Finding a creative hobby to keep us busy has become all the more important with the Coronavirus lockdown preventing us from leaving our homes. Creativity comes in many different forms, and for some people, it meant combining their love for fashion with their desire to create something new.
Yep, we might already have an abundance of footware options available to us, but they’re not always quite right. Perhaps you’ve got your eye on a certain pair of stiletto heels that are just too expensive to justify, or you’ve bought a pair of boots that are too boring for your personal tastes.
Whatever the challenge, these people were up for it! Get ready to be blown away by some of the incredible creations that have been shared on the internet.
Pumps are cheap and cheerful, and this person bought their pair for $6. They then bought some bleach and paint and unleashed their creativity! The finished look has the appearance of a colorful space scene.
These white shoes were bought cheap off AliExpress. The creative person behind their upgrade also bought a couple of glue-on appliques, with a clear vision in mind of what they were looking for. The finished result cost less than $20 in total, yet they look like they cost at least $50.
You won’t have ever seen a pair of boots like this! They’ve got a thick sole that’s quite literally filled with rocks. There are even mini battery candles in there – the creator behind this design wired them together and put a single battery pack in the back so they can add batteries when they’re wearing the shoes.
We all have a pair of old boots in the closet that we only really wear when we’re heading out on a muddy work. This person wanted to get more use out of their shoes, so they transformed them using their comics. Yes, they might not hold up for long, but the owner had a whole lot of fun making them!
Now this is why you don’t buy expensive shoes, especially if you have a pet! This person’s dog ate his girlfriend’s shoes that cost $500. The girlfriend was so upset that she cried after making the horrific discovery. So her boyfriend tried fixing them, and we think he did a pretty good job!
Calling all gamers! This person’s wife, who’s an avid gamer herself, made a pair of keyboard shoes for a ’zero waste’ school project. She only used ruined keyboard keys and cables for the project. You wouldn’t think this would work, but it really does!
7. Glow in the dark shoes
When you make your own shoes, you can do exactly what you want – including making them glow in the dark! This person’s shoes have white spaceships that glow green in the dark. Yup, you can actually buy glow-in-the-dark fabric nowadays.
8. Rick and Morty sneakers
TV merch tends to be quite expensive, and this person figured out a way to showcase their husband’s love for Rick and Morty without spending an arm and a leg. They hand-painted the shoes, which is a pretty incredible feat! Especially as it was their first try painting shoes.
Nude shoes serve their purpose, but nothing says class like a pair of glittery heels. This person bought a pair of plain shoes for $25, added some glitter, and made them shine. They look like they cost at least $100.
It’s not easy to find a pair of stiletto heels that are tailored to Marvel fans. This Marvel lover couldn’t find anything that suited what she was looking for, so she made her own awesome Marvel heels. You could sell these in a store!
There’s nothing like the internet when you’re looking for a source of inspiration! This person was so inspired by other appliqued shoes that they tried it out for themselves. Their blue pumps look much prettier with silver sparkles on the heels.
If you’ve ever tried embroidery, you’ll know it’s a skill that takes a whole lot of practice and patience – it certainly isn’t for everyone! This person, a self-proclaimed lover of all things embroidery, has created an embroidered masterpiece on their Converse sneakers. They’re totally unique from anything else that’s out there.
13. First-time embroidery
For a first attempt at embroidery, this person did an amazing job! They admitted that the skill is “quite challenging, but also so much fun to work on.” They plan to sell this pair of sneakers and buy themselves a sewing machine. You could easily start an embroidery business with skills like these.
Weddings are outrageously expensive, and cutting costs in any way you can is always a wise idea. This person made their own wedding shoes rather than shelling out hundreds of dollars on a pair from the store. She “spent too many hours gluing individual crystals onto a pair of $40 pumps” – but was quick to say that it was worth it!
Here’s a completely different take on wedding shoes! They’ve been decorated with polymer clay figurines. The close-up photo shows exactly how much detail has been put into these. They’re so cute, too!
If this person’s shoes aren’t enough to encourage you to try embroidery, nothing will! They took a pair of velvet pumps and embroidered a pretty gold pattern onto them. Now that’s how you make luxury out of the little things.
Now this is the mark of a good friend! This person made their Anime-obsessed friend a pair of custom pumps for their birthday, and they’re just incredible. From the tie-dye colors to the hand-drawn characters, everything about these shoes is top-quality.
18. Paint-splattered pumps
Remember when paint-splattered shoes were all the trend? Crazy how we spend so much money on them when we could have just done it ourselves. That’s exactly what this person did – and all the better for it, because they got to choose their favorite colors for the design.
Who wants to wear a pair of boring black shoes for their graduation? This person showcased their personality with their homemade graduation heels. She probably stole the show with those colorful heels! We’re seeing a trend with comic print designs here.
Have you ever seen anything more adorable? This person’s my mother-in-law loves to knit, but they live in a warmer climate, so sweaters aren’t something anyone can really make use of. She’s had to get more creative with her knitting ideas, and these knitted sneakers are too cute for words.
21. First custom pair of shoes
Can you believe this is the first pair of shoes this person made? They’re clearly an incredible artist, and they’ve found a way to showcase their talents on their sneakers. They’ve since set up their own Instagram account to share their designs.
These shoes started off plain white, and their owner decided they needed an upgrade. They have much cooler vibes now they’re black with a red stripe. For another first-time customization, this definitely isn’t a bad try!
23. Straightforward design
Customizing shoes doesn’t have to mean spending hours designing, drawing and embroidering! This person simply used a black pen to draw along the seams of their Nikes. They’re so much bolder now.
Now that’s a lot of time spent waiting! This person has been writing poetry since they were 11, and have dozens of journals full. The text featured on these pumps is some of their favorite pieces. They wanted to make their pumps more personal, and they certainly managed to do that.
If you’re not got at achieving your creative goals, set yourself a time limit. This person wanted a pair of pretty shoes to wear on their Florida vacation, and their embroidered designs are perfect for the sunny state. They’ll be wearing invisible socks with these to prevent the stitching from being irritating.
26. Crystal-embellished shoes
It took this person a very long time to embellish their navy shoes with Swarovski crystals, but the end result made the hard work more than worth it! They admitted that they kept taking long, unmotivated breaks…but if they did it in one sitting, they were certain they could have gotten one shoe done in an hour.
Addidas shoes don’t tend to look pretty, but this person blinged up their Superstars with a subtle sprinkling of rhinestones on their shoes. They deliberately bought a pair with white metallic striping because they knew it’d blend well with the rhinestones. They decided to add rhinestones to the heel after this, too.
28. $5,000 prom shoes for $40
This girl wins the award for best sister ever! They look just like a pair of Louboutins, with their red underside and chunky sole. She initially bought the shoes on sale at MJM Designer Shoes, then added the diamonds and the red underside herself.
29. Embroidered Zelda shoes
Check out these cool embroidered pumps! The creator behind this design admitted that it was definitely challenging, and took about three days of somewhat-dedicated work. They made them as a gift for a friend who’s obsessed with all things Zelda, and her reaction was “worth the pricks and sore fingers!”
Finally, here’s another person with artistic talent who showcased her skills on a pair of white sneakers. She wrote that she chose the birds to remind her to always be safe, and to remember her spiritual home. She also said they were a “pretty simple” design – not for the average person, they aren’t!
