Most people will be quick to fight about male chauvinism and sexism against females. But occasionally, the tables turn. Sexism goes both ways, often with a side of toxic masculinity. Lara Spencer of Good Morning America now knows that better than anyone.
In the middle of August 2019, Good Morning America host Lara Spencer’s reaction to Prince George taking ballet caused millions of jaws to drop. Millions were astonished that someone would be so concerned with a boy, the future King of England, taking ballet classes. “How sexist,” people were saying.

As an apology to the community she hurt, Spencer took time to interview male dancers Robert Fairchild, Travis Wall and Fabrice Camels. To extend that apology further, she even invited the professional ballerinos to dance for a “Good Morning Ballet” class in front of the GMA studios.
“Hey guys,” Fabrice Camels calls out to Instagram for recruits. “Anybody that wants to come and take a ballet class with us tomorrow morning outside of Good Morning America we are going to meet at 6:30 a.m. 44th and Broadway. Bring your tights; bring your shoes; bring your sneakers, anything you want. We are gonna do some plies, some tendus, and have a great time! Bring your friends, let’s dance! Yeah we are going to warm you up, no worries. Yeah, Good Morning America. Tomorrow morning …Bye!”

Travis Wall, one of the dancers interviewed, said that Spencer had contacted him personally to apologize for her comments. “Getting to teach young men and women and getting to share stories was one of the most beautiful mornings I’ve ever had! I love our dance community!!!” he wrote.

“I screwed up, I did,” Spencer said. “The comment I made about dance was insensitive, it was stupid, and I am deeply sorry. I’ve spoken with several members of the dance community over the past few days. I have listened. I have learned about the bravery that it takes for a young boys to pursue a career in dance.”

A few of the 300 dancers shared their journey on Instagram. Aydin Eyikan wrote, “Woah. What an incredible morning. I’m so humbled, lucky, and grateful that I was able to be a part of an event that celebrated such love for the art of dance, and for all the dancers that dedicate so much time and care to this craft. Thank you @traviswall , @robbiefairchild , and @alexdwong for such a memorable and meaningful class this morning outside of @goodmorningamerica . We did that!!!! 🎉❤️”

“The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion it’s possible to achieve,” Nicolas Bustos tells Instagram. The young dancer was TDA JR. 1st runner up, YAGP silver medalist, and UBC gold medalist.

Even the English National Ballet joined in on the fun! “Who said boys don’t do ballet? A look back at the lively encore from the boys of William Forsythe’s Playlist (Track 1, 2) following the final performance last year,” they posted.
