Seeing two dogs or two wild cats play can do something strange to one’s heart. The comradery we see in animals is quite inspiring. But what happens when two animals of different species become as close as littermates? A whole lotta love! These unlikely animal friends will make you wish you had a friend as good as theirs!
1) Sam and Her Marmoset
What happens when a zoo in Latin America has a set of marmosets that just can’t get along? A young chihuahua named Sam steps in. She took the marmoset on walks every day, enlisting the help of her golden retriever friend when she was too tired.
2)Bubbles and Bella
Size doesn’t matter when it comes to friendships! Bubbles is an elephant who was brought to a safari reserve in the U.S. after she was rescued from ivory poachers in Africa. Bella, the Labrador was left there by a contractor. Ever since, the two have been besties!
3) Suryia and Roscoe
Suryia the Orangutan lives in an endangered species reserve in the U.S. While Roscoe isn’t endangered like his friend, he enjoys spending time with the orangutan he lives with. Suryia’s favorite thing to do is give the dog swimming lessons, even though she’s the one who has to wear a life jacket!

4) Miwa and Uri-Bo
These two friends, Miwa, a Japanese macaque, and Uri-bo, a wild boar, are at Fukuchiyama City Zoo in Japan. A zookeeper introduced them when Miwa was constantly crying. The boar took to the baby and allows it to ride his back everywhere he goes.
5) J’aime and Joey
J’aime came to the Rhino Orphanage in South Africa in March 2017, but she was too small to be with the other rhinos. Thankfully, a got named Joey decided they would be best buds. Now the two hang every single day!
6) Owen and Mzee
In 2003 a baby hippopotamus, Owen, was rescued after a Tsunami hit his home. He was brought to an animal sanctuary in Kenya. Soon enough, he met a sweet tortoise named Mzee who decided that this new hippo wasn’t so bad.
7) Cat and Bearded Dragon
Is it just us or does this look like two bearded dragons, one of them just a hair furrier than the other. No wonder the two are friends, they look just alike!
8) Penny and Roo
Roo was found in a ditch by the side of the road. Missing two legs, he was nearly helpless. Thankfully, Penny, a silkie chicken, decided all he needed was friendship. Now the two (who would have been put down otherwise) share an unbreakable bond.
9) Shere Khan, Baloo, and Leo
Now here is a trio you don’t want to get on the wrong end of. The three of them were rescued from an abusive drug dealer. Now, though traumatized, they spend their time playing together at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in the U.S.
10) Mani and Candy
Remember Babe, the pig who thought he was a dog? It seems this boar has the same idea. The family found the piglet starving in southwest Germany. When he was brought home with them, he instantly bonded with heir young Jack Russell!
11) Kasi and Mtani
Kasi and Mtani grew up together in Busch Gardens in Tampa. They played like littermates for months! Nowadays, Kasi the Cheetah prefers the company of female cheetahs to his friend Mtani. But at least they still spend a little time together!
12) Anna and Her Pups
It’s true that chimpanzees can be aggressive towards other animals. However, where Anna is concerned, that is nothing to be worried about. Anna herself took care of these newborn pups so well that the pups’ mother trusted her!
13) Bea and Wilma
Bea the giraffe and Wilma the ostrich are one of the strangest pairs you’ll see. These ladies live together at Busch Gardens in the U.S. They don’t live close quarters, but rather share a 65-acre enclosure, yet they choose to spend all of their time together.
14) Little Brown and Her Lambs
When the mother sheep was unable to be the mother she should be, New Zealand farmers knew what to do. They took the lambs to their trusty cow Little Brown who instantly fed these new babes!
15) Iguana and Marmoset
Marmosets sure are funny little fellows, and this one is the funniest of all. He hit it off with an iguana he met. Some call the two Godzilla and King Kong.
16) Mabel and Her Pups
Mother hens are known for their maternal instincts. It isn’t because the pups’ biological mother isn’t around. She just prefers to run around outside while Mabel literally puppy “sits” for her. Mabel is definitely winning the godmother title.
17) Rosie and Mahagony
What is it about female dogs that are so maternal? When one llama’s mother wouldn’t take her in, a dog named Rosie did. She had just weened her pups and had enough milk for her new babe Mahogany. To this day, the two go on walks every night just enjoying each other’s’ company.
18) Anzac and Peggy
They may look funny, but they sure are sweet. In 2012, these two sweeties shared a pouch at the Wildlife Kilmore Rescue Centre in Victoria, Australia. In a way, they saved each other’s’ lives by keeping each other warm and feeling safe.
19) Torque and Shrek
Torque the loving doggo adopted Shrek the owl chick when the pup was just six months old. Shrek was removed from his mother’s care due to the fear of the nervous mother eating her child. Ironically, the large dog never caused that fear and the two live happily together in the same house.
20) Rex and His Joey
Rex the pointer mix makes his home in Victoria, Australia. On his daily walk one day, he noticed a dead kangaroo. As if on instinct, he knew something was up and retrieved a baby joey from her pouch. For weeks the two played together until the joey had to go to the Jirrahlinga Koala Wildlife Sanctuary.

Most of the time, it’s the other animal that gets confused. But this time, a certain pup thinks that he is a rabbit. Those that have seen The Other Brother know how this turns out.

This is the prettiest horse that we’ve ever seen. And it seems like a certain feline thought so too. The two find comfort in each other’s touch.

What’s so strange about this one is that this bunny was a simple outdoor bunny. But when the kittens showed up in Melanie Humble’s house, she couldn’t help herself. She hopped on in and started caring for them.
24) Pit Bull and Chicken
This Pit and his chicken are the bestest of friends. Raised from a little chick, this chicken has known no other life. The dog on the other hand is as happy as can be to have a friend like this fowl.

Turns out, families come in all shapes and sizes. This family consists of daddy pit bull, mommy cat, and all of their little chickies.
26) Lisha and Her Hippo
Lisha is the surrogate mother for all animals at the Cango Wildlife Ranch in South Africa. One of her most unusually children was a pygmy hippo who adored her new mother. Over ten years, Lisha raised over 30 babies of varying species.

Turns out wild cats can have friends. Have you ever seen such a beautiful duo? These two are not only gorgeous but have become best buds. They may play rough, but don’t all best friends forever?
28) Milo and Bonedigger
Mama always said that people with names like Bonedigger are no good. But Milo didn’t listen to his mama. He loves hanging with his lion friend. What’s funny is that Milo is the parent here. He has taken care of Bonedigger since the lion was a cub. Now Bonedigger respects him as an authority five years later.
29) Kate and Pippin
This is not a dog you want to take hunting with you. Kate adopted Pippin the deer when the deer was just a young fawn. Although Pippin now spends most of her time raising her own family in the woods, she visits Kate regularly.

This pair can be found at Pennywell Farm Wildlife Center in the U.K. You see, when most animals have their babies and one of them is the runt of the litter, he often gets forgotten. As you may know, dogs are not one of these animals. So when this boxer name Billy saw the poor goat, she took over. She cleans her, feeds her, and cuddles at night.

Let’s just hope that Peanut the skunk never gets scared when she’s around her friend Annabelle, or someone is going home with tears in their eyes. Annabelle loves her friend Peanut and we hope that never changes.

Everyone knows the tale of the skunk and the badger in tales like The Wind and the Willows. Not many will be friends with either the notorious badger or the stinky skunk. Outcasts need to stick together.
33) Tabitha and Susie
When hour-old piglet was found on the side of the road, Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk, Great Britain took her in. But they weren’t the ones to care for her. Their boxer Susie fell in love and the two have been inseparable ever since.

It’s 2006, monsoon season in India, and this mouse has been left for dead in the waters. Oh wait, is that a trusty frog ride I see? This frog had no problem letting his new mouse friend hitch a ride in the water where he himself felt comfortable.

It doesn’t appear that this leopard can do anything wrong in the eyes of this very happy dog. Turns out, this is more common than you think. Retrievers are used to get cats in zoos comfortable all over the world.

Jess the spaniel has always been a surrogate mother to orphaned lambs. She even learned how to feed them with a bottle! She runs around the farm and feeds any lamb that isn’t being fed by their mother.

When an abandoned badger was in need of attention, she was brought to the Secret World Wildlife Rescue Animal Sanctuary. One of the resident’s dogs ended up taking over caretaking duties for the cub and now treats it like her own pup.

Once upon a time there was an owl in North East Falconry Center in Scotland who tired of her many miscarriages. Then one day, she was given a goose egg by a neighbor. This was dangerous, considering owls are known to kill young fowl. But not Gandalf. She took a liking to it and treats it as her own.

Dogs are supposed to chase squirrels, right? According to Susie, there’s no need. This bulldog was a new mother who was already caring for her own pups. So what’s a few squirrels added to the mix?
40) Mama and Her Kittens
When irresponsible foxes get pregnant, there’s only one thing to do. Take the kits to someone who will care for them. Turns out a foxhound (ironically named) named Mama was the perfect match. Mama was known for causing trouble by taking in any strays she could get her hands on.
