Nature is amazing in so many ways. The natural state of how things evolve and develop sometimes leaves us stunned. Science is magnificent, as well.
The continued study of humankind in its pursuit for greater discoveries has helped make things easier and better for everyone. But when nature and Science combine, it leads to extraordinary results. Sometimes, they end up as great discoveries that will leave your mind blown.
It’s worth noting, too, that some of the most significant discoveries in Science came as an accident. Penicillin, Velcro, the microwave, vulcanized rubber, radiation, LSD, and even the first sign of the Big Bang – all these came to be by accident.
Here are 40 times when either Science or nature wowed us with its unique processes. Whether it’s natural growth or chemical composition, whether it’s discovered by accident or little home experiments from curious minds, this list will leave you with oooh’s and aaah’s one slide at a time.
1. Light show.
This man thought of swinging around a string of glow sticks with burning steel wool at the end, and while it is hazardous to do so, the effect of it under a long exposure shot is fascinating. It’s like a part of a light show.
2. Cabbage blooms.
Have you ever seen a cabbage bloom? Well, if you leave it in the fridge for too long (like this one), it will bloom and grow. It can grow into more cabbage you can use for cooking, or just display it like this. It looks interesting enough to be an ornament.
3. Frozen waterfall.
If you’re wondering if waterfalls freeze in frigid temperatures, this is your answer. It turns out they do and still look majestic and imposing even in their still state.
4. Nature’s sand sculpture.
We all know water catches on electric charges, but we never know what happens if lightning strikes on wet beach sand – not until now! Somehow, the sky knows how to make some sort of sand sculpture.
5. Just a light snack.
Wonder why this frog is lighting up? That’s because it caught a firefly for a light snack.
6. Chocolate or coconut?
Believe it or not, this is a coconut. Someone took the time to polish it, and now it looks like a chocolate egg, and it looks incredible.
7. How to make your house invisible.
No, this is not an artwork. This is a real house. It may look like parts of it are invisible or floating, thanks to mirrors for this mind-blowing optical illusion.
8. Pumpkinstein.
Here’s a fun experiment for Halloween! Plant a pumpkin in a plastic mold, and it will grow precisely like its mold—no need for extreme carvings. Your spooky decors just got spookier.
9. For your next art project.
If you’re looking for a creative way to represent the color wheel for your (or your child’s) next art project, try putting M&M or other colored candies on a dish of water. The diffused colors create their own barrier into a color wheel.
10. Fogmills.
Wind turbines are a wonder of their own. But if someone up in the air thought of taking a photo of wind turbines spinning during a fog, and it reminds us of the great power it holds.
11. Coffee art.
There’s latte art; then there’s coffee art. Try leaving your coffee on your desk for a few hours and see what your day’s cup artwork is.
12. Reminds me of marshmallows.
Nobody wants this to happen, but when a car wash’s triple foam breaks, it creates this colorful color combination that somehow reminds you of marshmallows or rainbows and unicorns.
13. Hole in one.
Here’s another lightning masterpiece. It hits a flag on a golf course, and since that grass should be well-maintained, that moisture underneath allowed electrical charges to seep through, creating these cracks.
14. Nature’s boat.
Nobody knows how all these plants started to grow on top of a boat. What’s obvious is that this boat was left in the river long enough to look like it mimicked nature around it.
15. Ran into great art.
Street art made of chalk has become a great sensation in many cities. But when you run over them on a hot day, the chalk tends to stick on your tires. Not bad at all since it might turn out as colorful as this.
16. Burning a piece of art.
Who would have thought that using high voltage to carve or burn wood can create this fascinating art? We wouldn’t have until now. It’s like a painting of a tree struck by lightning.
17. Crystal clear.
We all know how water can freeze in frigid temperatures, and this frozen lake looks like it’s made of crystal. If only this is a smoother surface, we can go skate on it.
18. House of ice.
Speaking of getting frozen – this house looks like it’s made of ice. What makes it more interesting is how moisture or precipitation, and strong winds can do when the temperatures are freezing. The house is both fantastic and eerie.
19. Hot and cold.
Warning: doing this experiment can be very dangerous. But one brave person tried to drop a marble in cold water immediately after putting it over a flame. It looks incredible, especially that it didn’t explode. It could’ve hit him in the eye!
20. Dining out in the cold.
This French scientist researching in Antarctica found a creative way to document his daily life: finding out how food looks like when they’re frozen mid-air. His Twitter account is full of them, and you’ll be astonished to see the results.
Je ne sais pas si on verrait une grande différence entre une chips gelée et une chips pas gelée, mais le fromage salé gèle : pic.twitter.com/894RhdzvMo

21. Rippled beet.
Someone left some beet juice out overnight, and it resulted in this skin-crawling revelation.
22. Are you hands clean?
This is disgusting, but can you imagine that this came from the hand of an 8-year-old? So, make sure to teach your kids to wash their hands properly (and often) because we never know how dirty their toys or whatever surface they’re touching is.
23. Court needs a time out.
The water pipes underneath this basketball court burst out, creating waves from inside. This would take a lot of fixing, but maybe they can convert it to a pool instead?
24. Carrot group hug.
When planting carrots, you’re supposed to thin out the seeds so they don’t grow too close to each other. But this is gardening gone wrong. Oh well. Here’s a group hug in times of disaster, just like how these carrots turned out.
25. When lightning hit the road.
Lightning literally hits the asphalt road. And what do you get? It’s like some rock from outer space. We wonder if there’s kryptonite inside it.
26. Like a tiny ecosystem.
Yes, this might be just some moss on a bike seat’s torn-out foam. But look at this happy accident! If we’ll take a closer shot of this one, it’s as if we’re taking a photo of an ecosystem or watershed.
27. Half exposure.
Our mobile phone’s cameras work differently. So, when you take photos from two different cameras, and one of their flashes go off, the result will be this half-and-half exposure. It all depends on their shutter speed.
28. Does this lead to a giant’s lair?
This reminds us of Jack and the Beanstalk. However, this one didn’t grow out of magic beans. This is what happens when you don’t pick the head of your lettuce – it starts to grow upward to this tall plant.
29. Your party will never run out of ice.
Have you ever had a party and you just ran out of ice? Well, this person took some sweet time to let us know what happens when you take out the ice tray from a freezer’s automatic ice maker. It’s like an avalanche of ice ready for a huge house party.
30. Holy smokes!
We don’t advise that you do this because it can be hazardous, and it can destroy your microwave as well. But when boredom struck this person that one time, he thought of putting a highlighter inside the microwave and that smoke is just the bomb.
31. Crystal chandelier.
Nope, this is not a chandelier. Look closer – do you see it? It’s frozen water from a patio table. Marvelous, isn’t it?
32. Perfect reflection.
We know how shadows are formed. But when a shadow casts on an object that reflects light, the result is quite remarkable. This one hits a round trash bin, which resulted in these rings of white and gray.
33. Lazy candlestick.
We all know that wax melts in the heat, so no wonder how this candle left outside turned out like this. It looks like a lazy candle, and it sure is now since you can’t use it anymore.
34. That looks pretty scary.
The next time you ride a turboprop airplane, try to take a photo of its propeller with a rolling shutter, and you’ll get this shot. It looks scary – but scary awesome.
35. A bling on your ride.
It’s never safe to drive out in the cold, especially when the temperature is extreme to the point of freezing any water while your wheels are spinning. It looks cool, though.
36. “Sprouts are sprouting” on your food.
It is not okay to leave your food on the table for four days. Food could rot when left out this long, but this one sprouted. It might as well smell rotten but good thing we can’t smell it, right?
37. Nice catch, Adobe!
When people thought technology makes it easy, but not for creating fake paper bills. Thanks, Adobe Photoshop, for catching this one. This would save a lot of dumb attempts to getting themselves jail time.
38. From gummy to crunchy.
If you don’t like how ‘gummy’ gummy candies are, you can try to freeze them and enjoy munching them with some nice crunch.
39. Laser cat.
Remember all those Science expos we went to during field trips? And do you remember how you enjoyed the plasma balls? Try it with your cat sometimes, and you’ll see them shoot lasers from their paws. We kid, of course, but wouldn’t it be cool to have a cat that has superpowers? *Adds this on Christmas wish list*
40. A wrinkle in time.
We’ve experienced this a lot of times when we’re swimming. But this one’s extreme (and extremely dangerous, too) as he slept in the bath with his hands emerged. He could’ve drowned while sleeping, so getting these wrinkly hands is just a sigh of relief.
