There are a lot of reasons to love our elders. From their stories to their civic duties in war to all of the challenges they’ve experienced, they’ve all definitely helped us get to where we are now. Beyond that, though, they’re also incredibly fun and carefree! When you get to a certain age, however, you’re allowed to let your true personality shine more than ever before—and these photos are perfect evidence of that. Keeping that in mind, here are 40 hilarious examples of why you have to love your grandparents.
1. No matter what age you are, dogs are always man’s best friend.
As you get older, a big risk you run is having too few friends or family around and getting lonely or isolated. To fight back against that, many older people get pets to keep them company—and this man is certainly no exception! This picture was originally posted on Twitter by user @JessAmante4 and got incredible feedback (as you can see from the screenshot). Just look at his face: have you ever seen somebody look so happy?
2. Sometimes people get a little wackier as they settle into old age.
Do you remember how adventurous and free you were when you were younger? As children, many of us would run around the yard without a care in the world, acting as crazily as we wanted to. We got another taste of that in college, where making questionable decisions was a point of pride. In adulthood, we mostly calm down and follow the rules. Fortunately, as this picture shows, we get another chance to be wild again when we get older—who wouldn’t want to do this?
3. Once you’re old enough, you can really throw caution to the wind.
It’s important when you’re young to plan for the future, take care of your body and make sure you’re making responsible decisions. Still, getting old enough means that you’ve already done most of what life has to offer… and you can start to do a little bit more of what you want. As you can tell from this picture below, you start to get a sense of humor about life, death and staying healthy when you’re 100 years old!
4. Poking fun at your life partner also never gets old.
Let’s face it: having a good sense of humor is pretty important to longevity and to having a positive outlook on life. If you have a husband or a wife, you probably know just how silly the two of you can get when you’re on your own. As it turns out, that sense of humor never goes away—just check out this picture below for proof! How long do you think it took her to realize what was going on?
5. Like we said: having a partner in crime makes everything a little bit easier.
We’ve all seen those novelty t-shirts that require two people wearing them to make a complete joke. Although a lot of them are rude and crude, some of them are simply functional. Take the picture below, for example. You never want to lose your best friend in a crowd, after all. This is the kind of resourcefulness you learn in your old age!
6. You’re never too old to stop feeling young!
Just because we get old doesn’t mean we lose our eye for when the young cuties are around. Although it’s hard to show interest or make ourselves available when we’re young and shy, getting old gives us a whole new confidence. The confidence, let’s say, to throw yourself into the arms of a younger man! You go, grandma!
7. Like we said: feeling young is one of the most important things in life!
While many of us are immature and overly emotional in our youth, sometimes old age gives us wisdom, patience and a kind of elderly respectability. Then again… sometimes it doesn’t! If you were competitive when you were young, you’ll probably still be competitive when you’re older. Take this picture as proof!
8. Sometimes you get the new confidence to do a little gender-bending as well!
Men spend so much time proving to themselves and to other men just how manly and strong they are. Its things like drinking beer, watching football, never crying and all that other masculine stuff that starts to take a toll over the years. Why can’t we all just loosen up a little bit? As it turns out, this grandpa has no problem at all rocking a flower on his head when he’s hanging out with his granddaughters—and we definitely approve.
9. Having a strong back is important for more reasons than one!
If we don’t stay in good shape, our backs are one of the first things to go as we get older. For those that don’t know, having back problems can easily lead to all kinds of other problems as well. Though it can def lead to bad posture and other muscle aches, it can also lead to the inability to give your grandkids piggyback rides! Fortunately, the gentleman in this picture has none of those problems.
10. Going on adventures with your loved ones never gets old.
Though keeping your relationship exciting and alive is a challenge for anyone of any age, we can always take inspiration from those that are significantly older than we are. As this picture shows perfectly, our sense of romance and adventure never has to get old—no matter how old we ourselves get.
11. There’s also no age where it’s not fun to cheese it up for pictures!
We don’t all like getting our picture taken. Still, those of us who do get the pleasure of hamming it up whenever someone pulls out a camera. In the case of the couple below, we’ve never seen anybody that takes so well to being photographed—and you can tell just how much fun they’re having while doing it!
12. It’s never too late to cross something off of your bucket list.
What kinds of things do you have on your bucket list? For some of us, it’s traveling. For others, it’s trying new kinds of foods and experiences. One of the scariest and most exciting is the experience of skydiving, an experience only for the most adventurous among us. Still, that spirit of adventure never gets weaker as one gets older. In some cases, like the one below, it may get even stronger!
13. Speaking of bucket lists, would you give this a try?
Like we said before, being brave and seeking out new experiences is an important part of staying young in spirit. Even if you’re not necessarily up for skydiving, there are other adventures to be had in the same vein. As this picture shows, even if you’ve never been ziplining before in your life, you’re never too old to try it out for the first time. Bombs away!
14. And you might not want to get on grandma’s bad side…
As you get older, you learn your own boundaries better and you stop taking any guff from anyone. If someone steps to you, you’re ready to defend yourself by any means necessary. Just ask this gun-toting grandma. Even though she’s using a walker, she’s also packing heat and she knows how to use it. Maybe now you’ll answer her calls!
15. Ever wanted to take up deadlifting?
Exercise is important to staying in shape and having a long life. No matter how intimidating it can be to get into heavy lifting, our bodies will definitely thank us for our commitment to a workout regimen. Though there’s plenty of fitspo on Instagram and all over the internet, we can’t think of anything better than this woman’s workout regime. Just look at that form!
16. Nobody is more crafty or generous than your grandmother.
As you get older, you have a lot more time to do crafts and come up with creative ways to solve problems. In the same vein, you also have more time to think of interesting and unique ways to embarrass your grandchildren. If you can do both at once, that’s a home run—and that’s definitely what happened to the unlucky grandson in this photo. Sure, this device will definitely keep your nose warm… but at what cost?
17. No matter how wise they are, sometimes they need our help when it comes to technology.
We’ve all likely experienced the learning curve that comes with a new piece of technology. Switching from Apple to Android, for example, is full of unique difficulties. Still, when it comes to a problem like, say, making sure your cell phone displays the right time, many of us can probably handle that issue. Though many of our grandparents are still learning and keeping themselves young well into old age, not all of them can solve problems like these (as this picture so elegantly shows).
18. They can stand up next to any superhero.
When you’ve experienced as much life as the average elderly person has, you don’t have to apologize to anyone. You’ve gathered enough strength and wisdom to be a role model to your own family and to your community. In many ways, you become a small-scale superhero, someone tasked with showing the younger generation the way. To make this comparison all the more literal, consider this man posing with Spiderman. I don’t know about you, but I know who I would want in my corner.
19. Even if they’re old-fashioned, they know how to take care of their things.
Although we tend to take our things for granted as more and more new technology comes out, elderly people are used to having things progress at a slower rate. Because of that, they may be more likely to take care of each and every one of their things… no matter how uncool it may look. In the case of this cell phone, using the box that it comes in as a phone case isn’t the smoothest thing we’ve ever seen. Still, it’s the thought that counts, right?
20. Even if they’re not good with technology, they still have great manners.
Look, we get it. Getting older as the world changes around you is a tough challenge for anyone. Google didn’t exist until relatively recently and it takes some time to get used to. Still, one thing that never changes is the need to be kind and polite to other people—and sometimes to other things, depending on what the case may be. As this man’s search history shows, convenience of technology will never replace his sense of respect for others!
21. But sometimes being a little grouchy can work out in your favor…
No matter how kind and respectful we are, we can’t all be nice all the time. In some situations, being nice is actually a disadvantage. Let’s say, for example. that you were kidnapped by someone and you were going along with all their instructions and making things too easy for them. They would probably keep you for a long time and get their way, right? Fortunately, one grandma knew how to handle that situation perfectly. We’re going to try this technique ourselves the next time we get taken somewhere that we don’t want to go!
22. Like we said: sometimes attitude is well-justified.
As youth culture goes off into weirder and weirder directions, it’s understandable that our grandparents might not keep up with it. Values change and people don’t always change along with them. Though it’s great to keep an open mind, sometimes it’s better to stick to what you know—and to speak out against what you don’t. In the case of this older woman, it’s pretty obvious to see what she stands for!
23. As it turns out, wearing a loud shirt is a good way to communicate with other people!
Entering yourself into any kind of long run is a big accomplishment, no matter what your age is. Aside from the athleticism of it, there’s also the element of self-consciousness that comes when we don’t love something about ourselves or how we look. In those cases, it’s best to find the confidence to continue in any way that you can—even if it means being a little bit confrontational. For anyone who needs tips on how to do this, just check this guy out!
24. No matter how old you get, you have to find a way to do the things that you love.
Although you might have a little bit more trouble moving around and being active than you used to, being old doesn’t mean you have to stop being engaged with life. If you keep a positive attitude, even the hardest activities can suddenly become easy again. For example: we bet you didn’t think you could take up fencing if you and your opponent were both using a walker. As this picture shows, nothing could be further from the truth. En garde!
25. Sometimes greeting cards are just a little bit too accurate…
There are a lot of stereotypes about old folks. Some people say that they’re out of touch, others say that they’re grumpy and others say that they don’t have the best fashion sense. Let’s be clear: much of the time, those stereotypes simply aren’t true. On the other hand, sometimes they hit a little too close to home… and the only thing to do about it is to have a sense of humor. Just take a look at the picture to see what we mean!
26. And who said that grandparents couldn’t stay up-to-date with the culture?
Staying young and relevant can be a challenge for anybody, no matter what age. Usually, we think that our grandparents have no hope of staying current with us. If you want proof that you’re completely wrong, check out this grandma spinning the wheels of steel. As if her DJ skills weren’t good enough, look at her outfit! We don’t want to ever hear again that grandparents can’t be just as cool as we are.
27. Like we said before, a sense of humor is very important.
When we’re young, we put a lot of importance on defining ourselves and presenting ourselves as cool to the rest of the world. We care about what we look like and what other people think of us. When we get older, we’re comfortable with who we are and we don’t feel the need to impress anyone else. We might also feel the need to make fun of other people who do care about those things. But hey, we all have to learn somehow, right?
28. No matter how old we get, we’re really not all that different than we ever were.
When you really stop to think about it, are you really all that different from your grandparents? People tend to be a lot more alike than they like to think. We all like new experiences, good food and life’s simple pleasures. With the rise of the internet, one of life’s most obvious pleasures is cat pictures. As it turns out, our grandparents have been hip to that trend for a long, long time.
29. We’re not even sure where you’d buy something like this…
Though we all crave new experiences, those get harder and harder to come by as we get older. After all, there are only so many things you can do on Earth, and by the time we reach 70 or 80 years old, we’ve probably done most of them. Still, one thing most of us have never done is worn a giant knitted rainbow sweater big enough to hold us and our girlfriend. As this couple shows perfectly, it’s never too late to start!
30. We’re not even sure what’s happening here.
The simple truth of it is: as we get older, life gets weirder. No matter how much we think we know about the world or ourselves, the world always brings us something new with each passing day. Sometimes it’s a new person, sometimes it’s a new experience and sometimes it’s a new idea. And sometimes it’s… a baby monkey? We’ll be honest, we’re not even sure what’s going on in this photo. What’s clear is that this woman is having a great time, and for that, we salute her.
As this list shows, there’s a lot to love about our elders and grandparents. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are now. Aside from that, there’s plenty to learn about how to live life by how they carry themselves in their old age. Some of them do it with quiet dignity, others do it with reckless abandon. Regardless, we owe them a lot. Hopefully, this article has encouraged you to appreciate your own grandparents just a little bit more—and maybe even to pick up the phone and go on an adventure with them!
