Considering there are thousands upon thousands of different types of jobs, there’s no way for someone to know what goes on with most of them. Even so, a lot of people think they have a good idea but they’re way off base. As you’re about to discover from these 30 honest people, what happens at work isn’t usually what you’d expect.
1. What…no free shipping?
Although some people already know this, a lot don’t. That’s right, you’re not getting free shipping at all. So, that great offer you find online might not be so great after all. What a bummer.
2. That’s scary
This is enough to make you think twice about driving on a highway. Did you know that 9 out of 10 truckers have a smartphone on the windshield of their big rig so they can watch television? It’s true.
3. Hidden passageways
This is kind of cool. Large amusement parks like Magic Kingdom, the Epcot Center, and Disney World have hidden tunnels that run underground. That way, employees can get from one location to another while avoiding the crowd of visitors at the park.
4. Super searchers
Most people call a help desk or take a broken electronic device to a repair shop. But that might not be the best option. Most IT techs aren’t gurus at fixing things…just really good at googling. So, you might want to do research before having a device repaired.
5. A great secret
This is quite sweet. It’s hard enough for parents to leave their kids in the care of others. But to miss out on “firsts” makes it more difficult.
6. Kind of gross
You know that white-colored wheat flour you buy because it’s healthier than the alternative? Well, come to find out, the only reason it’s light in color is because factories use chlorine to make it look more appealing. This process also makes people more sensitive to gluten.
7. Always on call
Just like police, paramedics, and firefighters, people who work as lifeguards carry their radio with them wherever they go. If they’re on personal time but hear someone in distress, they head to the location. That’s nice to know.
8. It’s all the same
Just because you spend more money on premium cooking oil doesn’t mean you’re getting higher quality. You see, an individual who works for a factory explained that the same olive oil ends up as multiple brands. Simply put…imported oil might be the same as a generic product.
9. Please, don’t touch
It’s common practice for museums to keep untouchable items behind glass. But now you know why it appears staff members are always following visitors around. More than likely, they want to avoid cleaning as much as possible.
10. Stop peeking
Here’s a good piece of advice. Before you take your computer to a shop for repair, be sure to lock or delete anything you consider confidential or embarrassing. The reason is that IT techs often snoop.
11. The danger of candles
Ah…the fragrant smell permeating from candles. Unfortunately, those made from paraffin, even 100 percent paraffin, are dangerous. They contain chemicals like toluene, acetone, and benzene, the same carcinogens in the emissions of diesel fuel.
12. Vegan wine?
A lot of vegans and vegetarians enjoy a glass of wine. But here’s some bad news…it’s neither. Winemakers use egg whites and in some instances fish parts during the refining process. Sorry to disappoint the vegans out there.
13. A little too pushy
Oh, so sneaky. But this explains why at wedding receptions held at hotels, bar staff often pushes drinks perhaps a little too hard. The quicker the tab’s spent the more money the establishment can ask for.
14. What a rip-off
That large bag of buttery popcorn you buy when seeing a movie is hard to beat…even at $6 a pop. Sadly, it only costs $0.06 to produce that same bag…popcorn, butter, container, and power. While it won’t be as good, the next time you visit a theater, you might think about taking popcorn from home.
15. Demand better
There’s no reason to accept the increasing price of various services…yet most people do because fighting it is a hassle. But by contacting your internet provider, insurance carrier, phone company, and so on, you could get a lower price. All you have to do in most cases is ask.
16. No fee for parking
Here’s another way to save money. The next time you go out of town, rather than pay high dollar for airport parking, take your vehicle to the mechanic shop. If you’re in good standing with a mechanic, they’ll have no problem letting you park on their property free.
17. Attention vegans
If you’re a vegan who enjoys dining out, you’ll want to know about this. With this information, you can be more selective about where you eat and the time you go. And never be afraid to ask.
18. Dirty drugs
While this should never happen, it does. An individual who’s worked at several different prescription drug manufacturing companies stated that if pills fall on the floor, workers simply pick them up and put them back into the bottle. That means your medication could be dirty.
19. Surprising returns
Librarians commonly find the strangest things used as bookmarks. That includes old bills, ticket stubs, and even toilet paper. It seems as though people have no pride.
20. Hyper focused healthcare
Doctors spend a vast amount of time staying up-to-date on healthcare practices and medicine. The amount of time is so great that their skills in other things are almost nonexistent. We suppose that’s a good thing.
21. Lending support
No one ever wants to have a cat or dog euthanized. But sometimes, that’s the only option. Although it’s hard to see a beloved animal put down, vets encourage people to stay since it makes the pet feel more comfortable and at peace.
22. Better service
Being respectful and nice to a bartender will go a long way. Not only will you get stiffer drinks but also faster service. Instead of demanding a cocktail or beer, be kind and patient.
23. The cover-up
If your couch is showing signs of wear and tear but the frame is still in good condition, you can have it reupholstered. But some professionals take shortcuts. They simply cover the old fabric with new and use weird material as filling.
24. Fake online reviews
Many people buy products or visit businesses based on others people’s feedback. But perhaps they shouldn’t. While not every company does this, a lot do…they hire individuals to write positive reviews.
25. Filthy movie theaters
Like it or not, movie theaters are extremely filthy. Between the rodents and bugs that feed off food that’s dropped on the floor and whatever guests bring in, it’s nasty. But that’s part of the moviegoing experience.
26. Get it in writing
Unfortunately, most hospitals overcharge patients. So, always ask for an itemized bill. By doing so, you’re likely to get better prices.
27. Lost baggage
This is certainly unsettling. It seems when someone loses luggage at the airport, no one is actively searching for it. Instead, information goes into a database and when the item shows up somewhere, airport workers know to grab it so it can be returned to its rightful owner.
28. Staying cool…or warm
Some hotels have bogus thermostats in guests’ rooms. That makes visitors feel as though they have some degree of control, which leads to fewer complaints. In reality, the thermostat is preset to a reasonably comfortable temperature.
29. Hidden treasures
Unless someone shared this, you’d never know. But if you were to tear down walls in your home, there’s a good chance of finding all kinds of “treasures.” And by that, we mean cigarette butts, soda cans, beer bottles, and more left behind by the construction crew.
30. Faking it
It’s not uncommon for someone in the plumbing industry to snake a clogged drain for 10 to 15 minutes even if they could unclog a small amount of debris by hand. Most plumbers charge by the hour. By doing this, homeowners feel as though they got their money’s worth.
