Knitting is the type of hobby that everyone should try at least once in their life. Put a set of knitting needles in the right hands along with a spool of yarn and anything is possible. Seriously, anything. Although, in some cases, that’s not always necessarily a good thing. As we found out doing this article, there is such a thing as a knitting fail.
We’ve gathered 35 of the funniest ones we could find to share with you today. The 35 people who were responsible for these knitting disasters should probably start looking for a new hobby and put down the needles before they hurt someone. After all, just because a project can be done doesn’t mean it should be done.
1. Bunny Suit
Everyone needs a knitted bunny suit in their wardrobe. Right? We’re not sure how appropriate it would be for everyday wear though. It’s more like a once a month sort of outfit.
2. Nightmare Gloves
This knitting creation is closer to something one might see in a nightmare than in real life. At the very least, we hope that they don’t use the freaky gloves to scare children. Even as adults, we could see ourselves being frightened if we saw someone wearing these.
3. Oversized Hat
This is actually a really common knitting problem to have. Trying to plan out sizes of things is pretty hard to do. If you fail, you’ll end up like this person. She accidentally knitted a hat that covers her entire face.
4. Matching Socks
The patterns are cool, and overall, they turned out lovely. There’s just one tiny problem — one sock is bigger than the other. While it’s not a giant fail, it definitely must have been frustrating for the person doing the knitting.
5. Sanitation Issues
Is this knitted bath set really worthy of a magazine cover? All we see is one massive sanitation problem waiting to happen. After about a week of use, all of these knitted bathroom accessories would be basically garbage.
6. Poor Phrasing
There’s only one word to describe this knitting fail — why? There are about a billion other phrases they could have chosen to knit, yet they chose this one, coupled with a magical unicorn flying out of a toilet, of course.
7. Disproportioned
This sock looks like it would fit better on an alien species from outer space than it would a human. It’s the effort that counts though, right? We suppose they could use it as a Christmas stocking.
8. Dropped Stitches
There is nothing worse than missing a few stitches in a project and not realizing it until it’s complete. That’s what happened here. After the item went through the wash, the holes got much larger!
9. Cheeseburger Dress
We can’t believe someone actually thought it was a good idea to knit a cheeseburger dress. It’s pretty much the most impractical dress ever. Although we have to say, it’s definitely creative.
10. Mermaid Life
Here we have another talented crafter putting her skills to good use. She made a knitted mermaid fin. The only issue is if she actually wants to walk around on dry land. Fins aren’t very well suited for that purpose.
11. Accidents Happen
It’s a nice knitted jacket, although, unfortunately, it turned out just a little bit too big… we would say by about 30% or so. The best she can hope for now is that it shrinks some in the wash.
12. Tiny Hat
On the opposite end of the spectrum, how about when a knitted item turns out too small? Case in point, this tiny hat. We think his ears might get a little cold if he ever tries to wear it outside.
13. Wedding Dress
Wedding dresses are supposed to be light and elegant. This knitted one is basically the total opposite. It actually looks more like a moth cocoon than something a bride would wear on her special day.
14. Dissections
This frog and mouse combo looks more like a science project than a knitted one. We suppose, technically, it’s both. Maybe they can be displayed on the wall somewhere in some obscure laboratory or something. That’s about the only place it would ever make sense to have knitted animal dissections.
15. Play Time
The fail here doesn’t necessarily involve the knitting itself, but the fact that they allowed their dog to enter the room. There is no bigger threat to a ball of yarn than a rambunctious pup.
16. Knitted Toilet Paper
This knitting fail is pretty explanatory. We can only imagine what would happen if someone reached for the knitted roll of toilet paper accidentally instead of the real one. It would probably be pretty absorbent, at least.
17. Crochet Shorts
$35 for these beautiful crochet shorts ? It’s a deal that’s too good to pass up. Not only are they extremely stylish, but they’re “really comfortable” too. That’s what the model in the image claims.
18. Hooded Scarf
This aspiring knitter saw the beautiful hooded scarf in the catalog and decided she had to try to make her own. It was a good idea in theory. Ultimately though, hers turned out more like a cave than a hood.
19. Knitted Bikini
It looks amazing in the image. However, there is no way you could ever actually swim with it on. Once it got wet, it would be a total disaster. We can’t imagine it’s very comfortable either.
20. All Gray
This is not the kind of person you would want to run into late at night. They’ve got on a gray knitted hat, a gray knitted sweater, a gray knitted face mask, gray gloves, and maybe even gray pants (we’re not sure). It’s enough to freak anyone out.
21. Monkey Dresses
Not only did they make one ugly monkey dress, but they actually made two of them. We can’t decide which one is worse — the one with the two monkeys on the chest, or the other with literally dozens of them everywhere?
22. Birthday Dog
We’ve all heard of the birthday cat meme before, but how about a birthday dog? Well, here you go. We’re not sure how happy he is about his new hat, but he definitely looks good wearing it.
23. Bacon & Eggs Scarf
While we do love bacon and eggs, we could never wear a scarf like this. It would make us too hungry. One quick glance in the mirror and we would be on our way to the nearest diner.
24. Finger Hat
When he saw another passenger on the plane knitting, he asked them if they could make him something too. The end result? This cute little finger hat. We’re sure it’s exactly what he had in mind when he asked.
25. Knitted Overskirt
Overskirts can be very fashionable if worn in the right context. However, we’re not sure about knitted ones. If we ever saw one of these in the store, we would probably have to pass.
26. Some Lovely Underwear
This would make for a great Valentine’s Day gift for your significant other. It’s simply hilarious, albeit, potentially inappropriate too. Really, it depends on the context.
27. Monster Mask
If scaring children was your goal, this knitted monster mask would be the perfect choice. It looks pretty warm too. Even in the middle of a blizzard, you could still go out and scare people.
28. Simpson’s Outfit
At first glance, it looks like a Doctor Seuss hat. However, it’s actually a knitted representation of Marge Simpsons’ giant blue hair. Where can we find the instructions for this genius project?
29. Cuttlefish
We’re not sure how we feel about this cuttlefish design. It’s kind of a cute idea on the surface, but we would probably be more weirded than anything if someone gave one of these to us. Cephalopods are just a little too unusual looking.
30. High Fashion
We would love to know the name of the designer behind this high fashion outfit. We’re all about looking our best and keeping up with the latest trends, and this outfit, well, it’s right up our alley.
31. Unfinished Dress
It’s still a work in progress, but that’s okay. The undead hands are working day and night to finish it. It’s quite an impressive feat. The hands are so determined to get the dress done that they never sleep.
32. Groovy Pants
How cool is this guy? He has zero shame. He’s proudly showing off his groovy knitted pants without a care in the world. For some people, the disco 70s never ended.
33. Knitting Party
It’s the same story with these people. We would love to attend this party but it looks like we lost our invitation. Oops. We’ll try and catch the next one, we promise.
34. Horror Movies
Normally, knitted dolls are supposed to be fun and friendly. They are, after all, kid’s toys. This individual didn’t get the memo though. They made a knitted version of the movie The Exorcist.
35. Clowns
We wouldn’t want to enter an ugly sweater contest with this guy. He would win hands down. His clown sweater is simply next-level cringeworthy. Judging by his face though, he already knows.
