In the age of social media, communication is easier than ever before. If we need to talk to somebody on the other side of the world, all we have to do is log on. Still, with that easy communication also comes the ability to be discovered easily as well. Combine that with how easy it is to impulsively share our ill-advised opinions on social media and now you’re looking at a recipe for disaster—at least, it was for these people. With no further ado, here are 40 careless tweets that people really regretted.
1. This first one is way too good not to include.
Although it’s not an official saying, it should be: If you’re online long enough, someone is going to steal at least part of your identity. Whether it’s your Netflix account being hacked or something else, having someone encroach on your personal information is never a fun experience. So why this guy would hand up all of his crucial identifying information up on a silver platter to internet hackers is definitely beyond us… lesson learned, we hope.
2. It doesn’t get much more painful than this…
Sometimes when we’re in the mood to celebrate, we say things that we wouldn’t normally say and we might even be a little bit rude to other people. Although this isn’t advisable, it’s something that happens from time to time—it just usually doesn’t happen in written form for the entire world to see. In this case, someone acted this way directly to their supervisor without realizing it—huge mistake.
3. Well that escalated quickly!
There are plenty of times in life where we want to give other people a piece of our mind. If we’re in our right mind, we generally keep it to ourselves because we don’t want to start any trouble—but being online can easily take away our better impulses. As this exchange shows, going after people for relatively small opinions you disagree with is typically not a good idea… and it might even get you jinxed.
4. There’s bad opinions and then there’s this.
Look, we know that the internet encourages free speech—even unpopular speech—but that doesn’t mean you should always take advantage of it. Some things you can just keep to yourself, half-baked ideas like this one, for example.
5. Not the greatest tribute we’ve ever seen, but hey—it’s the thought that counts, right?
As many people probably know, the late Stephen Hawking was an astrophysicist who revolutionized the world’s understanding of astrophysics and quantum mechanics, overcoming a severe case of Lou Gerhig’s disease to bring the world new knowledge and new ideas. As some other people may know, Kirstie Alley is an actress who has starred in such films as Look Who’s Talking and Look Who’s Talking, Too, both of which feature talking babies. Look, in all fairness, I love those movies and I don’t understand quantum mechanics whatsoever, so who really had the greater impact?
6. So this one isn’t really that funny, it’s just kinda sad.
Look, we don’t wish a positive HIV diagnosis on anyone, but all we’re saying is if we were even in a position where we thought we might’ve been at risk of getting HIV and needed to get tested for it, we probably wouldn’t tweet out the results whether they were positive or negative! The entire world doesn’t need to know your personal medical information. With that said, we hope this woman got this situation rectified with a doctor.
7. You might want to check your math on that one, chief.
Whenever the day, month and year are the same, people online tend to take notice and celebrate because these events are pretty rare. Think about it: how often does the year end in the numbers one through 12? The last time it ended in 12 was 2012, and before that was 1912. To add to that, there’s only 12 months, so the new millennium’s first 12 years had one day like this every year! Needless to say, there’s no 13th month so it’s pretty likely none of us will be alive to see the next 1/1/01… good effort, though.
8. Next time just ask a friend so you’re only embarrassed in front of one person rather than millions.
When you really stop and think about it, when do we ever call our presidents by their first name? Maybe in the case of the Bushes it would be helpful, but for the most that’s not a standard practice. It would’ve paid off for her to think this one through for just one more second.
9. You might be onto something with this one, buddy…
We can honestly understand how someone wouldn’t know this, especially since The Rock changed his professional name to pursue an acting career away from wrestling. Still, what we don’t understand is you’re already on the internet when you send something like this out—why not just google this exact phrase?
10. Maya Angelou and Rosa Parks are both rolling over in their graves.
Maybe this is just an honest mistake but we can’t help but feel like maybe our schools need to do a better job of beefing up on our history education. There’s really not much to say about this, both of these women deserved better and they definitely weren’t getting it here.
11. Does this even make sense…?
Seriously, if you opened a pizza box upside down, wouldn’t the pizza just fall onto the floor? And wouldn’t you then see the spilled toppings on the floor as well? Unless this means he opened his pizza box and was literally looking at the underside of the pizza and… wow, that’s exactly what he means. We’re speechless.
12. Please check where you’re directing your internet rage.
We’ll be the first to admit that sometimes, a little bit of online rage can be privately directed at people who deserve it. Still, if you’re going to complain or yell at someone online, at least make sure you definitely have the right person first.
13. This one is just a little bit too real.
The internet may be good for all kinds of things but it doesn’t always teach us those real world skills. Although libraries are a public resource, they don’t work quite this way… but honestly, we can see this kind of misunderstanding happening more and more in the future.
14. Pro tip: never try to lie to your boss using commonly accessible internet information.
We all run late to work every now and then, and sometimes it’s for a very good reason. On the times when it’s not a good reason, you may be tempted to tell a white lie about why you’re late… but you probably never try to tell one like this. Why wouldn’t you give a story that was unverifiable?
15. You’re taking your reputation into your own hands when you walk in a Great Clips.
16. Why do people love posting their information online so much?
We thought it was common knowledge to protect information like your debit card number with your life. The more we explore the internet, the more we realize just how wrong we really were. Just remember: it does not take a computer a long time to break a three-digit security code.
17. You’ve really gotta appreciate the dedication.
Trying to snap pictures of your favorite celebrities when you’re in a crowd can definitely be a challenge. With that said, we don’t recommend standing in front of a car to get a picture—and we definitely don’t recommend posting that whole experience online, either.
18. I guess a “score” of injured people isn’t quite the same thing.
Though it goes without saying, people in the UK are a little bit more enthusiastic about soccer than we are here in the United States. Still, you have to kind of read the room when somebody says something like this online. The deadpan police response is pretty hilarious, though.
19. It always pays to double check your work, folks.
When you’re in college, you typically have a lot of professors and they change from semester to semester. At times, and particularly at the beginning or middle of the year, it can be hard to remember their names. In those cases, just please don’t use any filler names on any official homework assignments and you should be ok.
20. How about another college-related Twitter fail just for good measure?
Once again, and we can’t stress this enough, do not use any filler phrases or offensive language even as a joke to yourself in your official homework assignments! There’s an easy way to never get in this situation, and it’s by not even doing it in the first place. Also: don’t tweet about it, either.
21. This is an honest mistake but honestly, we didn’t even know the bank would do this!
Customizable debit and credit cards are an option that most banks offer, though often they’re from a set of predesigned images. As it turns out, some banks will let you get your entire face put on your debit card—just know that in some cases it means it’s going to be huge!
22. All else aside, this guy’s Photoshop skills are on point.
We all joke around like this with our friends on group chats, but if you don’t know the number you should probably use a little restraint. On the other hand, anybody who texts someone blindly about a job and gets this response should absolutely want to hire someone who sends this back… so maybe it’s their loss, ultimately.
23. We’ve said it once but we’ll say it again: don’t commit to a number you don’t know!
There are plenty of ways to embarrass yourself in front of your boss, though this has got to be one of the unlikeliest. Still, with the double entendre here and the unknown number, we could see how you might make this mistake. At least the person she texted is her current boss and not a prospective employer, right?
24. And now the whole world did, too!
When you’re just a teenager, you don’t want your parents knowing when you get a piercing or a tattoo. Even though you’re allowed to do what you want to yourself at age 18, you sometimes still need to keep a few secrets. Still, you should definitely think about your piercings the next time you go in for an X-ray scan—and before you post the results on Twitter.
25. The craziest thing about this tweet is that the woman who wrote it was a publicist.
Though it goes without saying, this joke just isn’t very funny or original on top of being casually racist and insensitive. Still, it’s pretty funny that the woman who wrote it is a publicist whose job it was to make other people look good, publicly. We say “was” because this tweet resulted in her losing her job.
26. Good spelling and good grammar are pretty important after all.
Every student loves a good snow day every now and then, and now in the age of social media, we can even ask the school for a snow day directly! Still, it’s probably best to do it politely and with proper spelling if you’re going to do it to avoid getting owned by your school.
27. Honestly, a Google search is all that’s needed to avoid embarrassing mistakes like this one.
Last time we checked, Morgan Freeman is still alive and well actually. Although everybody makes mistakes like this, there’s really no need to make them so publicly when there are simple ways to check them before sharing them with millions. Take heed, people.
28. We’re gonna go ahead and stay away from that one.
Trying to eat more vegetables in your diet is already hard enough without them having disturbing names like this one. If we’re going to pay money for a salad, we’d rather be 100% sure that it isn’t going to give us epilepsy. We’ll just eat at home, thanks.
29. Ok, now wait just one minute…
On the one hand, we don’t want to make fun of anybody for simply not knowing a fact. After all, that doesn’t say much about their personality or how smart they are. Still, we’re confused as to how you couldn’t know who one of the most famous and influential people in the world was as you’re using a device that he designed…
30. It’s never a good situation when you’re getting called out by a corporate brand account.
In life as on the internet, it pays to think through the other side of any situation. If you think that someone else is making the mistake, maybe it’s actually you who are misunderstanding the situation. At the same time, we’re not totally sure that this woman’s comment called for the company she mentioned to fire back at her quite this hard.
31. Support lines clearly can’t help with everything.
We all need a little bit of help in our life. For some of us, it’s just a hand with the yard work or some chores around the house. For others of us, it’s something a little bit deeper… and we probably shouldn’t take to Twitter with some of those issues. For those in the know, this account is actually a joke account pretending to be a lonely dad—needless to say, XBox support walked right into the trap.
32. We’re pretty sure this qualifies you for a restraining order in a lot of places.
Although there are plenty of valid reasons to complain about cell phone service, any time they involve relationships you should probably think twice before tweeting about them. For starters, maybe check with a friend that you’re being well-adjusted before a social media account publicly exposes you.
33. Absolutely, one hundred percent never tweet this at anybody.
When it comes to your bathroom schedule, those details are generally best kept private. Although nobody wants to run out of toilet paper in a time of need, what is the social media person for Virgin Trains really going to be able to do for you?
34. Probably should’ve seen that response coming.
If you’re going to get into a public argument with a major company or institution on Twitter, you’ve got to make sure that your own case is airtight. Secondly, you probably shouldn’t start off being rude—start off kind and let it go that way if it needs to. Needless to say, this guy made every mistake you can make and the company fired back appropriately.
35. Ok, now this was just completely uncalled for!
Every now and then, somebody says something rude on Twitter to a person or a company and they get a response that puts them in their place. Other times, someone makes a simple complaint and the other person comes back ten times harder for no reason! This guy didn’t deserve this, let’s be honest.
36. Ah, pure Twitter gold.
Twitter can be a pretty dark place sometimes. It gives people the opportunity to behave as badly as they want to without consequences—and sometimes there are even positive results from a mean tweet. Still, the best things about Twitter are the absurd, well-intentioned moments that just turn out right. This is just one of those moments.
37. Looks like someone didn’t log out of their other Twitter account…
Take it from someone who works quite a bit on the internet: it can be hard to keep track of all your different personal and professional accounts. In any event, if you run a huge non-profit account like the American Red Cross, you should probably just not tweet anything inappropriate on any of your accounts to avoid situations like this one.
38. Ok, now this is in terrible taste.
For those who don’t know, this tweet is in reference to the Egyptian revolution in 2011, in which Twitter played a fairly significant part. When your entire life is being upended and political tides are shifting, we’re guessing that the last thing anyone in Egypt was thinking about was when Kenneth Cole’s new line was going to drop.
39. Once again, good to keep your personal and professional Twitter accounts very, very separate.
Aside from being generally unprofessional, this is also probably one of the worst things you can tweet if you’re running Chrysler’s Twitter account. After all, their tagline at the time was “Imported from Detroit,” so this whole concept is pretty antithetical to the entire brand they were trying to build.
40. Last but not least, how about this classic meltdown from an intern?
Needless to say, being an intern is a pretty thankless job and one that doesn’t get a lot of respect. At the same time, sometimes interns are given a ton of responsibility—one of those responsibilities being the operation of a company’s social media channels. As these tweets show, you shouldn’t push your interns too hard—they just might snap and publicly call you out on Twitter.
Though it goes without saying, there are plenty of mistakes that you can make on social media if you’re not careful. Of all the websites out there, Twitter seems to produce some of the funniest and most humiliating fails of all of them. If anything, we hope this list can make you laugh while also serving as a lesson to you. If you’re feeling angry or out of sorts, put the phone down and go for a walk outside. You’ll thank us later.
