first day after moving in. These old light switches are super cool and work just as well as any modern switch. Sometimes treasure is fixed right there to your wall.
3. Fans By Dre?
Style and fashion can change quickly. But oftentimes, if you wait long enough, that same style that you were into as a kid will come back around and be cool again. This vintage bathroom fan is an odd but perfect example. Its logo was cool-looking back in the 70s and then fell out of style. But once Beats By Dre was created, this logo came right back into the limelight.

4. No toilet needed.
When designing a house, sometimes you need to cut a few corners. Rather than building an extra bathroom in this guest room, the designers decided the just throw a shower in the wall. But hey, at least the room has hardwood floors. Just throw a mat down in front of the door and you’re in buisiness.
5. Bank house.
This house used to be a bank way-back-when. When it was remodeled, the vault was left where it was. Unfortunately, there was no money left inside. But this old safe functions perfectly as basement storage.
6. Secret mural.
What could be better than finding a beautiful work of art behind an old torn-down wall? It’s treasures like these that make all of your hard work worth it. Of course, finishing the remodel is what really makes the work worth it, but getting a little boost half-way through the process can keep you motivated thrugh the end. Well-played anonymous artist, well played.
7. Wallpaper promises.
This dad was convinced that the Spice Girls would never last. I will say, they did make a good run of it and their songs are still played today. However, I wouldn’t exactly call them popular. So dad, you don’t need to eat your overalls. Congratulations.
8. Original electrical switches.
These switches look like something straight out of a Frankenstein movie. They are the original electrical switches to this house and date back to 1909. Peronsally, I’d be hesitant to flip these in fear of getting electricuted. But hey, somebody’s got to do it.
9. Old-school lightswitches #2
I used to work in an old building that had light switches like these. Not only do they look cool, but they are fun to push. I’m not sure why we moved away from the push-button and towards the flip-switch, but I’d be happy to see things go back to the way that they once were.
10. 1920s mail slot.
Some treasures are not only cool, but they are convenient as well. This original mail slot from 1929 sends the mail from the 17th floor all the way down to the basement. I’m sure that at one time the mail was collected there by someone. I’m not so sure if it is now, but it’d be worth the risk just so that you could use this awesome chute.
11. Razor blade disposal slot.
Believe it or not, this slot used to be a pretty common addition to most bathrooms. Unfortunately, looking for the treaure on the other side of this wall may just leave you with a night in the hospital getting stitches and being treated for tetnis. It’s just a bunch of old, rusty razor blades back there, waiting to be found.
12. The love bath.
At first glance, this bath tub looks pretty uncomfortable. But after closer examination, it looks like two people could fit comfortably in this tub, each with their own back rest. This tub is a true treasure. And one that doesn’t require tearing down walls.
13. Modern cave painting.
One of the greatest treasures that you can find is art from long ago. It seems as though the earlier it was painted, the cooler it is. This painting may not be from milenia past, but it still is an awesome sight to see. I wonder what other treasures await behind the walls.
14. Trap door.
This would come as quite a surprise for a new tenant. You would think that the landlord would go through the house and clear out any belongings from previous renters. However, this trapdoor was filled with treasure from other tenants and an entire room to hang out in–if you can stand the creepiness that is.
15. Kitchen well.
Houses are rebuilt and remodeled so many times that it is often hard to know what the original floor plan was. However, in this house it is pretty clear what was built first–the well. But instead of just covering it up, these homeowners decided to incorporate the well as an awesome feature in the kitchen. Let’s just hope that the glass doesn’t break.
16. Spoon handle.
It is easy to look at something and assume that you know what purpose it serves. Take a spoon for example. You take one look and you are sure that it is for eating. Now, you’re not wrong, but you’re not entirely right either. it has many more uses than that. At this house, it has been used as a door handle. And it looks pretty cool to me.
17. History in Times Square.
This wall was uncovered during some construction in Times Square. It seems to be an advertisement for a hotel. At one dollar a night, this may have been the best deal in town. I don’t know about you, but I would definitely splurge for that fifty cent bath upgrade–definately worth the money.
18. Mouse holes.
You know, I’ve always seen half-circle mouse holes in the walls of rooms in cartoon shows. But never once have I seen one in real life. But in this house, they have two. I think they give the floor molding a little character, just as long as the holes remain vacant.
19. Old elevator handle.
It’s funny how something as mundane as a doorknob can be transformed into treasure given enough time. This old elevator handle is a great example. It used to be just another tool to use everyday machines. But now it is a relic of the past, a nod to how far our technological advances have come in the last 100 years.
20. Secret fish.
When you start tearing down wallpaper, you never know what treasures you’ll reveal. This homeowner found some awesome drawings of some underwater creatures under theirs. The question now is, do they keep them or cover them up? I think that they should at least frame the new wallpaper around them.
21. Paint layers.
How many coats of paint do your walls contain? It’s a tough question to answer. But when one homeowner’s wall cracked, it revealed just how many paint jobs this house has received over the years. Like rings on a tree, one could count back in time and imagine all that this house has seen over the years with it’s many different colors.
22. There’s a rock in my room.
Rather than try to keep nature out, why don’t we incorporate nature into our homes more often? Surely, having close-contact with the natural world is a good thing–it’s where we came from after all. This house builder did it right. Why move the rock when you can just build around it?
23. Cork tile message.
When one lucky renovator pulled up their floor titles they found a message from years past. It told of the family that was in this house before them and that they worked on the house together. If I were them, I would have been excited to pull up every other tile to see if there were anymore hidden messages. There’s nothing like a little treasure-note from the past to keep you motivated on your work.
24. Hippie mural.
Of all the things you could find under your floorboards, a hippie mural is up there on the list. The colors, good vibes, and messages of love are enough to brighter anyone’s day. Not only that, but you have a beautiful work of art to keep uncovering as you go. You’re just as excited to pull up the next board as you were the last.
25. Subterranian tunnel.
Finding an underground tunnel would be cool and a bit scary. Walking in the dark to an unknown destination through a tight space would get anyone’s anxiety going. And when you add pictures of freaky little people, your anxiety level would go through the roof. If it were me, I would turn around and stay far far away from that tunnel.
26. Cell door.
Living in a converted police station would be pretty cool. In this house, they left the original cell doors and painted over them. I would love to check out what the inside of the old cells looked like. I’d just make sure that there was someone there on the other side to make sure I didn’t get locked in.
27. Cellar surprise.
Trap doors are cool even if they don’t lead to anything exciting. Just the fact that the are on the ground makes them worth checking out. In this house, the owner was in for a nice surprise. When they followed the stairs down to the old cellar, they found no shortage of treasures inside.
28. Milk door.
This one has got me scratching my head. I cant quite figure out what you would need a milk door for. My only guess is that it functions similar to a mail slot. So back when there were still milk men, they would be able to slide the milk cartoon trough that milk door for your convinience.
29. Well #2.
This well is an incredible feature to the house. I love that they put the lighting down at the bottom so that you can see what’s growing and living down the shaft. It goes 25ft down and connects to a little running stream. I would spend countless hours looking down this hole.
30. Preserved cemetery.
It’s never a good idea to destroy a cemetery. No matter what faith or spirituality you ascribe to, desecrating a burial place just feels wrong. So what did these builders do when they needed to put up a building where this old 1800s cemetery stood? They built around and over it of course!
31. Well #3
This is a great use of a retired well. At a pub in England, they turned this old well into a table. The blue lights add a nice touch. Just don’t drop your beer down the chute!
32. Brick paw.
This may be my favorite surprise so far. First of all, I’m not even sure how you put an imprint into a brick. But somehow this rad pup found a way. I hope the owner of this dog knows that it’s there so that they can come visit this spot when their furry friend eventually passes on.
33. Incredible find.
So far, we’ve seen some pretty impressive artistic treasures hidden beneath wallpaper. But this painting has to be the most impressive. It looks like something that belongs in an art museum but instead is painted on a random bedroom wall. Talk about value added.
34. Walgreens vault.
This Walgreens used to be a bank. But rather than tear down the vault, they just decided to incorporate it into their design. It’s now the vitamin section of the store. And they came up with a pretty snazzy name for it as well.
35. More wallpaper.
Somtimes when you tear down wallpaper, all you find is more wallpaper. This can be a bit frustrating if you are trying to get down to the bare wall. But every once in a while, you get lucky with the wallpaper that’s already there. In this farm house, the owners decided to keep this vintage space scene up rather than tear it down.
36. Another trapdoor.
These trapdoors just keep getting cooler! This not only has a bunch of old artifacts from an earlier time, but it has a really big and open basement space as well. With a little work, you could turn that space into an awesome hangout zone. You’d just need to battle with a few creepy crawlers first.
37. Bathroom treasure.
Now this could be considered your stereotypical treasure. It’s got it all: jewelry, coins, and even a hiding place. Some of the coins are old while some look current. I would be beyond excited to find this!
38. Family game night.
I don’t think that the homeowners saw this one coming. When you tear up your carpet, you sometimes expected hardwood flooring. But never do you expect a full-sized Monopoly game board! Now all they need are some giant game pieces to go with it.
39. Hot-tub livingroom.
Having an indoor hot-tub would be awesome. But what about if it was right there in your living room? You could watch TV while you soak, eat a snack, or just hang out with the rest of the family. I’m not sure why there aren’t more of these.
40. Retro Fanta can.
This can is a cool find for two reasons. For one, it is still perfectly intact without any dings or dents. And two, the design on the can simply looks awesome. If Fanta still made their cans look like that, I’d be buying them way more often.
41. Old newspaper.
Check out the headline on this paper! Can you believe that it survived for this long? It would be an awesome opportunity to get to read about what was happening during WWII from reporters who were writing about it while it was still taking place. Go USA!
42. Vintage poster.
Now this is a true treasure. They just don’t make posters that look like this anymore. I think us men need to bring back these hairstyles. No more shaved sides and well-cropped cuts, we need to let it all hang out.
43. Child letter.
I wish that I had been smart enough to hide a note when I was a kid. It would be great to hear from the people who found it so many decades later. I’m just not sure how they are going to contact this guy. It’s not like he left a cell-phone number to reach him on.
44. Free Mason rings.
This is a cool find. I don’t think you could get rings like these without joining the club. And who knows how many levels you’d have to ascend before they gave you one of these. Finding them sounds way easier than earning them.
45. Honey, there’s honey in the walls.
I wonder how long it took them to realize that the buzzing they’d been hearing was coming from inside of the wall. I’m sure they were shocked when they saw what they were dealing with. Oh, well. Get a bee suit, some smoke, and a bucket for all that delicious honey.
