Maps have always been pretty fascinating. It gives users insight into the land they’re about to enter. In the ancient times, they were mostly used for war or trade. But nowadays, they give us info on the most random facts. Which turn out to be pretty useful eventually.
Maps of the United States today won’t have people fighting but it does reveal vast differences between preferences and lifestyles.
Take a look at these 30 maps of the U.S. and see if you learn something new.
1. Land use by state
Now there are a lot of cows in the country, but it is a big country so seeing how much land is dominated by their pastures is eye-opening.
That little patch called “wildfires” is surely less than intentional!
2. The finer details of denim
It’s almost like a competition on who’s got the bluest blue jeans. Perhaps there are reasons for the differences in color.
Florida and Pennsylvania do need to update their denim a bit.
3. What we look like to others
This one is all about fun. We all tend to stereotype people anyway and to be honest, these are pretty accurate.
You can even see these portrayed in Hollywood.
4. Impending climate-related catastrophes
5. The safest states
A lot of crimes go unreported so this one isn’t too accurate.
People wouldn’t have thought New Mexico to be a dangerous place, but most people thought New York was really safe too. Crimes are reported per 100,000 residents, and that’s not surprising seeing as how crowded it is.
6. State capitalism
7. Our immigrant past
It was the 19th and early 20th centuries that saw some of the largest immigrant waves in US history. These were the predominant groups as of 1910 in each state.
This tells us that Swedes and Norwegians weren’t exactly looking for warmer territory.
8. What states have the most of
Okay now this one’s a little odd. If there even was such a survey or study done to bring these to light. Which one is the weirdest though?
9. Kangaroo laws
There are some states who seem to be overly concerned about kangaroos.
Look closely and you’ll see that there are 3 different states where you can theoretically keep a kangaroo without a permit.
10. Electricity bills per state
You’re probably old enough to pay the bills. We all wonder why this basic need is crazy expensive.
Wondering why it’s so expensive in New England? It’s at the very end of a natural gas pipeline, and gas is what fuels power plants. There you go.
11. Tipsy dining choices
Waffle House over Taco Bell doesn’t seem right though.
12. What residents are called
This map should, in theory, help. Putting an “r” or “n” at the end of a state name should do that trick. Well, most of the time it does.
But not if you’re from Wyoming, Wisconsin, or New Hamshire. Indiana went ahead and just decided to confuse everyone.
13. Where the trees are
Trees are super important for air quality and many other things. They look pretty too.
Though keeping trees upright is a huge challenge in Tornado Alley. Who gets paid to take care of them?
14. The most Kevin of Kevins
15. The Waffle House index
That’s a lot of branches. Which means a lot of people are happy. Have you been to a Waffle House?
Who knew they made their way so far up north? Sounds good on a cold day.
16. Scandi style
17. Who controls the air
18. Where the cars are the fastest
If you like to drive fast then head to the middle of Texas. Hope you have enough gas money though.
It’s just too bad Hawaii is so far away for a lovely Sunday drive.
19. Most memorable states
20. Who can dream of a white Christmas
Well, seems like anyone can get a white Christmas these days thanks to technology and travel.
But you should plan a trip to the mountains if you want to see the real thing on December 25th.
21. How to hide in each state
If you’re hoping to hide out in nature and not be noticed then here’s what color camo to buy based on where you live.
Apparetly, a New Yorker in camo wouldn’t blend in out West. It does make sense though.
22. States’ biggest earthquakes
Even though you live far from a fault line, there’s still a risk of a natural disaster to hit your state. It’s always better to be aware and prepared.
23. Favorite foods
Now this one is fascinating. The “pizza zone” is pretty huge but where do you see yourself?
24. Biggest Twitter haters
Serious regional rivalries happen when it comes to hating sports teams. Die hard fans go all out too.
Who hates the Bills though? It’s not like they ever beat you in a Superbowl.
25. How long we’ll live
26. Where we work
The most common jobs in nearly every state force us to deal with people all day long. No wonder so many people are angry and end up drinking at the end of the day.
Do remind us to say please and thank you, and to keep our heads down in Utah and Arizona.
27. The cost of living
If you want to live in a state where the life expectancy is longer, it’ll cost you so don’t say you weren’t warned.
There’s so much variation by city though. But hey if you think this map is helpful.
28. Student debt by state
29. Citizenship knowledge
If you find yourself in need of a civics lesson, go ask someone who had to go through the citizenship process in the US. That’s different from general immigration by the way.
It seems that more than half of Americans can’t pass a civics test. Well except if you live in Vermont, for some reason.
30. Family size
Hawaii is near the top of the list which is a big surprise. Though we did expect Utah. Where did you think the largest families live though?
