For most of us, grocery stores are, well, just that: they’re places we go to get our shopping done. But they’re also places where every member of society comes together. That means more often than you think, you might see something really weird.
We’ve all heard of the infamous “People of Walmart” trope. But weird sights can be seen in every kind of store. And it’s not limited to odd people, either. Social media users have spotted everything from wild animals to space alien costumes while shopping for groceries.
Thankfully, we live in the age of smartphones and internet access. As a result, when someone sees something weird at the store, it’s easy for them to document it and share it with the rest of us. How else would we get our fill of goats riding in baby carriers, old couples riding in grocery carts, and a set of twin grandmas in identical outfits?
Sure, these days, anyone can do grocery delivery from an app on their phone. But why would you want to when you can go to the store and see all kinds of weird and wonderful sights? Of course, to do that, you’ll have to put on pants.
1. A man reminding people of how good they have it
The rise of the anti-vaccine movement has seen a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases, but this man wants you to know the reality. He had polio and lost his ability to walk as a result. What’s more, he doesn’t want to see these diseases come back.
Is there anything more adorable than an elderly couple who still knows how to have fun together? They might not be young anymore, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy their time side by side — even if they’re just grocery shopping!
If you saw this sight while at the grocery store, you might wonder if you were dreaming. I don’t know the story behind what’s going on here, but to be honest, I kind of want to.
You can find almost anything at the store these days, including all kinds of ridiculous gadgets that none of us really need. Nana was less than thrilled to find this implement, which for her is kind of threatening.
Most stores these days allow therapy or service animals in as a courtesy to their customers. But somehow, I don’t think that “goat in a baby carrier” falls into one of those categories.
One person was strolling through the aisles of the grocery store when they suddenly saw this guy snoozing in an empty box. He doesn’t look like cheese onion chips, but he does look very comfortable.
IKEA is a weird and wonderful place full of Swedish names we can’t pronounce and affordable furniture we love to ogle. But people have all sorts of adventures there, like this guy, who likes to stage artsy tableaus in the display units.
This man may be a greeter at Walmart, but he decided to do a lot more than just greet people. He wanted to serenade them, too! After all, they say if you have a talent, you should never let it go to waste. Now he’s bringing a smile to everyone’s face.
This person enjoys shopping with their pet hedgehog, but they have no idea if it’s really allowed. But as long as no one stops them, they’re just going to keep doing it. Who wouldn’t want such an adorable shopping companion?
These twin grandmas decked themselves out in matching outfits, which is adorable. But it also invokes some horror movies. Regardless, we love how charming they look.
When one person saw these two people walking through the store, they knew they had to snap a picture. I don’t know if the photo was posed or not, and I can’t decide which option is funnier.
We’ll never know why this person needed to buy 100 bananas, but they took the opportunity to take photo of the cashier’s face. Maybe they were making a huge amount of banana bread or solving a middle school math problem.
13. A businessman has to learn to walk in heels somehow
Sometimes, you see something that’s so strange, you can’t even imagine how it happened. One example might just be this man in a full suit who is also wearing straight-up hooker heels.
When kids get bored in IKEA, they do weird stuff like putting waste baskets on their heads. When bored kids have cool moms, they both put stuff on their heads and pretend to be astronauts.
One person was standing in line at the pharmacy and was horrified to feel someone lick their arm. Who wouldn’t be? Imagine their relief when they turned around and saw this little guy.
I’ve never imagined myself in this situation before. I would never want to be the guy who has to trap a pigeon in a Costco. This poor man definitely doesn’t get paid enough for this.
Most stores employ security guards or door greeters to make sure no one is walking out with merchandise without paying, but they rarely have weapons. This guy, on the other hand, has an actual sword and he looks like he’s not afraid to use it.
If you go to a big store like Costco you’ll see all sorts of interesting people. But you probably won’t see a grown woman eating lunch with a stuffed Pikachu toy. Or will you?
Accidentally spilling something at the grocery store is the worst. This person was trying to be nice, but it’s still kind of a jerk move to leave your mess there, even if you did include a polite apology.
What’s weird about this one? Can’t a woman walk her pet duck on a leash through the grocery store without people staring and taking pictures? I thought we lived in a free country!
I can’t decide on the best part of this picture. Every element of it is so perfect, from the security officer to the dog with his cool sunglasses, hat, and water bottle.
This cat was spotted snoozing in a bodega in the middle of New York City. That can’t be a particularly comfortable spot or position. But you know what they say: sometimes you take a nap and sometimes the nap takes you.
One person was amused and perplexed to run across a Catholic monk as they did their shopping. But the monk was thrilled to come across a cute little puppy and stopped to give him a cuddle.
This kid either clearly has a bright future ahead of him, probably on a site like Reddit. With skills of internet hilarity like these, we may be looking at the next big star of social media.
This was spotted in the seafood department of one grocery store, and it begs some questions. Where did the doll come from, who put it there, and how many employees have touched that fish?
To quote comedian John Mulaney: “Something happened here. You hope it was a miracle, but probably not. It was probably something worse.” I don’t know the story here, and I’m not sure I want to.
Sometimes, things in life just fall together so perfectly that you can’t help but stop and admire them. For example, this cashier who just happens to be named Kashera.
Most soda bottle displays are pretty standard. But this tribute to Super Mario Bros. is basically a work of art. I hope someone got a lot of credit for that creation.
If you’re a fan of “Game of Thrones,” you might just do a double-take at this cashier. The resemblance was strong enough that one customer couldn’t resist stopping to take a photo.
You’ll see a lot of strange things in big cities, such as this woman doing her grocery shopping with a cat around her shoulders. Personally, I’m impressed by how well-behaved the animal is.
This dad was out doing some shopping when he spotted a sign that seemed to describe him. Naturally, he had to stop to take a picture. The dad jokes just never stop, do they?
Babies make a lot of odd expressions as they learn to focus their eyes to see the world. Sometimes, those expressions are unexpectedly hilarious, like this one spotted in a Walmart.
If you end up in a Walmart at 4:00 in the morning, you’re bound to see some weird stuff. If you end up there shortly before a holiday, you might see some cops picking out cards.
